Gooding County

  • Tate, Ernest, Cpl, Squad leader in Machine Gun Co. G, 358th Infantry Regt. 90th Div. serial no. 2220945. Took part in engagements of the American Expeditionary Forces against the Germans at  Chateau-Thierry July 21. 1918 as well as the Great St-Miehiel Salient and at Pont-A-Mousson on the Moselle in France on September 12, 1918.
    The Germans began shelling all units when the attack began and one of the artillery shells hit my Fathers squad and all members were killed except my Father and one other member. My Father was severely wounded both legs were broken and shrapnel was throughout his body. He was evacuated to a field hospital in Savina, France and then by Hospital Ship to the U. S. and sent to an Army Hospital in Ft. Sheridan, Ill. for rehabilitation.
    He was awarded the Purple Heart, for wounds received in action as well as the WWI Victory medal with the Meuse-Argonne and the St. Mihiel battle clasps. He also had been awarded the Army Expert Riflemans Badge and several battle ribbons. He was also eligible to wear the chevron of a wounded veteran on the sleeve of  his tunic.
    His wounds bothered him for the rest of his life.
