"William Wayne Garmon 1913-2002
William Wayne Garmon, 89, of Pekin and formerly of Chandlerville died
Saturday morning, Sept. 21, 2002, at his residence.
He was born April 4, 1913, in Edmonton, Ky., the son of William Perry
and Birdie Grisum Garmon. He married Mary Catherine Cox in1932, in Cass County and she
preceded him in death in 1939. He later married Nora Adeline Cox in 1945, in East Peoria
and they later divorced.
He is survived by five sons, William Ralph (wife, Marilyn) of Ashland,
David Wayne of Pekin, Ronald F. (wife, Patricia) of Pekin, Larry D. (wife, Brenda) of
Tremont, and Terry L., (wife, Dorothy) of Pekin; one daughter, Wanda (husband, Henry)
Young of Pekin; one step-son, Roy L. (wife, Virginia) Ewen of Pekin; 14 grandchildren; 6
step grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son,
Donald; one step son, James R. Ewen; 2 grandsons; 2 brothers; and one sister.
Mr. Garmon owned and operated Wayne's Barber Shop in Pekin since 1952.
He previously had a barber shop in East Peoria, worked for Caterpillar, Inc. in East
Peoria, and farmed in Cass County.
Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Massie-Buchanan
Funeral Home in Virginia. Family will meet friends from 4-6 p.m.Wednesday at the funeral
home. Private burial will be held later at the Garner Chapel Cemetery, north of
Philadelphia.

"Rev. Greenberry Garner.
Rev. Greenberry Garner was born in Clark county, Ind., March 11, 1816,
and died in Ashland, Ill., Nov. 24, 1887. He had attended the public Thanksgiving service
on that day in his usual health, and had assisted by making a short address. While sitting
in his chair after dinner, engaged in conversation, his head suddenly dropped on the back
of the chair and he was gone. Bro. Garner was converted in his 18th year inMorgan county,
Ill., Aug. 27, 1834. He was received on trial in the Illinois Conference of the M.E.
Church in 1847, and traveled the following charges in the order named, viz.: Waterloo,
Salem, Pulaski, Havana, Fancy Creek, Clinton, Mt. Pleasant, Danville, Georgetown, Camargo,
Sangamon, Leroy, Mount Pulaski, Dewitt, Camden, Rushville, Littleton, Labuda, New
Hartford, Chandlerville, Ashland and North Jacksonville. He returned to Ashland again as a
superannuate. Bro. Garner married Miss Mary
J. Redman, March 31, 1836, who survives him, and was his companion in all his
vicissitudes and the sharer in all his burdens. Ten children were born unto them, of whom
seven are still living. Bro. Garner's parents and grandparents on both sides, and all his
brothers and sisters, of whom there were ten, were active, useful Christians and members
of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was ordained elder by Bishop Waugh, in Jacksonville,
Ill., Sept. 21, 1851. We have not the date for his ordination as deacon--his certificate
having been burned with his house some years ago. Although surrounded with Christian
influences in his youth, he nevertheless had a hard struggle to surrender his sinful
pleasures and prospects. But he succeeded. And at the trumpet call of the gospel sounded
by his own father at the Robinson camp ground near Jacksonville, Ill., he enlisted in
Immanuel's army. In 1847 he entered the itinerancy. Great success attended the labors of
Bro. Garner. It is probably that not less than four or five thousand souls were converted
through his instrumentslity during his long and laborious ministry. Bro. Garner was as a
father to very many young men upon entering the ministry. In earlier times they were sent
out two and two, a senior and a junior preacher--that the younger preacher might learn of
the senior. Taking the young men who have traveled with him and received their first
lessons in the practical work of the itinerancy, and those of his converts who have
entered into the ministry and done good service for
the Lord--and very few of the fathers in the Church will have more stars in their crown of
rejoicing in this direction. If we look at the situation now, and compare it with the
situation then when he first drove into Waterloo, and could scarcely find a place of
shelter. We shall be amazed and instructed and ask one another, Behold what wonders God
hath wrought. A. Sloan."

