OTO, Iowa - Gretchen Margaret Coon, 86, formerly of Oto
died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Embassy Towers Care Center in Sergeant Bluff.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa,
with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park
Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a prayer
service at 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Mrs. Coon was born July 31, 1914, in
Milo, Iowa, the daughter of Alvin Nathan and Ella Ethel (Tallman) Oldaker. She
graduated from Milo High School in 1932. She married Kenneth W. Coon on April
28, 1934. The couple farmed near Oto until 1972, when they moved to Sioux City.
Her husband died March 9, 1987. She was in charge of the lunch program at Oto
school for many years. While living in Sioux City, she was employed with Billy
Sunday Nursing Home. She entered Embassy Tower Care Center in October 1995.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Allenson of Anoka, Minn., and Ellen and
her husband, Marvin Drenkhahn of Mapleton; six grandchildren; 15
great-grandchildren; and a sister and her husband, Lorraine and Raymond
Shoemaker of Milo. She was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
OBITUARY, Anthon Herald, March 1987; Kenneth W. Coon, 70, 312 E. 34th St., South Sioux City, NE, died Monday March 9, 1987, in a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. Rev. Robert S. Enck, pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church officiated. Interment was in Dakota City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Daniel Drenkhahn, Dennis Drenkhahn, Donald Allinson, Steve Erickson, Jason Boyd and John Schweninger. Mr. Coon was born to Virgil and Bessie (Phillips) Coon on April 29, 1916, in Grant Township in Iowa. He farmed in the Oto area until 1971 when he moved to Sioux City. He married Gretchen Oldaker on April 28, 1934, in Milo, IA. He drove a school bus at Oto for 25 years. He served on the Woodbury ASC for a time. After moving to Sioux City he worked for Seig Co. until his retirement. On October 18, 1982, he married Maxine Boyd in Vermillion, SD. Survivors include his wife, 2 daughters, Ellen Drenkhahn of Mapleton and Carolyn Allinson of Spring Park, MN, a stepson, Ken Boyd of South Sioux City and a stepdaughter, Carol Schweninger of Derby, KS, a sister, Opal Hummel of Oto, 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 4 step-grandchildren. Anthon Herald, 31 July 1996: Evelyn M. Coon, 80, died of cancer on Saturday, July 20, 1996, at her home near Oto, IA. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 24, 10:30 a.m. at Oto United Church of Christ with Pastor Karen Hanke officiating. Pall bearers were James Coon, Patrick Miller, Kevin Jordan, Jay Arenas, Adam James, William DePuy and Steve Mulligan. Burial was in Oto Cemetery under direction of Armstrong Funeral Service. Evelyn was born July 2, 1916, in Danbury, IA, the daughter of Mark and Anna (Dose) Anderson. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and since childhood was a member of and regularly attended the Oto United Church of Christ. On January 28, 1933, Evelyn married Wayne Coon at Elk Point, SD, and throughout their married life they farmed the place where Wayne was born. He died December 6, 1986. Evelyn enjoyed gardening, working at church and ceramics. She was a member of the Farm Women's Club, the Oto United Church of Christ and the Ladies Mite Society. Survivors include her daughter, Beverly Benton and her husband Oren of Denver, CO; her daughter in law, Norma Coon of Dubuque, IA; 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, Helen DeBoer of Artesia, CA, and Mildred Kounkel and her husband Ralph of LeMars; her brother, William Andersen and his wife Marjorie of Gilmore City, IA. ANTHON, Iowa - John Ernest Coon, 83, of Bushnell, Ill., formerly of Anthon, died Tuesday, April 22, 1997, at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Ill. Graveside services were held Friday, April 25, in Bushnell Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Bushnell Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1422. Martin-Hollis Funeral Home in Bushnell was in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Coon was born April 15, 1914, in Anthon, the son of Aaron and Cora (Pierce) Coon. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a farmer. Mr. Coon was a member of the Methodist Church in Bushnell. Survivors include a son, Danny E. Coon of Killeen, Texas; a daughter, Linda M. Reed of Columbia Heights, Minn.; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother, Clifford Coon of Sioux City; and a sister, Lucille Dennis of Holstein, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Anthon community until 1937 when they moved to Sioux City. He worked for Reliable Furniture Company for 20 years. Mrs. Coon died March 10, 1985, in Sioux City. OBITUARY, Correctionville News, 29 March 1919, page 1: Wesley Merle Coon was born August 4, 1918, and died March 23, 1919, at the home of his grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. George Workman. His father, Wesley Coon, preceded him to the great beyond last March on the 17th, also a brother on March 23, 1915. He leaves to mourn his departure his mother and brother, Ray, his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Workman and Mr. and Mrs. John Coon besides many other relatives. After thirty-two days of suffering death came and released him from it all. The funeral services were conducted at the home of George Workman Monday, March 24, at 2:30p.m. by Rev. Bertha Brown. Interment was made in the Correctionville Cemetery.

