Obituaries were published quite early in Pottawattamie County; however, they are somewhat "spotty" until around the turn of the century. The Frontier Guardian and other very early 1850s and 1860s newspapers recorded many pioneer deaths, but not always with consistency.

The Pottawattamie County Genealogical Society has an index to obituaries from 1857 to the present. It is continually being expanded, so please keep checking with us.

The research staff at the Frontier Heritage Library will be happy to search for information on a death and/or obituary for anyone who died in our area and provide this data for a small donation. Please e-mail us if you need this type of material.  Please include as much information as possible (deceased's name, date of death, place of death, if known, etc.) and put "Obit" on the subject line of your e-mail.