Death of Conrad Gebhards
End Came At Ripe Old Age of Seventy Years
Was a Native of Germany and Came to America in 1866 -Funeral Services Held Monday
Conrad Gebhards, a prominent and highly respected resident of
this community passed away at his home east of Chandlerville Saturday morning at 11:30
o'clock, after an illness of several days. The deceased was born in Horsten Amt/
Willensend, Germany; May 6, 1839 and had attained the ripe old age of 70 years, three
months and one day at
the time of death. He remained in his native country until he was 33 years of age,
when he came to the United States in 1866 settling at Petersburg, Illinois.
On November 17, 1870 he was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Ray,
a resident of this community.
To them were born nine children five of whom, three sons and two
daughters preceded him in death. With the mother, there remains four sons to mournhis
departure, namely Otto, Alvin, William, and Conrad.
He was a member of the German Lutheran Church and was always a cheerful
giver for the support of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. He was of a genial disposition, and
always saw the sunny side of life, having a cheerful word for all with whom hecame in
contact. Not only will he be greatly missedin his home but in the community as well for as
a neighbor none came to him for help and turned away empty.
The funeral services were held in the Mt. Olive Baptist church Monday
morning. Rev. Frank Day officiated. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery of that
church.
Note: The obituary contains his picture. Also note that Conrad Gebhards and Folkert Gerdes
married sisters (Caroline and Mary E. Ray) and had neighboring farms east of
Chandlerville, Illinois.

Ralph D. 'Fritz' Genseal - 1926-2003 - Beardstown
Ralph D. "Fritz" Genseal, 77, of rural Beardstown, died
Thursday evening, April 17, 2003, at his residence.
He was born Feb., 26, 1926, in Beardstown, the son of Joseph R. and
Anna M. Smith Genseal. He married Catherine V. "Kate" Miller Oct. 5, 1947, in
Beardstown, and she preceded him in death April 15, 1983. He later married Shirley Stith
Schaeffer Aug. 18, 1984, in Beardstown, and she survives.
He is also survived by one son, Steve (wife, Janet) of Chilicothe; one
stepson, Allen (wife, Sharon) Schaeffer of Beardstown; four step-daughters, JoAnn
(husband, Frank) Tackett of Pikeville, Ky., Nancy (husband, Paul) Fisher of Louisville,
Ky., and Marilyn and Carolyn Schaeffer, both of Beardstown; two grandsons; seven
stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers Norman "Pete"
(wife, Alice) of Beardstown and Richard (wife, Doreen) of Logandale, Nev.; and three
sisters, Jean (husband, Dick) Tyson and Kay Genseal, both of Beardstown, and Joan
(husband, Bernard) McFetridge of St. Augustine. He was preceded in death by one sister,
Patricia Genseal; and two brothers Jack and Joseph Genseal.
Mr. Genseal attended Swan Lake School in the South Beardstown Drainage
District and graduated from Beardstown High School in 1943.
He served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Navy Reserves for 12 years. He served in World War II
from May 1943 until March 1947. He served on
various vessels including the S.S. Typhoon, USS Cowpens, USS Murrelet and the USS Sprig.
He received campaign ribbons for American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific (four stars), World War
II Victory and Good Conduct. He re-entered the U.S. Navy as a reservist and served from
1950-1951 in the Korean Conflict where he received the American Defense medal and the
Korean Action medal.
Upon returning home from military service, Mr. Genseal was employed as
a miller at the Beardstown Mill for 12 years until the mill was closed. He then worked for
two years for John Dutch in Beardstown where he laid telephone cable for Bell Telephone
and from 1967 until retirement in 1987 for Oscar Mayer in Beardstown., He was currently
employed with he maintenance department at the Beardstown High School. He was a member of
the American Legion Post 605 in Beardstown and a lifetime member of the Guthrie-Pierce VFW
Post 1239 in Beardstown. He faithfully attended First United Methodist Church in
Beardstown. He enjoyed gardening with his brother-in-law and friend, Glenn Miller, raising
watermelon and strawberries and enjoyed sharing their produce with family and friends.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Untied
Methodist Church in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Family will meet
friends from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Sager Funreal Home in Beardstown. Memorials are suggested
to Cass County Visiting Nurses or Cass/Schuyler Area Hospice.

