Mabel DeCoursey Farner

Mabel DeCoursey Farner, 89, of Nampa, died on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at a Nampa hospital. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel, Nampa with Pastor Way Fine officiating. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Caldwell.
She was born Sept. 21, 1912, in the Franklin Community, north of Nampa, the younger of two children to Thomas M. and Mae (Jackson) DeCoursey.
Mabel had an abundance of fond memories of her childhood and youth in the Franklin Community, school, and church, where lifelong friendships were formed. She and her sister, Hazel, described their childhood as one of security from loving parents.
She graduated from Nampa High School in 1930. On Dec. 31, 1930, Mabel married Virgil Farner, her husband of 71 years. They farmed at Melba from 1931 through 1940 where they were active in the Melba Friends Church. In the fall of 1940 they purchased their farm in the Lakeview Community, where they have lived since.
Mabel was active in the Lakeview Grange, Sunday School, and the Friendly Neighbors Club. Prompted by the 50th anniversary of this club, she researched, wrote, and published her book, "Yesteryears in Lakeview," a history of the community and a task she loved.
She also loved family history and compiled extensive genealogies of both the DeCoursey and Farner families. They have been affiliated with Memorial Park Baptist Church in Caldwell. She was a loving wife, mother and Nana and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband, Virgil; three children and their spouses, Ken and Phyllis Farner , the Dalles, Ore., Norman and Virginia Higer, Caldwell, and Tom and Sherrie Farner, Caldwell; 10 grandchildren, Ramona Farner Harwood, Lakeside, MT, Nancy Farner, Keizer, OR, Dan Farner, Mulino, OR, James Farner, Sherwood, OR, Debbie Higer Hamilton, Nampa, Tammy Higer Gabica, Middleton, Scott Higer, Nampa, Kirby Farner, Boise, Brad Farner, Middleton, Amanda Farner Gordon, Nampa; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Hazel Chitwood.
Friends may call at Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel from 4 to 7 tonight.
Memorials may be made in her memory to the Memorial Park Baptist Church, 1219 S. Kimball, Caldwell, ID 83605.
