There have been several organized efforts in collecting and publishing the grave marker readings for the Dubuque County area. We have organized this page by the areas where a particular city or cities are. In this way, if you knew what area a person lived in, you can zone in on specific cemeteries in the area. Please keep in mind, that each area may include cemeteries from multiple townships and even a county outside of Dubuque.
Some of the efforts include:
The Daughters of the American Revolution (1939) - incomplete
The Dubuque County Historical Society (1976) - incomplete
Dubuque County-Key City Genealogical Society (DC-KCGS) (1986-current). This is still an on going project which helps fund their other endeavors. If you are interested in their publications you should contact them directly to purchase a copy or visit the Carnegie-Stout Public Library to look at a copy in the reference area. The Center for Dubuque History also may have copies of their publications. Their books may contain valuable research materials in addition to stone readings. Their publications which contain readings are listed on this page.
The Phoenix Project (2001-current). Started in early October 2001, The Phoenix Group is dedicated to providing free materials for the Dubuque County Iowa area researcher. Cemetery readings and research is all published free of charge on the Internet. Other materials may be published through the Center for Dubuque History. 100% of the sale of items published through the Center for Dubuque History stay in the CDH. Our readings and research can be found on hyperlinks on this page.
The tables below list the cemeteries and the groups who read that cemetery. A publication name is provided where one exists. Hopefully the information on this page will help the researcher track down what readings they would like to use in their research.
Where can I find these readings or publications?
1939 readings - Dubuque County Grave Records, Volume 56, compiled
by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller for the Daughters of the American Revolution --
1939.
1976 readings - Dubuque County Cemeteries. A paper-bound copy is
available for reference at the Iowa State Historical Society. A microfilm copy
is available from the LDS church (Salt Lake City, UT) and at the DC-KCGS
(donated by Nancy Lepsch).
DC-KCGS readings - Their readings are published by township, generally.
See the reading efforts by township page for
the name of the publication where readings for a particular cemetery are at. Write them and order a book or visit the Carnegie-Stout Public Library
and look in the reference area or at the Center for Dubuque History.
Phoenix Project readings - Follow the hyperlinks on the cemetery name. :-)
Notes:
The colors in the tables below are only separators to make the list (somewhat) easier to read. They do not indicate anything special about the cemetery.
If a township name is hyperlinked, following that link will take you to a page that may contain other materials relating to that township.
