BIOGRAPHY: Darius Chapter No. 50, R.A.M.—Was instituted February 1st,
1871. The charter members were: Wm. McKay, W.H. Hobbs, E.R. Duffie, E.R. Chase, S.S.
Armstrong, J. Orr, and Oliver Birt. First officers: E.R. Chase, H.P.; J.E. Armstrong, K.;
E.R. Duffie, S. The present officers are: Levi Davis, H.P.; D.C. Early, K.; J.E.
Armstrong, S.; R.H. Lamoreux, Treasurer; Sidney Smith Secretary. Present membership,
seventy. The Lodge meets on the Monday evening on or before the full moon in each month.
CHRISTENING: Was listed as Oliver Burt in the church records,
showing a James Burt and Mary as the parents. Found a James Birt married to a Mary
Verender (was also misspelled in the church records, its Verinder) on the 9 Aug. 1825.
Could not find anything on other children only on Oliver. So I do not know if they had any
other children.

"In the winter of 1869 the men who owned
the saw, sawed from the virgin forests a lot of square timbers, from six inches to 12
inches square, also a lot of 3 inch dimension, and boards.
They planned a three story grist mill about forty by ninety feet. They employed my father, an old time heavy frame
carpenter. He went ahead and chose the timber, squared, laid off and marked every piece
with a scratch - all just where every tenon, mortise or draw pin hole was to be. He did
this without a blueprint.
The
owners let him hire as many men as he could look after. They used boring machines, chisels
, corner chisels, heavy wood mallets, saws, hand and cross cut saws, and there was much
activity. It was a big job and you might think it strange that a stranger would be trusted
with so big a job. He had built a large frame barn the summer before and had hewed out
this timber from the forest ------
The
building of the mill was a big job even with a large force, and it took several weeks one
day a stranger came and set down on a timber and asked what they were building. They told
him it was a grist or flour mill. He asked for a job and was sent to the boss. He asked if
he was a carpenter and he said, no, but he could crank a boring machine, or pull one end
of a cross cut saw, so he got a job and went quietly to work. Someone asked where he was
from - he was recently from Oklahoma but his home was in Pennsylvania. He finally told
them he was a miller by trade, and he worked on until the building was done and was a very
useful man, helping the millwright install the machinery, and it was all done .Oliver
Birt, the wanderer, become the miller and held his job until the angry Raccoon tipped the
mill over.
The
ownership partly changed hands and the new owners decided to teardown the old frame and
rebuild it, on a new ditch close to the foot of the hill. The dam was hard to keep in
repair so a thirty horse power gas engine was installed. The old miller had given up hi
job ----- Little by little it went the way of small industry and a farmer bought the
building and moved it out for a barn on the Lewis Lee farm."
NOTE: Sac Sun, March 10, 1882. "The Grant City mill tumbled
into the river Friday morning. Most of the grist's were out of the mill, but about 800
bushels of wheat, and some two tons of flour were lost.

of a note in the Birth records of Sac County, I know that there were 9 children, Clifford
being number 9. Though only 6 lived 3passed away in early childhood.

BIOGRAPHY: He operated a store in his hometown for several years,
and later one at Ulmer, also a flour mill at Grant City till 1882 when the river
undermined it and swept it away. He served his town as Mayor,postmaster, member of the
school board, and Justice of the Peace, the latter office being held at the time of his
death.
WRITING: The following was written by James S. Birt.
Mill used by the people from wide territory.
I came to Grant
City in August 1869 with my mother and brother Robert when a little over 13 years old, and
found Grant City a village on the north side of the Coon River at the extreme south end of
the peninsula -a beautiful location, just south of the big grove of timber which extended
far up the river for 2 miles. The village had
a 2 story brick school house, a 2 story brick general store, a frame post office and
grocery store, a flour, feed and saw mill, blacksmith wagon and paint shop, brick yard,
shingle machine, charcoal yards and hotel. There were 26 residents buildings, 8 of which
were log cabins.

Flour Mill.
The general store
was operated by Fred Wright, the post office and grocery was operated by Joseph Williams
as postmaster and owner of the grocery department. The flour mill was a 3 story 30 x 50
frame building with saw mill attached in first half of first floor. It was built in 1867
and 1868 by G H Wright of Grant City, and O R Jones of Jefferson as proprietors. My
father, Oliver Birt was the miller. He had precede his family to Grant City two years. In
1873 Wright and Jones sold the mill toluene and Birt, who operated it until the spring of
1882 when the river undermined it, cutting in at the north end of the dam, washing the
mill away. It was a total loss with 1500 bushels of wheat, 3 tons of flour and other mill
feeds at the time. The following two years a race was dug panda new mill built but it
never was a success. Many years before, a mill was built farther up the stream near the
Grant City Cemetery by Wm. Lane, but it was destroyed by floods. This was perhaps the
first mill operated in Sac County. The black smith and wagon shop was operated by Wm.
Impson, Sr. Until his death. The brick yard was operated by Daniel Lee and brothers. The
brick yard business finally was taken over by George Hicks, and successfully operated for
many years.
Horse
Power Shingle Machine.
The Shingle Machine
was operated by John Boyd on the property now occupied by Bertha Pease. He sawed blocks of
timber somewhat longer than the common shingles of today, split them in quarters, steamed
them in a tank having a U shaped blade fastened on an upright shaft with a sweep on which
a horse was hitched. Every round of the horse slice off a nice long shingle which made the
roof for many buildings. In connection with his lime kiln, bringing the lime rock from
across the river, and charcoal yards were just south of the school house, on the property
of the Higgins Estate. This was operated by Davey Reynolds. He sold the coal to the
various blacksmiths throughout the County. The hotel was run by the J J Nicholas family.
Made
Corn Planter.
In the seventies, J
P Carr, with the assistance of a man from Buena Vista County, named Hunt, manufactured a
hand corn planter on the Carr farm east of Grant City, but the horse planter came in and
put them out of business. In the eighties a skating rink about 40 x 125 was built in Grant City by J P Carr and
associates. It was successful for a while but was not successful as an investment. In 1881
the Methodist church was built with the assistance of the Baptists and the general public
for many miles around. The dedication was made by the Methodist minister from Sac City,
entirely out of debt. Joseph Jones, John Grey and Wm. Hawks were the first trustees of the
church. This was a large church. This structure was destroyed buy the Cyclone (tornado) on
May 3, 1919; as also 6 dwelling houses and several others were damaged, along with several
out buildings. I well remember when Mr. Shannon's barn was taken. A jersey cow, which was
very troublesome in the vicinity , was in the building. She was somewhat crippled, but
still had that defying appearance of being still in the ring, too much for even a cyclone
(tornado).
Ferry Boat in 1872.
In the nineties,
Grant City, the second oldest town in the county, appropriated for school purposes. In
1872 or 1873 a ferry boat was operated by Dr. Higgins as captain. A large rope was
stretched across the river south of town, and the transfer was made by man power. Many
emigrants were transferred across the river that summer, a necessity being to the fact
that the bridge was washed out during the spring floods. We had real floods in those days.
In the nineties a steamer was run from the millpond for a distance of 2 miles up the river
by the Thomas boys.