Mrs. Rosendahl Dead After Week's Illness At Residence Here
Mrs. Margareta Rosendahl, wife of Reak Rosendahl and a resident of this
city most of her long life, died at her home here Friday evening June 26, following a
weeks illness. She was 80 years old.
Born May 24, 1862 at Chandlerville, she was the daughter of Benter and
Gesche Gebhards. On March 10, 1881, she was married to Reak Rosendahl, and came to this
community where she spent the remainder of her life. To them were born seven children, of
whom five preceded her in death. Surviving are her husband, two daughters, Mrs. H.B. Harms
and Mrs. Selma Reinders of this city, and three grandchildren.
During her girlhood, Mrs. Rosendahl was confirmed into the membership
of St. Pauls church. She was a charter member of the Ladies Aid and was the first
president of the organization, an office which she held for many years.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 Monday afternoon at St. Pauls,
conducted by Rev Christopher Boland and burial was in Rose Hill, pallbears being Albert
Kasten, Harry Gebhards, Wm. Gebhards, Ben Gebhards, Conrad Gebhards and Alvin Gebhards.

Was a retired worker for Burlington
A lingering illness of nearly a years duration proved fatal at 10:30, this morning in
Schmitt Memorial Hospital here for Henry Geils 88 years old, and a retired Burlington
worker. He had been to the hospital since last Sunday. The body was removed to the Cline
Funeral Home to be prepared for burial. Born Jan.14, 1853 in St.Louis,Mo., Mr.Geils acted
as a street car motorman in that city as a young man before coming here to take a position
in the Burlington roundhouse. He retired in 1922.
Lived here for years
Mr.Geils made his home at 1004 Jackson Street for many years and after the death of his
second Wife in 1920 lived there with his daughter, Mrs. Randolph Loughary and
family. Besides Mrs.Loughary he is survived by his other daughters,Mrs. C. Heimel of
Galesburg and Mrs. Roy Becker of Watervliet, New York; Mrs.Leonard Bridgeman of
Arenzville, the later being a child of the first marriage;and by 16 grandchildren
and four great granchildren. Also surviving are his step children William Strohecker of
near this city and Mrs J.F. Musch of this city.
Family notes: John Henry Geils was the brother to Maria Geils-Nolden;he was the son of
Albert Geils and Maria Loheide. His children with Lydia Kugel-Strohecker were Anita
Geils who married Roy Henry Becker; Frances M. Geils who married Randolph Jesse (Randy)
Loughary;Viola Geils who married Henry Kloker; Walter Geils who married Mildred O'Hara,
Ethel Geils who married Charles C. Heimel, and Albert Geils.
Step Children included: William Strohecker, and Phylliss Strohecker who married John
Musch;and Mrs. Leonard Bridgeman.
John Henrys' first wife was Minnie Schneider, she died in 1889. John Henry married Lydia
Kugel-Strohecker Oct.25, 1886

Beulah Anderson of Virginia Dies Monday
Virginia - Mrs. beulah A. Anderson 60 of 241 S. Cass St., Virginia died
unexpectedly at 12:30 p.m. Monday at her residence.
She was born Sept. 26, 1910 in Cass County, the daughter of William and
Rosa Lewis Gerdes.
She is survived by her husband, Howard, and children, Richard of
Springfield; Charlene, Lyle, Andrew, Le Roy, George, and Mrs. Joan Fremgen all of
Virginia; and Mrs. Mary Gregory of Jacksonville.
Three step-children, W.E. of Champaign, Robert of Chicago, and Mrs.
Helen Smith of Blue Eye, Mo. survive.
There are 15 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Also surviving are a brother, Alva Gerdes of Chandlerville and a sister
Mrs. Bessie Smith of Bath.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Massie Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with
the Rev. William J. Boston officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.

