Discharge Papers for Johannes
"John" Eggers

Here is a discharge from the Civil War for Johannes
(later known as John) Eggers who was a resident of Davenport and served in the
First Iowa Volunteer Infantry. The writing is very light/faded and in
brown ink (so I don't know how this will come off on the site) but I thought it
might be something for the military section of the Scott County site.
Basically it says he was a private in Captain Wentz's company I, First Iowa
Volunteer Infantry, enrolled on the 20th of April 1861 to serve 3 months and was
discharged 21 August 1861 at St. Louis Arsenal Mo., by reason of expiration of
term of service. The date of this document is 17 July 1866 and it was
given at Davenport, Iowa.
As you may know, at the beginning of the war, the
Federal Gov't enlisted men only for 3 months because they didn't think it would
take even that long to put down the "rebellion". Of course, that
proved not to be the case and many men joined other units at the expiration of
their 3 month service (such as John Eggers and many other Scott County men who
then joined the 2nd Missouri Light Artillery and, in the case of Eggers, served
3 years).
