Cemeteries

Note from the Webmaster: The information we have on some of the cemteries is pretty sketchy. If you have anything you can add, please e-mail me. Thanks!

The cemeteries in our county fall into two distinct groups: those outside the city limits of Council Bluffs and those within the city limits. We are fortunate to also have TWO great genealogical societies within our county: The Pottawattamie County Genealogical Society and the East Pottawattamie County Genealogical Society, better know as Botna Valley Genealogical Society. Botna Valley was formed approximately ten years ago, preceding the PCGS however, BOTH groups work together extremely well and realize the importance of joint efforts.

Botna Valley GS originally began the cemetery project by reading all the cemeteries in the county, EXCLUDING the City of Council Bluffs. When the PCGS was formed, they accepted the responsibility of platting the burials within the city limits of Council Bluffs. There are numerous LARGE cemeteries in this city!

Botna Valley published the material they had gathered on the burials in our outlying townships through the Iowa Genealogical Society.  The PCGS has completed recording several of the cemeteries in Council Bluffs, and interested persons may also acquire these through the Iowa Genealogical Society. This collection includes: Walnut Hill Cemetery, St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Clark Cemetery, Green Valley Cemetery and Fairview Cemetery. We are currently working on Cedar Lawn Cemetery, the Jewish Cemetery and Ridgewood Cemetery. There is one other cemetery yet to be recorded - Memorial Park. The latter two cemeteries are the newest ones in Council Bluffs.

The Pottawattamie County Genealogical Society HAS ALL THE BOOKS which have been published by BOTH groups. Furthermore, it has a very large data base provided by our local cemetery association which includes ALL of the burials in Walnut Hill, Cedar Lawn, Memorial Park and Ridgewood.

Thank you for taking time to read this. Your interest and co-operation are appreciated.
