WILLARD HAGEMAN, 61, DIES; FUNERAL TO BE SUNDAY
Willard I. Hageman, 61, retired employee of Beardstown Mills, died at 5 a.m. at his home,
615 East 4th St. He had been under the care of a
physician for quite awhile.
The body was removed to Cline's Funeral Home where friends may call from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the First Christian Church
with the Rev. Sweitzer in charge. Burial will be in City Cemetery.
Mr. Hageman was a native of Beardstown. He was born here Sept. 17, 1900, son of Edward
Freeman and Lulu Belle Irwin Hageman, both now deceased. He was married to Helen V. Orr
who died June 1, 1858. He is survived by two sons, Orville and Jack Hageman, both of
Beardstown; six grandchildren; five brothers, Edward (Doodle) Hageman, Miller Hageman,
John Hageman, Bob Hageman and Paul Hageman, all of Beardstown; and two sisters, Mrs. Verna
Fleer of Quincy and Mrs. Virginia (Jennie) Draper of Detroit, Mich.

MRS. WILLARD HAGEMAN, 45, DIES AT LOCAL HOSPITAL
Mrs. Helen Hageman, 45, wife of Willard Hageman, 310 Canal street, died at 3 o'clock this
morning at Schmitt Memorial hospital, where she ahd been a patient the past six weeks. She
was ill the last three years.
Mrs. Hageman was born at Chapin, February 14, 1913, the daughter of Benjamin and Frona
Orr, both of whom are now deceased. She was married to Willard Hageman May 7, 1932 at
Virginia. They resided in this city and had three sons and a daughter. One son and one
daughter are deceased. Surviving are two sons, Jack and Orville Hageman of Beardstown, two
grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Fred Graham of Beardstown and Mrs. Irene Decker of
Jacksonville, two brothers, Walter Orr of Macomb and Marion Orr of Beardstown.
The body was taken to Cline's funeral home. Friends may call from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday
at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cline's
Funeral home.

LOCAL CHILD DIES; FUNERAL TOMORROW
Sandra Jo Hageman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Hageman of this city, died at 7
o'clock last night at her home. She was 19 days of age.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Cline Funeral
Home. The Rev. Alfred E. Cole will be in charge. Burial will
be in the City cemetery.
The decedent is survived by her parents and two brothers.

INFANT SON OF MR. AND MR. W.I. HAGEMAN DIES OF PNEUMONIA
Willard Hageman, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. W.I. Hageman died at his home at 1116 South
Wall street at 1:55 this morning following an attack of bronchial pneumonia.
The decedent was born December 3, 1934, and was 1 month and 15 days of age at the time of
his death. Besides his parents he is survived by one brother, Jack Willard and his
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E.F. Hageman and Ben Orr.

MRS. HAGEMAN, 82, DIES AT PARK VIEW NURSING HOME HERE
Mrs. Lulu B. Hageman, 82, widow of Edward F. Hageman, died at 5:35 p.m. yesterday
afternoon at the Park View Nursing home where she had been a patient since August 16. She
was a patient in Schmitt Memorial hospital five days before entering the nursing home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at Cline's Funeral home with
the Rev. Boyd Rudd, pastor of the Methodist church,
officiating. Burial will be in the city cemetery. The family will receive friends from
7:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hageman was born January 10, 1875 at Beardstown, the daughter of Alexander and
Margaret Irwin. She was a pupil in the fifth grade when
Central school was built and often recalled how all the school children in the city wrote
their names on slips of paper which were placed in the
cornerstone at the time of the dedication of the school. She was married to Edward F.
Hageman, November 29, 1895 in Beardstown. The family home was at 511 East Fifth street,
and Mr. Hageman had a 50-year service record with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy
railroad. He died in
1948. A daughter, Marcella, who died in California in 1954, also preceded her mother in
death. Surviving are eight children, Mrs. Verna Fleer of Quincy, Willard, Jess, Miller,
John, Paul and Robert Hageman, all of Beardstown and Mrs. Janis Draper of Lincoln Park,
Mich. There are 21 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