Obituary for Folkert W. Gerdes. The obituary says Faulker but it
was Folkert W. Gerdes. He often went by Folker leaving the final t off his name. The
Oltmans Fehr mentioned as the birthplace is Oltmannsfehn. Amt. means county. The birthdate
is off as church records in Germany have him born Oct. 20, 1833. The obituary says he had
no relatives in this country. He did have some cousins including his first cousin Gerd G.
Gerdes and his family of Menard Co. Gerd and Folkert Gerdes came together to America
on the ship Gerhard in 1857.

Father Time
We were pained as well as shocked last Tuesday to learn that Father
Time with his resentless scythe, had cut off one of our good and true men, a prominent
farmer and county official, Mr. Faulker W, Gerdes. Deceased had been ill but a few days
and no one thought for an instant that he was so grievously ill. He had been ailing all
winter, but two weeks ago, was able to go to Virginia to attend court. On coming home he
took worse, and by Tuesday, at 3 p.m., February 26, he was a corpse. His ailment was
congestion of the bowels. Just before his death he apparently dropped off to sleep, as the
family thought, but Mr. P. W. Richard going into the room at the time told them he was
dying. His funeral took place yesterday at 2 p.m., Rev. Martin, our Methodist minister
officiating.
Mr. Gerdes was well known in this county having served the people
successfully as county commissioner since the fall of 1882, besides being school director
of District 5, Township 19, and Range 9, off and on, for a number of years, and has always
been known as an honest, straightforward man in all his actions, and his loss is a sad
blow to his family, his neighbors, and the county.
He was born in Oltmann Fehn, Amt. Strickhausen, Ost Friesland, Germany
in 1836, and came to this country a poor boy, in 1857. He worked about five years for
Joshua Morris, and in 1863 was married to Miss Mary Ray, daughter of Philander Ray. He
then purchased a farm and went to housekeeping. Four children have been the fruits of this
marriage, two boys, and two girls, the youngest being 11 years old, and the oldest 18.
Deceased has no relatives in this country but has a brother and sister in the old country.
During his life he has accumulated considerable property, and leaving his family in good
circumstances.

W.R. Gerdes Laid to Rest Sunday
William R. Gerdes, son of Folker W. and Mary Ray Gerdes,
was born on the farm where he lived at the time of his death, December 25, 1869 and
departed this life on April 13, 1934 at the age of 64 years, 3 months, and 18
days.
Mr. Gerdes spent his boyhood days in this community and as
a young man was very industrious, helping his parents on the farm. On august 11,
1893 he was united in marriage to Miss Rosa Lewis by the Rev. C. Sloan and to
this union were born five children, namely, Mrs. Cleve Emmons, Jacksonville, Ill.,
Ernest and Alva of Chandlerville, Mrs. Wallace Smith of Bath and Mrs. Howard
Anderson of Virginia. These with the wife and companion, one brother, Alonzo Gerdes
of this city, and six grand-children are left to mourn his passing, besides a host
of very dear friends.
Mr. Gerdes having spent his entire life in Cass County had
a wide circle of friends by whom he was always held in high esteem as a business
man and a neighbor. He was quiet and unassuming but always dependable no
matter when called upon.
Having felt the need of a Savior he made a confession in
Christ and in May 1907 he was baptised into the Mt. Olive Baptist church and in
September 1914 he was ordained as a decan to this body, proving himself to be of
much value to his church and community.
Funeral services were held at the Mt. Olive Baptist church
Sunday April 15, 1934 at 2:30 pm, Rev. W. A. Ogden of Oakford officiating.
The pallbearers were A. J. Samuell, Wm. Severns,
Henry Schadd, Henry Braurer, Will Blair, and Leslie Collins.
The many beautiful floral offerings were in charge of
Misses Pauline Gebhards, Wilma Ismael, Berdine Ishmael, Lois and Shirley Brauer, and
Margaret Lynn.
Special music was furnished by Raymond and arthur
Sarff, Mrs. John Johnson, and Mrs Grace Blessman with Miss Edna Caywood at the
piano.
Interment was made in the Mt. Olive cemetery with the
Lintner Funeral Home in charge.
Our dear father he has left us
And his loss we deeply feel
But it is God that has bereft us,
He will all our sorrows heal
As time passed by it changed our plans;
For the reaper came with his mighty hand;
And claimed the one we loved so Grand.

