Cemetery

Oakhill Cemetery is located just east of Hancock, about 1-1/2 miles along Highway 59. It can also be reached from Interstate 80 by turning south from Exit 40 and traveling approximately nine miles. It is on the east side of the highway. It was part of the Whipple farm. William W. Whipple and his wife came to the valley in 1872 and settled on a farm 1-1/2 miles east of the Nishnabotna River. The town of Hancock was not in existence at that time.

In the year 1882, the Whipple's sold the farm to James and Ellen Jamison. On 6 Juen 1883, the Jamisons sold a portion of the farm to the Valley Township Trustees for a cemetery, which was surveyed in August.

On June 30, 1891,Valley Township Trustees sold the cemetery to the town of Hancock. The cemetery has had two additions, which were purchased from Mr. & Mrs. Karstens in 1952 and 1976.