ED HAGEMAN, 80, DIES HERE
Edward Freeman Hageman, 80, retired passenger conductor on the Chicago, Burlington and
Quincy railroad died at 3:30 o'clock yesterday morning at Schmitt Memorial hospital. He
had been in failing health for several months.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Fred I. Cline
funeral home. The Rev. E.B. Morton of the First Methodist
church will conduct the services. Friends may call between 7:30 and 9 o'clock tonight at
the funeral home.
Mr. Hageman, who retired after 45 years of service on the Burlington railroad, lived at
511 E. Fifth street. He was born February 16, 1868 in Bushnell, Ill., the son of Jesse
David and Jane Hageman. He is survived by his wife and nine children, including three
daughters, Mrs. Walter Fleer of Quincy, Mrs. John Hanlon of California, Mrs. Henry Draper,
at home, and six sons, Willard, Edward, John, Miller, Paul, and Robert, all of this city.
A sister, Mrs. Alta Goss of Good Hope, and 17 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren
also survive.

Mrs. Susan Hageman, widow of Isaac Hageman, deceased, died at the
home place in the Monroe neighborhood, Saturday last at 6 o'clock p.m. The funeral took
place Monday, from the German M.E. Church, south of Bluff Springs, the service being
conducted by Rev. J.E. Roach, of this city, and was largely attended by relatives and
friends, by whom the deceased was held in high esteem. The remains were interred at the
cemetery adjoining the church.
Mrs. Hageman was born in 1813 in the York Co., PA, and married at the age of 24 years to
Isaac Hageman, who died some 10 years ago. They came to this county in an early day and
settled in Monroe precinct. Deceased was the mother of eight children, only three of whom,
namely, Amanda, Sarah, and Adam, were living at home at the time of the death of Mrs.
Hageman, the balance of the children having established homes of their own. Deceased was a
member at the time of her death. She led a most exemplary life and has hosts of friends
who mourn her loss.

Benson B. "Ben" Hager February 8, 1914 - November 9, 2002
Benson B. "Ben" Hager, 88, of Beardstown, died Saturday
evening, November 9, 2002, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
He was born February 8, 1914 in Sangamon Valley Township near
Beardstown, the son of Clarence William and Mary "Maye" Emmerson
Harris Hager. He married Marie Wessel on January 29, 1939 in Palmyra, MO. She preceded him
in death on May 19, 2002.
Surviving are four daughters, Judith (husband Roger) Carlsen of
Frankfort, Jean (husband Richard) Piehler and Donna (husband Bob)
Hickernell, both of Rushville, and Elaine (husband Jon) Taylor of Springfield; eight
grandchildren, Brian Florey, David Piehler, Andrea Florey Tatum, Todd Taylor, Amy Crum,
Keith Taylor, Scott Taylor, and Joshua Carlsen; six great grandchildren, Erin Taylor,
Erika Taylor, Chance Taylor, Hannah Crum, Addison Crum, and Chase Piehler; one brother,
Omar Hager of Mesa, AZ; and two sisters, Betty Braden of Rudyard, MI and Margaret (husband
Harry "Brock") Brockman of Jacksonville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marie, and two
brothers Vern and Dale.
Mr. Hager attended Limbo School in the Sangamon Valley Township near
Beardstown and he graduated from Beardstown High School in the
class of 1932. He was an active member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Beardstown where he formerly served on the church council. Mr. Hager previously served on
the ASCS Board in Virginia, the Bluff Springs Elevator Board, and the Bluff Springs
Township Board. He served 35 years on the Brick School and Beardstown Boards of Education.
He was a charter member of the Beardstown Ducks Unlimited and he was a 50-year member of
the Beardstown B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1007. Mr. Hager farmed in the Sangamon River bottoms of
Cass County from 1931 until his retirement in 1985. He enjoyed playing softball and
baseball and was an avid duck hunter. Mr. Hager was lovingly devoted to his family and he
will be sadly missed.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 13, at the
First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown with the Rev.
David Natzke officiating. Burial was in the Beardstown City Cemetery.
Memorials have been suggested to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown or
Cass County Hospice.