Beulah M. Ginder, 72, of rural Arenzville
died Wednesday morning, February 20, 2002 at Passavant Area Hospital. She was born
September 10, 1929 in Morgan County the daughter of Arthur J.W. and Gladys Hamilton
Wohlers. She married Lloyd Ginder on August 21, 1955 at Salem Lutheran Church in
Jacksonville and he survives.
She is also survived by two sons, Carl (wife, Janet) Ginder and Rex Ginder
both of Jacksonville; one daughter, Lisa (husband, Tim) Hammond of Peoria; 2
step-grandchildren; three brothers, Melvin (wife, Naomi) Wohlers of Jacksonville, Ralph
(wife, Thelma) Wohlers of Franklin and Gerald (wife, Cheryl) Wohlers of Geneva; six
sisters, Mary (husband, Paul) Dufelmeier of Arenzville, Lenora (husband, Howard) Lovekamp
of Lockport, Roberta Wohlers of Jacksonville, Norma (husband, Gerald) Michael of
Jacksonville, Betty (husband, Robert) Essex of Phoenix, Arizona and Thelma (husband,
Jerry) Barrington of Springfield. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Owen Wohlers
and Leonard Wohlers and one sister, Ruth Wohlers.
Mrs. Ginder graduated from Jacksonville High School and Hardin-Brown Business
College. She had been a secretary at Lukeman's and Jacksonville School District #117. She
was also a homemaker who helped extensively on the family farm.
She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and a life member of Alpha Ioata
Sorority and had served on the election board and Arcadia Cemetery Board.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2002 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Arcadia Cemetery. Friends may call after 12 noon on Friday with the family to meet friends from 5-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Salem Lutheran Church.

Velma Ruppel Gish - 1913-2003 - Beardstown
Velma Ruppel Gish, 87, of Beardstown, died Monday evening, June 16,
2003, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
She was born July 30, 1915, in Beardstown, the daughter of Edward and Bessie
Lee Davis Hiles. She married Russell Ruppel Jan. 2, 1935, in Kankakee, and he preceded her
in death July 29, 1962. She was presently married to Donald E. Gish for 35 years and he
survives in Beardstown.
She is also survived by one son, Ray, (wife, Trinidad) Ruppel of Hazelwood,
Mo.; one daughter, Rosanne Saletta of Mount Shasta, Calif.; one stepson, Byron
"Barney" (wife, Nancy) Gish of Beardstown; six grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; and three brothers Edward Hiles and Robert Hiles, both of Peoria, and
Byron (wife, Mary) Hiles of Galesburg. She was preceded in death by one sister, Marie
Volkmar; and two brothers, Clarence Hiles and Elmer Hiles.
Mrs. Gish graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1933. She was
a faithful and devoted member of the First United Methodist Church in Beardstown where she
previously taught Sunday school for 47 years, sang in the church choir, and managed the
choir music and robes. She was a member of United Methodist Women and Circle 6 within the
church. She was quite artistic and talented in many ways. She loved to paint and she
formerly taught painting lessons in the basement of her home. She greatly enjoyed music,
especially playing the organ and writing her own songs. As an accomplished seamstress, she
made all the robes many years ago for the Live Nativity that is presented annually at the
church. She also expressed herself through writing. Mrs. Gish wrote several poems and for
numerous years wrote "Typewriter Trivia" for the Beardstown newspaper --
The Illinoian Star. In 1979, she was selected as the First Lady of
Beardstown during the Beardstown Sesquicentennial. She truly loved her family and she will
be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist
Church in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4
p.m. Thursday at the Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown with the family meeting friends from
5-7 p.m. Her remains will be taken to the church one hour prior to the funeral service on
Friday. Memorials have been suggested to the Cass/Schuyler Area Hospice. Condolences may

