John Martens

    Services for John J. Martens, 93, of Nampa, who died at home Sunday, June 29, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 404 Nectarine St., Nampa.
    The Rev. Victor Schulze will officiate.  Burial will follow at the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Caldwell, under the direction of the Alsip Funeral Chapel, Nampa.
    Mr. Martens was born April 10, 1893, at Scribner, Neb., to Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Martens.  
    He later moved to Idaho and farmed in American Falls.
    He married Meta C. Fedler on Feb. 27, 1917, at American Falls.  In 1921, they moved to the Franklin community near Nampa, where they farmed until moving to another farm in the Lone Star community.
    Mrs. Martens died Jan. 16, 1973.
    He married Pearl Grove April 20, 1974, at Nampa and they made their home in the Lone Star community until 1980, when they moved into the Sunnyridge

Manor.  She died in September 1983.
    He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church.
    He loved fishing, playing horseshoes and bowling.  He was awarded the inspirational award by the Nampa Bowling Association in 1973.
    He is survived by three daughters, Bertha Rumpel and Mildred Barham, both of Meridian, and Esther Phillips of Anaheim, Calif.; two sons, Lewis Martens of Comox, B.C., Canada, and Leonard Martens of Nampa; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Windbigler of Lola, Mont.; a stepson, Benton Grove of Nampa; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren and 10 step-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by a son, two sisters, seven brothers and a grandson.
    Memorials may be made to the Sunnyridge Manor Health Care Center, 2609 Sunnybrook Drive, Nampa 83651; the Zion Lutheran Church, 404 Nectarine St., Nampa 83651; or a favorite charity.
    Friends may call at the Nampa Alsip chapel today until 9 p.m., on Wednesday until 9 p.m., on Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon, and at the church from 1 p.m. until time of services.