Janet L. Hager - 1935-2003 - Ashland
Janet L. Hager, 67 years, of
Ashland, IL died Tuesday morning, April 1, 2003 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
She was born Oct. 5, 1935 in rural Virden, the daughter of Ivan
Kendrick and Lillian Green Burris. She married Richard E. "Dick" Hager April 5,
1958 in Ashland, and he preceded in death June 8, 1990.
She is survived by two sons, Rick (wife, Alicia) of Ashland and Ben
(wife, Susie), both of Ashland; five grandchildren, Adam, Christopher, Nicholas, Lexi, and
Alec Hager; one brother, Dick (wife, Martha) of Jacksonville; two sisters, Barbara
"Bobbie" (husband, Carol) Hacker of Springfield and Deanna (husband, Jim)
Hedderich of Bastrop, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by
her parents and one son, Scott K. Hager on April 4, 1999.
Mrs. Hager was a graduate of Springfield High School and was employed
by Illinois Casualty Insurance, Commodity Merchants, and Timberlake Sales, all of
Springfield. She later worked several years as church secretary for Ashland United
Methodist Church, where she had been a member for many years. She enjoyed crocheting,
reading, and antiques. She also enjoyed music and often played the piano and organ. She
collected ducks, many of which were made by her husband.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Ashland United
Methodist Church in Ashland with burial at Ashland Cemetery. Friends may call after 3:30
p.m. today at the Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Ashland, where the family will meet

Irwin Hamilton, one of Virginia's oldest citizens closed his eyes and
passed to the great beyond yesterday afternoon, at his home on west Springfield street,
after an illness of many months duration.
Deceased was born in Tyrone County, Ireland, about 84 years ago and came to America during
his early manhood, later removing to this city where he has since resided, and for the
past fifty-one years he has lived in the house where he peacefully breathed his last. Mr.
Hamilton served in the U.S. Navy in the early fifties and was a Private in the Illinois
Volunteer Calvary, Company A during the Civil War.
Decedent was married to Miss Nancy Dewey in Naugatuck, Conn,. and two boys and eight girls
were born to them. The surviving children are Mrs. J. O. Collins, of New London, Ia., Mrs.
Belle Magel, of Ashland, Mrs. Mary Sherrill, Mrs. Sara Higgins and Mrs John Houston, of
this city, all of whom were present at the time of his death. He is also survived by a
brother, James, who resides in the old country, 25 grandchildren and 17
great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hamilton was a very patient sufferer and though quite feeble, owing to his advanced
years, he was perfectly conscious to the last. The affectionate daughters devoted
themselves unremittingly to the care of the invalid and made the last days of their father
as comfortable as possible. Before he left Ireland he became a member of the Old School
Presbyterian church to which denomination he was ever faithful. In politics he was a
democrat.
Funeral services will be conducted from his late home, Friday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock,
Rev. W. G. Lloyd, officiating, Interment will be made at Walnut Ridge cemetery.

William E. "Sonny" Hankins - 1942-2003
William E. "Sonny" Hankins, 60, of Beardstown, died early
Wednesday morning, Feb. 26, 2003, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
He was born Dec. 21, 1942, in Beardstown, the son of James and Marie
Dozier Hankins. He married Sadie Mobley March 27, 1982, in Beardstown and she preceded him
in death Nov. 28, 1994.
He is survived by three sisters, Velma Coats, Anna Landreth, and Bettie
Taylor, all of Beardstown; and several neices and nephews. He
was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Mary Brogdon and Judy Sweeten.
Mr. Hankins attended school in Beardstown. He was employed at Precision
Tank and Equipment Co. in Virignia and Bill's Truck Wash in Beardstown. He enjoyed playing
with his dogs and riding in his truck.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Sager Funeral Home in
Beardstown, with burial in Beardstown City Cemetery. Family will meet friends from 1 p.m.

