Leah Smith Dies

Age of 96


     The death Sunday morning of Mrs. Leah A. Smith, removed another member from the list of Caldwell pioneer residents.  Mrs. Smith, who would have been 96 years old on June 7, died at the family home, 1602 Arlington street.  Her father and husband each served in the Civil war from 1861 to 1864, her son, Seaver and grandson Clyde Rowland, served in World War I.
     Leah Ann Cardwell was born in Hancock County, Indiana, June 7, 1946.  She was married to William Wilson Smith in Johnson county, Iowa, on November 19, 1866.  After several years residence in Iowa, the family moved to Rexford, Kas.  Mr. Smith and a son William, died at Rexford in 1902.
     In 1905 Mrs. Smith and three sons came from Kansas to Idaho.  They purchased a farm in the Maple Grove community and continued to live there until 1927 when Mrs. Smith moved to her present home in Caldwell.  She was a member of the Eastern Star and Pythian Sisters at Colby, Kas., and the Women's Relief Corps at Caldwell.  Until recently, Mrs. Smith kept in close touch with current events and war news.  She loved to piece quilts, tend her flowers and keep house for her son, Bruce, with whom she shared the family home.
     Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Geneva Rowland;  five sons, George, Jess, Robert, Seaver and Bruce, all of Caldwell;  two brothers, N. D. Cardwell, Republic, Kan.;  U. J. Caldwell (sic-Cardwell), who resides in Southern California;  eight grand-children and eight great grandchildren.  Three grandsons are now in the United States Army.  One daughter died in infancy.
     The body is at the Peckham chapel where services will be held Tuesday at 4 p. m.  Dr. H. H. Hayman of the College of Idaho will officiate and interment will be in Canyon Hill cemetery.