Obituary
William Wesley Coon was born the 15th day of March, 1896, was married to Miss
Myrtle Workman in 1914, and passed away March 17, 1918, being 22 years and two
days old at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, one son Ray, and
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Coon, and three brothers and ten sisters. He
was ill with a bad cold for some two weeks, but did not take to his bed until
four days before his death, when his illness was pronounced pneumonia, and
nothing could be done for him.
Wesley was born here and has lived in this vicinity all his life. The funeral was held from the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon in charge of Rev. Mark Masters, and was very largely attended by sorrowing relatives and friends. Those here from a distance to attend the funeral were Mrs. W. T. Parker of Lake Andes, S.D.; Harry Coon of Westerbrook, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. W W. Coon of Sioux City, and Mr. and Mrs. Geo Hathaway of Sioux City.
OBITUARY, Cherokee paper, 17 April 1968: Elmer Coon, 73, died at 6 a.m. Tuesday in Cherokee following a week's illness. His home as at 334 East Maple. He had lived in Cherokee the past 21 years having farmed in the Correctionville area. Born September 5, 1894, at Correctionville, he was married to Edith Workman December 23, 1912, in Sioux City, Iowa. From 1949-1965 he had been custodian at Cherokee County courthouse. He was a member of the Correctionville Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Edith, Cherokee; 2 daughters, Ms. Albert Carstens of Green Brae, CA, and Mrs. Floyd Garlock of San Rafael, CA; and a son, Robert Coon, Sioux City; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Eight sisters also survive. His parents, a daughter, four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Thursday at First Church of Christ here with minister of the church, Phil Gardner, officiating. Burial under direction of Boothby Funeral Home is to be in Oak Hill Cemetery

Following Years of Ill Health, Mrs. Oscar Coon Died Friday Morning at Mother's
Home.
After several years of suffering, death came Friday morning to Mrs. Oscar Coon
at the home of her mother, Mrs. Peters, at Anthon.
Mrs. Coon has been able at most times to be around and do her own work, but three
weeks ago she became bedfast and a little over a week ago it was thought best to
take her to her mother's home at Anthon where she could be under the more
immediate care of the physician. But nothing could avail to prolong her frail
life and death came to relieve her suffering Friday morning. For her life's sun
had set at noon.
Nellie J. Peters was born at Battle Creek, Iowa February 11, 1900 and when five
years old she moved with her parents to Woodbury county. She was married in
1918 to Oscar Coon. They have made their home near Correctionville since their
marriage now living on a farm south of town.
Two children came to bless their home, Beulah, aged nine and Roland, aged
eight. Besides her husband and children she is survived by her mother, Mrs.
Peters, and three brothers, George, John, and Edward, all of Anthon.
Mrs. Coon was a member of the Methodist church having united with that branch of
the Christian faith at the age of fifteen.
The body was cared for by the Wilson Funeral Service. Services in charge of
Rev. J. A. Kettle were held at the Methodist church here Monday afternoon and
burial was made in the Correctionville cemetery

Services will be Monday in North Sacramento Funeral Home in Sacramento, Calif. Burial will be in Sierra Hills Memorial Park in Sacramento. Mrs. Coon, the former Florence H. Luce was born November 9, 1907, in Lewis Station, Missouri, and moved to Sioux City at the age of 12.. She married Albert E. Coon. He preceded her in death. She moved to Sacramento in 1970 and most recently had been living in Stockton with her daughter. Survivors include two daughters, Harriet Ralston of North Highlands, CA; and Alberta Manier of Stockton; two sons, Jimmie of Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Darwin of Sioux City; three sisters, Grace Clausen of Mapleton, Iowa; Delores Egger of Rochester, N.Y.; and Norabelle Hayes of Red Bluff, Calif; two brothers Kenneth of Sioux City and Donald of Denver, Colorado; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Mrs. Hayworth, the former Iva Belle Coon, was born August 12, 1900, in Oto. She lived in the Oto and Anthon community for many years. She married Ivel Hayworth May 12, 1919, in Anthon. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1957. He died May 3, 1964, in Minneapolis. She had resided in Pleasant View nursing home in Whiting for four years. Mrs. Hayworth was of Jehovah's Witness faith. Survivors include 3 daughters, Mrs. Doris Thompson of Sioux City, Mrs Leo (Maxine) Dicks and Mrs Leonard (Phyllis) Dowling, both of Hornick, a son, Norman T. of Garner, IA, 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.