John R. Hartman - 1914-2003 - Beardstown
John R. Hartman, 88, of Beardstown died Wednesday morning, Feb. 12,
2003, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
He was born Dec. 7, 1914, in Chandlerville, the son of Charles C. and
Bertha Force Hartman. He married Dorris B. Hagerty Sept. 3, 1940, in Keokuk, Iowa, and she
survives in Beardstown.
He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by three brothers, Harry, Samuel (surviving wife, Virginia
Hartman of Jacksonville) and William.
Mr. Hartman attended school in Naples. He was a member of the First
United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men in Beardstown. He was employed with
Burlington-Northern Railroad in Beardstown and was a member of the United Transportation
Union for 30
years, retiring in 1974. Mr. Hartman enjoyed gardening and grooming his yard. He
especially enjoyed traveling with his wife after his retirement. He was very proud that he
and his wife had celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United
Methodist Church in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Friends may call
after 4 p.m. Friday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown with family meeting friends from
6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Dr. James Jackson Hea, Jr. - 1920-2003 - Beardstown
Dr. James Jackson Hea Jr., M.D., 82, of Beardstown, died Thursday, Feb.
20, 2003, at his residence.
He was born July 3, 1920, in Fort McPherson, Ga., the son of James
Jackson Hea and Harriet Weimer Yarger Hea.
He is survived by 5 sons, James J. (wife, JoAnne) III of Nashville,
Tenn., Matthew C. (wife, Susie) of Pratville, Ala., Theodore A. (wife, Chryssia) of
Quincy, Christopher A. of Beardstown and Joseph H. (wife, Emily) of Mount Sterling; two
daughters, Louise E. (husband, Dr. Seth Silverstein) Hea Smith of Charlottesville, Va.,
and Maggie Hea Taylor of Beardstown; 12 grandchildren; one brother, Marshall C. of Santa
Monica, Calif.; and one sister, Harriet of Hollywood, Calif.
Dr. Hea received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Northwestern
University in 1950 and practiced family medicine in the Beardstown area from 1959 until
his retirement in 1998. He loved to play bridge and enjoyed working with horses, rose
gardening, woodworking, fruit and vegetable growing, beekeeping and was an avid hunter and
fisherman. He will be missed by his many patients, friends and family who appreciated his
medical expertise and respected him for his knowledge in several areas, which he willingly
shared.
The Veteran of Foreign Wars Guthrie-Pierce Post 1239 will honor Dr. Hea
with military rites for his service in World War II at the Battle of the Bulge and Rhine
Crossing. He achieved the rank of Captain and served as a Parachute Infantry Unit
Commander of the 17th Airborne Division of the Army.
Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hackman Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Sunday evening with family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m. at
Goodwin Funeral Home in Beardstown. Friends and family may meet at Goodwin Funeral Home at
10:00 a.m. for funeral

Mary Ann Hefley, 49, of Springfield and formerly of
Beardstown and Quincy, died Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 19, 2003, at St. John's Hospice in
Springfield.
She was born May 27, 1954, in Litchfield, the daughter of William
Harry and Opal Loraine Wilson Hefley.
She is survived by her father; three brothers, Kenneth, Jack (wife,
Madeline) and Terry (wife, Kim), all of Beardstown; seven sisters, Linda (husband, Hansil)
Hartle of Hazel Wood, Mo., Shirley (husband, Gary) Satterlee of Chatham, Billie Cornell of
Jacksonville, Dorothy (deceased husband, Mike) Hendricker of Beardstown, Janel (husband,
Mike) Jones of Chatham, Tammy Jenkins of Greenfield and Penny (husband, Chris) Brown of
Girard; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was
preceded in death by her mother; one sister, Betty Eddington; and her companion, William
'Rocket' Calvin.
Ms. Hefley was a graduate of Beardstown High School. She worked as a
nurse's aid during her career in health care. Among many other things, she most enjoyed
shopping, crafts, and the holidays.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Beardstown, with
burial at the Beardstown City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at the

