On January 1, 1873, Ventura County was officially split from Santa Barbara County, bringing a flurry of change. That same year, a courthouse and wharf were built in San Buenaventura. A bank was opened and the first public library was created. The school system grew, with the first high school opening in 1890.
Other towns were starting in the county. A plan for Port Hueneme was recorded in 1874, and Santa Paula's plan was recorded in 1875. The community of Nordhoff (later 1917 renamed Ojai) was started in 1874. Piru, Fillmore and Montalvo were established in 1887. Simi (later Simi Valley), Somis, Saticoy and Moorpark were established in 1892. Oxnard was later established in 1898.  Ojai, Calif. (pronounced "OH-high") When the town was laid out in 1874, it was named Nordhoff, California, for the writer Charles Nordhoff. (1830-1901) Leading up to and during World War I, American sentiment became increasingly anti-German. Across the United States, German and German-sounding place names were changed. As part of this trend, Nordhoff was renamed Ojai in 1917.

Sacots-lnsh Presbyterian Jonn PINKERTON of County Antrim, Ireland, was one of the few Ventura County pioneers to make his fortune in the California gold rush. Like most other of the Scots-Irish, John's first stop on arrival in the United States was Philadelphia.
Family legend has it that it was in Philadelphia that John became engaged to be married. Shortly before the wedding was to take place, he and his fiancee went for a ride in a buggy and were caught in a terrible storm. His sweetheart caught pneumonia and died. It was for this reason that John never married and it was for the same reason that PINKERTON left Philadelphia to search for adventure and riches in the far West.
By 1868, the 36-year-old Irishman had sufficient funds to purchase land in the Upper Ojai: 250 acres at $5.00 per acre. In the Ventura County Great Register of Voters, 1873, John listed himself as a "grain and stock farmer." It was not long before his 250 acres was producing apricots, peaches and pears as well.
Although John PINKERTON never married, he was, nevertheless, responsible for a great number of PINKERTONS residing in Ventura County. The first to arrive from County Antrim was nephew Click on Redball for More Info.<--- William John PINKERTON. Willie John, as he was called in Ireland, had dreamt of the day he could immigrate to the United States the day that he could join his Uncle John in the land of opportunity. One day, as he was digging peat - an occupation he detested - he was approached by an agent from a shipping line. For just three years labor, he was told, he would receive "free" passage to the United States - an offer W. J. PINKERTON could not refuse. Sister Annie agreed to accompany htm and in short order both were bound for the Iowa farm of the indenturing farmer who had underwritten his passsage. Three hard years later, both were in residence on the Upper Ojai farm of Uncle John PINKERTON.
Initially, Willie John worked with his uncle on the farm, supplementing his income by cutting and selling firewood at $8 per cord.
John
Before long, however the second California Gold Rush provided him an extraordinary opportunity for making his own fortune. Only the most enterprising dared apply. It is tribute to PINKERTON's love for farming that he did so. Willie John PINKERTON took it upon himself to drill for oil when and where Union Oil decided it was too dangerous to do so. From a contract dated 1896: "Union Oil has been deterred from extending and operating said tunnel [Adams Canyon No. 3 Tunnel, Rancho Ex-Mission]...by the consideration of the extrahazardous and dangerous character of such mining operations, as has been proven by accidents resulting in loss of life and injuries to health and bodies of workmen employed therein.... "PINKERTON has agreed to extend tunnel 1,000 feet and to assume all risks, dangers, hazards and responsi- bilities incident to or connected with said work and operations so as to relieve and exempt party of the first part [Union Oil] wholly and in every respect from any and all liability for damages." PINKERTON was not allowed "to sublet" - would receive a $500 bonus if the tunnel were completed in one year; a $500 penalty if the work werenot completed within the allotted time. Cousins Rachel and Elizabeth Gamble were imported by Willie John in 1885 to feed his crew of 75 pioneer drillers; later, sister Elizabeth joined the group as well. By 1898, Willie John had completed his last job (approximately 30 tunnels), accumulated sufficient capital to purchase 50 acres of choice Santa Paula y Saticoy land, vowed never to leave the flat land again, and returned to Ireland to fetch a bride.
He returned with the lovely Catherine Campbell, 20 years his junior, who convinced Willie John that the more formal William John would better serve him as a name. Catherine had not been ecstatic at the thought of leaving her beloved Ireland nor was she ecstatic at the sight other new home. "My mother cried most of the way to the farm because when she got to California and she saw all this dry ground, whereas Ireland was so green, she wondered what she was getting into- why had she done such a stupid thing?" [as reported by James PINKERTON] However she felt on her arrival, Catherine adjusted remarkably well. In due time, the PINKERTONs built a lovely home, acquired an additional 13 acres as well as $200 worth of children: Susan May, James, William, Robert, John, Wesley, Agnes and Edwin. It is third son, Robert, who loves to repeat this favorite family tale: Dr. Mott, the PINKERTON family physician, charged $25 for each delivery - hence the PINKERTONs, with 8 children, were possessed of $200 worth of children. Robert remembers as well the wood stove his mother used to bake bread; her fresh-churned butter; the two milk cows which kept the family supplied with fresh milk; the family orchard which provided apples for the "best apple pie in the world." James, too, remembered Catherine as "the best cook in the world," his never-to-be-forgotten favorite? Fried chicken and gravy - home grown flock, of course. Today, the PINKERTON family common holdings include the 51-acre "Lower Ranch" which is planted to lemons, as well as the 63-acre "Home Place," planted to lemons and avocados. The various families have their own private farms as well. William John and Catherine's great grandchildren, Douglas and Catherine PINKERTON, have entered animals in the 1988 Ventura County Fair: Douglas, an Angus/Brangus cross named Wilbur; Catherine, a blue-spotted Nubian goat called Splash. We wish them well! -P.C.C.