Dies After an Operation
Virgil Coon Dies Following an Operation for Appendicitis. Many Relatives Here.
Virgil Coon, of Oto, nephew of Mrs. Mary Worthan, Mrs. C. O. Ashmore and John
Coon, of Correctionville, and a son of Perry Coon of Oto, died last Thursday,
March 14. He went to the St. Joseph hospital in Sioux City the Sunday prior to
his death and underwent an operation for appendicitis; but he had waited too
long and it was impossible to save his life.
Funeral services were held at the Federated church in his home town, Oto, and
burial was made in the Oto cemetery.
He leaves to mourn his death, his widow, three children, and many relatives and
friends.

Anthon Herald: Services were held Thursday, October 19, 1978, for Corda Rebecca Coon, 95, who died in Healdsburg Hospital Monday following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Coon was a resident of Cloverdale, but had lived in the Sonoma County area for many years. She was a native of Unionville, Iowa, and a homemaker all her life. She was a member of the Geyserville Christian Church, belonged to the Geyserville Rebekahs and was a past member and officer of the Geyserville Grange. Mrs. Coon was the wife of the late Jefferson M. Coon, Sr., and is survived by four sons, Vernie R. Coon, Cloverdale; Thomas V. Coon, Cloverdale, Jefferson M. Coon, Jr, Iowa, and Ray L. Coon Santa Rosa, a daughter Darlene Del Sarto, Cloverdale; a brother, Dick Hayworth, Iowa; 14 Grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, 3 sons, and 1 daughter. Pallbearers were 6 of her great grandchildren and 6 of her great grandchildren were honorary pallbearers. Services were at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Fred Young and Co. in Healdsburg with interment at Oak Mound Cemetery.

3: Funeral services for John Coon, long time resident of Correctionville who
passed away Thursday, June 1, 1950, in a Sioux City nursing home, were held
Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Wilson-Hull Funeral Home. Mr. Coon had
been in failing
health for several years. S. L. Schuler, pastor of the Church of Christ,
officiated at the service. Music was furnished by the recording
system-"Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "In the Garden". Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Henderson cared for the flowers and Cleve Robinson arranged the cars. The
pallbearers were Fred Ashmore, Howard Ashmore, Clifford Ashmore, Harold Walker,
Ray Worthan and Sam Worthan. Burial was made in the Correctionville Cemetery.
John Coon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Coon, was born January 13, 1866, at Spring
Green, Wisconsin. He lived most of his days in and around Correctionville,
coming to Iowa when a boy of about 12 years of age. He was united in Marriage
to Musetta Anderson, September 21, 1891. After their marriage they farmed west
of the Bethel Church for a number of years, then they purchased a farm south of
Correctionville on which they lived until he was forced to retire due to failing
health. At that time, they purchased a home in Correctionville in which they
lived until his wife's death three years ago. To this union 14 children were
born. He leaves to mourn his death, eleven children- Elmer Coon, Meriden; Oscar
Coon, Douglas, WY; Goldie Anfinson, Cushing; Cecil Peterson, Pierson; Elva
McCleerey, Bothell, WA; Ferne Murray, Los Angeles, CA; Verle Pilot, Berkeley,
CA; Eva Hunsader, Los Angeles, CA; Margie Ferretti, Portland, OR; Wanda
McWilliams, Richmond, CA;
25 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Worthan of
Correctionville. His wife, two sons and one daughter preceded him in death.

February 6, 1931, at the home of his son, Harry Coon, in Chicago and was laid to
rest on Monday, being 68 years of age. Isaac was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion
Coon, and lived in this community until 17 years ago when he moved to Minnesota,
in which state he resided until 7 years ago when he went to Chicago which as
since been his home. He leaves to mourn his passing his widow, whose parents
were Mr. and Mrs. Alex Varvel, who were among the oldest settlers
of Correctionville; 1 son, Harry Coon; and 2 daughters, Mrs. Arthur Uvaas and
Mrs. Carl Migg all of Chicago; also two brothers, John of Correctionville and
Mrs. Mary Worthen of Billings, Montana, besides a host of relatives and friends.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home. Rev. Anthony Blanders will officiate with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Earl Pierce, Clifford and Art Coon, Wayne Livermore, Duane Thies and Russell White, Jr. Mr. Coon was born July 4, 1898, near Anthon, IA. He lived in Woodbury County most of his life, moving to Sioux City in 1930. He married Myrtle Scoles May 21, 1921, at Ida Grove, IA. He worked for several years as a maintenance man for Woodbury County. He also had a milk route in Sioux City for 23 years and worked for the American Popcorn C. for 13 years before retiring in 1964. Mr. Coon was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Survivors include the widow, a brother Albert of Sioux City; and three sisters, Mrs. Jennie Pierce and Mrs. Iva Hayworth, both of Sioux City and Mrs. Mary Hayworth of Anthon.

