Submitter: William H. "Bill" Adams HAMPTON, Reuben R.

Reuben Rogers HAMPTON was born and raised in eastern Tennessee, near the Cumberland Gap. The issue of slavery in the 1850s split many families and his was no exception. His sisters Sarah (Hampton) INGRAM, Amy (Hampton) WALKER, and Thinza (Hampton) HUTSON moved to Page Co., Iowa in 1857. In 1860, he moved his family to Danville, IN where he had relatives, then about 1869 he moved on to Page Co., Iowa, where his sisters lived with their husbands. Reuben found the sod too tough to bust and the prairie full of rattlesnakes. The rattlesnakes there were so plentiful that they had to wrap the horses legs with sacks to protect them while plowing. At the end of each furrow they had to stop, remove the snakes whose fangs were caught in the burlap, and kill them, at least that was the story. The stop in Iowa may have been intended as permanent or it may have just been a long visit. Undoubtedly, his Uncle Charles MERRITT, who had moved to California in 1851, had written letters back to William MERRITT and Reuben Hampton extolling California to them. Most likely that is why Reuben chose to settle his family in the Napa Valley sometime between 1871 and 1878. I would like any information on their stay in Page Co. and would like to contact descendants.

Submitter: Bill Remington HILL, Josephine

I am seeking information concerning my grandmother: born Josephine HILL, "near shanbaugh (or clarinda)" 03 Aug. 1883. She married Guy Amos Remington, b. 31 Aug. 1880 'near Shambaugh, son of D. D. Remington and Grandson Amos Remington. Guy lists the same location of birth, probably on nearby farms that were somewhere between Shambaugh and Clarinda. I do not (yet) know the date or location of their marriage, but, since they were both from this same area, I would guess that they were married in this area.
They migrated to Idaho where most of their children were born. Guy Remington had three sisters (2 born in Page County) who similarly migrated west.
I am looking for more info on Josephine HILL and the HILL family. Also any info on the marriage would be great.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Submitter: Norman Jessen HOAG, Family

I have been researching my wife's family who resided in the So.Westen area of Iowa, originating as settlers in and around Blanchard, Page Co., Iowa. I am in particular inquiring about Mrs. Frank L.Greene, born Grace Hoag in 1874. Grace Greene died in 1852 and buried in the Blanchard Cemetery. Grace is my wife's grandmother and we would like to develop the names of her family members.
The point of this message is to ask if you know of someone in the Blanchard area willing to check the Cemetery records there to find the information we seek. We know that she and several other people named Hoag are buried in the same section. We would be willing to pay a reasonable fee. Please advise me if you know of someone capable of doing this research. Thank You.

Found your account Moses Hoskins decendents most interesting. My father was Floyd Elbert Hoskins son of Floyd E. and Ruby M. I'm not aware that he was ever called Bert nor that he ever fathered a son. I believe he was called Elbert early in life, but was called Floyd in his later years. He was born in Paonia, Colorado on August 1, 1912 and died August 26, 2001. He married my mother, Hyllis Elaine Howard in 1939. She was the daughter of Arthur and Rhoda Howard and was born in Page County, Iowa on October 9, 1914 and died on January 6, 2000. She and my father were divorced in 1946.
I was born Shirley Jean Hoskins at Long Beach, California on April 19, 1940. My only son, Thomas Randall Pruitt was born on June 11, 1968. I currently live in Salida, Colorado.
My sister, Marilyn Ruby Hoskins, was born In Long Beach, California on November 23, 1942. She currently resides in Shenandoah, Iowa. Hope this helps with an update.

Submitter: Sandy Brace HURLBURT, Amos

In 1853 Amos and Amy D (Prine) Hurlburt left Monkton, VT and headed toward Iowa. As yet I don't know how they arrived. Their son Wallace Perry Hurlburt was 2 years old having been born in 1850 ( don't have a day or month yet.) They had 7 children in all but so far I have information on 4 including Wallace. Other children that I have information on are

  • 1. Charles O who married Emma L Mulford,
  • 2. Curtis Frank who married Nettie Davis,
  • 3. Wallace Perry who married Sarah Emma Smith and
  • 4. Nellie who married Joseph Hogan
Nellie stayed in Iowa while the 3 boys went with Amos and Amy. Since the boys were grown and married I feel that it is more then likely that Amy and Amos went with their boys. As far that I know they stayed in Page County the entire time that they were in Iowa. I would like to get any information that I can since I am unable to go to Iowa.
Thank You