James O. Godwin - 1943-2003 - Ashland
James O. "Jim" Godwin, 59, of
Ashland, died Monday evening, Aug. 18, 2003 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
He was born Dec. 26, 1943 in Springfield, the son of Winnona Boner
Godwin. He married Nancy A. Nicloy on Aug. 7, 1971 in Quincy, and she survives.
He is also survived by two daughters, Susan M. Godwin of Salt Lake
City, and Sara C. Godwin of Urbana; one uncle and one aunt. He was preceded in death by
his mother.
Mr. Godwin was a graduate of Feitshans High School in Springfield and
attended Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee. He served with the US Navy during the
Vietnam War aboard the USS Braine. He was a self employed computer consultant. An avid
cyclist, he enjoyed bicycle racing and once qualified for the Mexico City Olympics. He was
a life member of VFW Post 755 in Springfield. He was an accomplished artist and
photographer and enjoyed woodworking, computer surfing, and sharing coffee and stories
with his friends.
Graveside military rites will be conducted at noon Thursday at Camp
Butler National Cemetery in Springfield. Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the
Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Ashland. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Central
Prairie Chapter of American Red Cross, 700 N. Prairie St., Jacksonville, IL 62650.

Carl GREEN of the city passed away Wednesday at Culbertson Memorial Hospital where he had
been admitted on Sunday.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 pm. at the Roby Funeral Chapel with the Rev.
Ronald C. Colton officiating. Burial will be in Messerer Cemetery near Pleasant View.
Mr. GREEN was born on Feb. 15, 1889, son of George and Ella GARRISON GREEN. He married
Julia WARDELL on June 14, 1910. She passed away on Oct 28, 1959. He was a retired
carpenter and a member of the Free Methodist church in Rushville.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth of Dixon, and Russell of Wickenberg, Arizona; two
daughters, Mrs. Mildred TYSON and Mrs. Mary TUTT, both of Canton; one sister, Mrs. Addie
ABBOTT of this city; 11 grandchildren, One son, Kermit and three brothers are deceased.
Family will meet with friends after 7 PM. Thursday evening at the Roby Funeral Home.

Mrs. Carl GREEN, 67, Dies Here Early Wednesday
Mrs. Julia WARDELL GREEN, 67, wife of Carl GREEN, a life long resident of Rushville, died
Wednesday morning at 5 o'clock in her home in Rushville.
Mrs. GREEN was born October 5, 1892 the daughter of William and Judith INGLES WARDELL. She
was married to Carl GREEN June 14, 1910. To this union five children were born, James
Kermit born in 1911 passed away at the age of 25 years. Kenneth Ralph of Dixon; Mildred
Evelyn TYSON and Mary Elizabeth TUTT both of Canton and Paul Russell GREEN of Wickenburg,
Arizona.
Other survivors are 11 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two brothers, Tom WARDELL
of Galesburg and James WARDELL of Camden and two sisters, Mrs. Bertha DAVIS of Astoria and
Mrs. Gusta GREEN of Beardstown.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Hardy-Roby Funeral Home.

Capt. James R. GREEN, Comp. G, 18th Ill. Inf. died at 6 a.m. at Soldiers and Sailors Home in Quincy, Ill. He was 73 years, 6 mo. old. He is survived by a son Edward, one brother William in Arenzville and 6 sisters. He will be buried at Oak Ridge cemetery, Springfield.