CONDRON – In Sioux City, Ia., Wednesday, September 16, 1908, Andrew Condron, 302 South Wall street, aged 82 years. The deceased man was a veteran of the civil war and a member of the G.A.R. He lived in Sioux City thirty-one years. He is survived by a wife and six children, William, Thomas, John, James, Andrew and Anna, all of Sioux City (Sioux City Journal, Thurs. morning, 17 Sep 1908, 8).
Fred M. Christiansen – Services for Fred M. Christiansen, 83, Sergeant Bluff, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the W. Harry Christy Funeral Home in Morningside. The Rev. Gregory G. Caldwell, of the Community United Methodist Church [sic] at Sergeant Bluff, will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. There will be a flag presentation conducted by the American Legion George Nelson Post 662.
Mr. Christiansen died Tuesday at a hospital in Onawa, Iowa after a long illness (Sioux City Journal, Thurs. 1 Feb 1979, A5).
OBITUARY, Correctionville News, 2 December 1948: Mrs. Laura Amelia North Coon, 79 years of age, a former Correctionville resident and widow of Isaac Coon, died at the home of her daughter at Vista, Calif., November 22, 1948. She was the sister of Mrs. Clara North Walker of this place. Mrs. Coon was born near Boone, Iowa, the daughter of John and Mary North. As a child she lived with her parents on a farm near Early and Odebolt and at the age of 18 moved with them to a farm near Correctionville. She was married here and moved to California 30 years ago. She leaves three children, Mrs. George S. Nahas of Vista, Calif., Fran and Russell Coon of Los Angeles. In March of this year, her son, John N. Coon, 44, passed away in Los Angeles. He was an executive with the RKO studios, heading their transportation department many years. Funeral rites for Mrs. Coon took place Wednesday, November 24, in Los Angeles at the Edwards Brothers Colonial Mortuary with interment in the nearby Inglewood Park Cemetery.
OBITUARY, Oto Observer, 26 April, 1933: Gloom was cast over the town and community Thursday morning by the sudden death of one of our highly respected citizens and retired farmers, Perry Coon. Mr. Coon had been in his usual health and had been working out on his farm east of town tenanted by his son, Jeff, and on Wednesday evening was downtown. Death was due to heart trouble, and being so sudden it was an awful shock to all. Perry Coon was born in Wisconsin February 6, 1857, and died April 20, 1933, at his home in Oto of heart failure at the age of 76 years, 2 month and 15 days. His childhood days were spent in Wisconsin but when a young man he moved to Indiana where he was united in marriage to Emma Long December 21, 1878. In the spring of 1891 he and his faithful wife came to Iowa and settled near Correctionville. Since that time their lives have been spent in and around the vicinity of Correctionville, Anthon and Oto. To this union 12 children were born, 9 of whom are still living to mourn his loss. One child, Jimmie, died at the age of 6 months, and the other two, Virgil and Mrs. Margaret Hayworth died in the prime of life. His wife passed away here in Oto in February, 1920. Those who are left to mourn his sudden departure are one brother, John Coon of Correctionville, two sisters, Mrs. C.O. Ashmore and Mrs. Mary Worthan of Correctionville; nine children, Jeff M. and Aaron of Oto, Albert of Anthon, Ray of Leeds, Mrs. Florence Smith of Cushing, Mrs. Mary Hayworth of Anthon, Mrs. Mabel Beeson of Washta, and Mrs. Jennie Pierce and Mrs. Iva Hayworth of Oto, 42 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends. In Indiana Mr. Coon was a member of the Dunkard church. He was affiliated with the I.O.O.F. lodge here for more than 30 years. Mr. Coon was always and upright, honest and industrious man, a kind and loving father, and a friend to all in need. His presence will be missed with regrets and his memory will linger long in the hearts of all who knew him. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Willard Bell in the Oto Federated Church Saturday at 2 p.m. