I have a class photo which includes my Great Grandmother and her sister taken in 1888. On the back is written the names of nearly every student and the principal Mr. Sampson. The school name included on a chalk board held by one student says South Valley School, Room #5.
There are 19 names listed and I just bet someone would love to find their ancestors school photo.
Is/was this school in Burlington?
Underneath all the names Burlington, Iowa 1888 is written. The studio name on the back of the photo is Studio Murillo, 906 to 912 North Sixty Street, St. Louis, MO. My Great Grandmother (Elizabeth CLENDENIN) and her sister did live a while in Burlington with their Aunt Emma and Uncle Luke PALMER at 303 So. 6th St. In fact in one letter from Elizabeth to her father (dated Nov. 13, 1888) who was an Army Surgeon, Dr. Paul Clendenin, she writes that the name of her teacher is Miss Senate. There is a woman in the photo that is not named, perhaps this is Miss Senate.