Decatur GREENWOOD, one of the pioneer settlers of Cass County and who
hewed
logs and assisted in erecting the first home in Chandlerville, passed away
at the home of his son Frank at Philadelphia Tuesday morning after a
lingering illness.
The deceased was born January 5, 1821, and was 86 years, 10 months and 7
days of age at the time of his death. With his wife and four children he
departed from West Virginia and came to Cass County, where he resided
continously until death. He was a man of great strength and was ably
fitted to be one of those brave and hardy men who cleared the path for
civilization and made our state with its great farming lands and businesses
possible. His wife and companion died eight years ago. He was the father
of sixteen children, eleven of whom, with 120 grand children and twelve
great grand children are living. The children are K. A., William and Samuel
of Virginia; Frank of Philadelphia; Richard of Litterberry; Joseph of
Springfield; Mrs. Flora Friedrich of Kirkland; Mrs Emma Barrett of Chicago;
Mrs. John Miller and Mrs. Margaret Nester of Virginia and Mrs. Zella Capper
of this city.
The remains were brought to this place yesterday morning and the funeral
service held at the Christian church at 11:00 o'clock. Rev. L. O. Lehman,
pastor of the Havana Christian church officiating. Interment followed at
the village cemetery. The last sad rites were attended by a large concourse
of friends and relatives from all the neighboring towns and there were many
beautiful floral offerings.

Pauline I. Griffie - 1922-2003 - Chandlerville
Pauline I. Griffie, 81, of rural Chandlerville, died Monday afternoon,
Sept. 8, 2003, at Mason District Hospital in Havana.
She was born Jan. 22, 1922, in Mason County, the daughter of Oliver P.
and Margaret Mae Gunterman McDaniel. She married Paul
Griffie on May 4, 1940, in Palmyra, Mo., and he preceded her in death Oct. 31, 1978.
She is survived by one son, James (wife, Darlene) of Chandlerville; one
daughter, Mary (husband, Eugene) Eilers of Chandlerville; four grandchildren, Michael
Griffie (wife, Roberta) of Chandlerville, Lori Ann Eilers of Jacksonville, Nichole
Rhinehart (husband, Allan) of Chandlerville and Bradley Eilers (wife, Christi) of Ashland;
five great-grandchildren; one brother, Roy McDaniel of Mineral Wells, Texas; two sisters,
Cora Force of Virginia and Maudie Collins of Chandlerville; and several nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jessie McDaniel, Vernon McDaniel,
and in infancy Orlan Dwayne McDaniel; and four sisters, Ethel Neely, Edna Davis, Eunice
Hodgson and Ollie Force.
Mrs. Griffie was a homemaker and member of Bethel Baptist Church in
Mason County.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethel Baptist Church
north of Chandlerville, with burial at Bethel Cemetery, adjacent to the church. Friends
may call after 4 p.m. today at the Lintner-Buchanan Funeral Home in Chandlerville, where

Richard E. Guffey, 70 years, of
Ashland, IL died Tuesday morning, April 1, 2003 at his residence.
He was born August 9, 1932 in rural Ashland, the son of General A. and
Grace Geneva Ratliff Guffey. He married Pat Harris May 4, 1979 in Springfield, and she
survives.
He is also survived by a son, Richard A. of Ashland; a step-son, Larry
Leonhard of Ashland; two step grandchildren, Michael and Lindsey Leonhard; two brothers,
Paul A. (wife, Ora) of Ashland and Lee E. (wife, Anna) of Jacksonville; and several nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a step son, John Leonhard;
and 3 brothers, Hubert Guffey and in infancy, Robert and Floyd Guffey.
Mr. Guffey served with the US Army from 1950-1952 and began his career
as an electrician with Ashland Electric Company. He later joined Springfield Local #193
IBEW working as a union electrician until his retirement in 1986. He enjoyed trading and
restoring old cars and was well known for his wonderful sense of humor.
Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Ashland
Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Deutsch officiating. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m.
Wednesday at the Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Ashland. Memorials are suggested to the