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery at Anthon under the direction of Hudgel Funeral Service of Anthon. OBITUARY, Anthon Herald, 5 March 1947: Mrs. John Coon, 70, a resident of Correctionville for 61 years, died in a Sioux City hospital Thursday following a long illness. Musetta Anderson, daughter of James and Frances Anderson, was born April 9, 1876, at Harlan, Iowa, and passed away February 27, 1947, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City at the age of 70 years, 10 months and 18 days. She spent most of her life in and around Correctionville, with the exception of a few years in Colorado. She was united in marriage to John Coon September 29, 1892. She was a member of the Church of Christ and always attended services regularly as long as her health permitted. Mrs. Coon leaves to mourn her death her husband and 11 children, Elmer Coon of Cherokee, Oscar Coon of Glendo, Wyoming, Goldie Anfinson of Cushing, Cecil Peterson of Pierson, Elva Mc Cleery of Ellensburg, Washington, Ferne Murray of Los Angeles, Calif., Verle Pilot of Berkeley, Calif., Dorothy Fryar of Long Beach, Calif., Eva Hunsader of Los Angeles, Calif., Margie Ferretti of Portland, Ore., and Wanda Briese of Berkeley, Calif. Two sons and a daughter preceded her in death. Twenty-five grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Maude Ferguson of Minneapolis, Minn., one brother, Bruce Anderson of Correctionville, two half-brothers, Clarence and Ira Deeds of Aitkin, Minn., and a host of relatives and friends mourn her departure. Funeral services were held Sunday, March 2, at 2 p.m. in the Church of Christ at Correctionville. Rev. S. L. Schuler, pastor of the local church, officiated. "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages" were sang by Ferne Clark, Genevieve Lill, Wilma LeFebvre and Clair Hatfield with Dean Cockburn as accompanist. In charge of flowers were Mrs. Henry Henderson, Jr., and Mrs. Charles Page. Pallbearers were all relatives of Mrs. Coon. Arthur Perkins had the arrangement of the cars and burial was in the Correctionville Cemetery.
Sioux Valley News, January 1897: James Coon was born in Columbus County, Ohio, February 21, 1811, and departed this life January 23, 1897, aged 85 years, 11 months and 2 days. Deceased was married in Wisconsin in 1856 to Ina Blake, from which union were born seven daughters and two sons, all except one girl living to mourn the loss of a father. Mr. Coon moved to Iowa in 1876 where he has made his home until his death. Funeral services at the home of his son, Reese Coon, living south of Correctionville, conducted by George N. Thompson. Burial was made in the Correctionville Cemetery.
OBITUARY, Correctionville News, August 1946, page 1: Another aged resident of this community has answered the last summons, leaving another vacancy in the pioneer ranks. He lived to see the development of this section and knew well the hardships and privations endured by the earlier pioneers. Reese Coon, son of James and Nina Coon, was born April 14, 1861, at Spring Green, Wisconsin, and passed away after a lingering illness of two years on July 29, 1946, at a nursing home in Sioux City at the age of 85 years. When a boy of 14 he moved with his parents to a farm near Correctionville, and spent the remainder of his life in this vicinity. The family came in a covered wagon to the middle-west when it was little more than a wild rolling prairie. During the many months of his sickness he was a very patient sufferer and was never heard to complain or speak unkindly to anyone, but was always thankful for every little kindness shown him. Mr. Coon never married. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. John Kenyon of Correctionville and Mrs. Thomas Clark of Cherokee, also a number of nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death a number of years ago by his parents, five sisters and one brother. Funeral services were held at the Wilson-Hull Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, July 31. The services were conducted by Rev. Coad Batho of Holstein. Mrs. Ed Robinson sang "Rock of Ages" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" with Mrs. Thelma Frost at the piano. Mrs. Wayne Camarigg, Mrs. Glen Camarigg and Mrs. Alex Thompson had charge of flowers. The pallbearers were Orville Bentley, Albert Kraft, Bob Rowse, Andy Trimble, Roy Stines and Charles Casey. Burial was made in the Correctionville Cemetery.
OBITUARY, Correctionville News, 20 May 1920: The death of Mr. George Coon occurred at 10 o'clock Monday evening following an illness of several months. Mr. Coon was born in Wisconsin in the year of 1863. He died at Correctionville May 17, 1920, his age at the time of his death being 56 years, 9 months and 20 days. He is a member of the Evangelical church, of which he was a good and faithful worker. He was kind and loving to all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his death, one brother and five sisters, Mr. Reese Coon, Mrs. John Kenyon, Mrs. William Pilkerton, Mrs. Sarah Patterson of Correctionville, Mrs. Thomas Clark and Mrs. John Clark of Canada. He also leaves an extensive circle of friends who will remember him as being kind and generous to all.
