James was born February 28, 1911 in Homedale, Idaho to
Grover and Elsie (Largent) DeCoursey. He spent his early years
in Homedale and Nampa and graduated from Nampa High School. He
had a lifelong love of music and in 1934, he traveled with the
Kryl Symphony from Chicago throughout the U.S. and Canada. He
received a scholarship from the University of Oregon to study
violin and graduated in 1939. He also attended College of
Idaho in Caldwell and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music.
He played in the Boise Symphony for many years where he also
served as assistant concert master. He also traveled with the
Grande Ronde Symphony to different parts of Europe and
James married Dora Olson on December 21, 1941 in Seattle,
Washington. They made their home in Nampa where they operated
a music store downtown for five years. The family moved to
Honolulu, Hawaii in 1964 where James played with the Honolulu
Symphony and taught high school band and orchestra for many
years. In 1985, James and Dora returned to Idaho where they
resumed their music business from their home where James
taught private lessons and repaired instruments until a week
before his death. He often expressed the pleasure and
fulfillment he received from sharing his love and joy of music
with his students.

Curtis, Jeanelle Thain, Joshua Casten, Lee Wilson, Tony
