Ralph 'Chet' Rice

Ralph Chester "Chet" Rice, age, 87, died Monday, March 11, 1996, at Tucson, Arizona.
    Memorial services will be held at Middleton United Methodist Church, Tuesday, March 19, 1996, at 11 a.m.
    Chet was born January 13, 1909, in a sod house, on his parents' Western Kansas Prairie homestead, in Logan County, Near Gill, Kansas.
    He was the oldest of 8 children, of Arthur S. and Hannah (Inman) Rice.
    In the spring of 1912, Chet's parents, sold their homestead and took their little family - Chet, Ellen and Katherine and journeyed by covered wagon to Lucas, Kansas.  It took 8 days to travel 200 miles.
    In October of 1929, they returned to Western Kansas, Chet and his dad built a big sod house, which is now featured in the book True Sod.
    On July 27, 1936, Chet married Maxine Vaughn and to this union 4 children were born - Raymond, Lyndon, Loren and Lyla.  They lived in Western Kansas, Colorado Springs, Colo., Peyton, Colo., and Caldwell, Idaho.
    Chet worked at Burns Chevy Garage, Simplot, Toft Machine Shop and Carnation here in Idaho.
    Later  Chet and Maxine divorced.
    Chet married Shirley Sandifer, May 5, 1962.
    Upon his retirement from Carnation in 1972 they moved to Rye, Colorado, then in 1987 Chet and Shirley moved to Tucson, Ariz.
    Shirley passed away Nov. 6, 1989, and Chet continued to live with his son Loren and daughter-in-law Ronda.
    Chet enjoyed living in Arizona and he loved to travel.  He enjoyed visiting his children and fixing their homes.  He was always doing for others.
    He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
    Chet is survived by 3 sons and 1 daughter, Raymond Rice Canon City, Colorado, Lyndon and Joan Rice, Woodland Park, Colorado, Loren and Ronda Rice, Tucson, Arizona, Lyla and Bill  Lancaster, Canon City, Colorado; 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; six sisters and 1 brother, Ellen Ahrene, Plattsmouth, Nebraska, Katherine Drause, Limon, Colorado, Pansy Downtain, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Dorothy Horton, Goodland, Kansas, Alberta Hayden, Goodland, Kansas, Florence Wills, Del Norte, Colorado, Joseph (Jiggs) Rice, Middleton, Idaho.