Lola Dell Hembrough
Lola Dell Hembrough, 90, of Beardstown and formerly of
Franklin, died Sunday Nov. 10, 2002, at Heritage Manor East in Beardstown.
She was born September 7, 1912, in Clay County, the
daughter of Perry and Mary E. Atchason Childers. She married Richard Harvey
"Richie" Hembrough July 18, 1931, in St. Louis, and he preceded her in death
July 8, 1979.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Eugene "Bob"
(wife, Sue) of Beardstown and Richard Allen "Dickie" (wife, Bonnie) of Sterling
City, Calif.; three grandaughters; one grandson; one sister, Louise Childers Chatfield of
Bonita Springs, Fla.; and one brother, Henry "Skip" Childers of Bonita Springs,
Fla. She was preceded in death by one son, Richard Eugene; one grandson; four brothers,
Warren, James, Russell and Raymond Childers; and three sisters, Irene McGee, Dorothy
Raichard and Mary Herman.
Mrs. Hembrough worked in the dietary department of the
Jacksonville State Hospital, retiring after 20 years. She was a member of Franklin United
Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Neece
Funeral Home in Franklin, with burial at Franklin Cemetery. Visitation will follow the
funeral at the home of Bob and Sue Hembrough at 316 West 8th Street in Beardstown.

Herman Ray Hennings Jr. - 1933-2002 - Beardstown
Herman Ray Hennings Jr., 69, of Beardstown, died Saturday
morning, December 21, 2002, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
He was born Feb. 27, 1933, in Taylorville, the son of Herman and Jetty
Wilson Hennings. He married Delores Jeanne Loss on Dec. 21, 1979, in Beardstown, and she
survives.
He is also survived by three sons, Walter Ray (wife, Kathy) Hennings of
Springfield, David Hennings of Waggoner and John Hennings
of Beardstown; one daughter, Pamela Chandler, of Springfield; one stepson Robert (wife,
Darlene) Walker of Beardstown; three stepdaughters, Diana Walker and Catherine Walker both
of Walla Walla, Wash., and Lynn (husband, Phil) Riveria of Draper, Utah; five
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three
step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, LeRoy (wife, Liz) Hennings and William Hennings
both of Decatur; and two sisters Marie (husband, John) Duff of Butler and Delores Hennings
of Taylorville. He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters in infancy, and
one sister Annabelle Kopp (surviving husband, Raymond).
Mr. Hennings was a member of the First Christian Church in Beardstown.
He retired from Precision Tank and Equipment Company in Virginia in 1997 after many years
of service. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking outdoors and listening to
country/western music.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at the
First Christian Church in Beardstown, with Mike Courson officiating. Burial will be at the
Beardstown City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the Sager Funeral Home in
Beardstown, with the family meeting friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday.

Jeanne Hennings, 72, of Beardstown, died Thursday evening, May 15,
2003, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
She was born Nov. 8, 1930, in Seattle, Wash., the daughter of William
and Winifred Loos. She married Herman Ray Hennings Dec. 21, 1979, and he preceded her in
death Dec. 21, 2002.
She is survived by two sons Robert (wife, Darlene) Walker and John
Hennings, both of Beardstown; three daughters Diana Walker and
Catherine Walker, both of Walla Walla, Wash., and Lynn (husband, Phil) Rivera of Draper,
Utah; two stepsons Walter Ray (wife, Kathy)

Mrs. Hennings was a member of the First Christian Church in Beardstown.
She was formerly employed at the Arrow Restaurant and Main Street Tap in Beardstown.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Sager Funeral Home in
Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Family will meet friends from 9:30

Thomas H. HERRON, former resident of Schuyler County died at his home in Beardstown. The
following is taken from the Beardstown Illinoian- Star.
Thomas H. HERRON was born in McDonough County, March 1, 1869 and died at his home April
15, 1923, aged 54 years, 1 month, & 14 days.
Mr. HERRON moved to Schuyler County with his parents when he was a boy, coming to this
city about 5 years ago.
On January 9, 1898 he married Dora WARDELL. To this union 10 children were born, 2 of whom
preceded their father in death. Besides his wife he is survived by four sons, Hugh, Fred,
Roy, and Robert and four daughters, Marie, Edith, Catherine, and Ina.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday April 17, at 2 P.M. at the Christian Church in
Frederick, Rev. G. L. Losh officiating. Interment in the Gillette Cemetery.

Edward "Ed" Eugene Hill, 73, of
Beardstown, died Sunday morning, Aug. 24, 2003, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
He was born June 24, 1930, in Jacksonville, the son of Charles Elmer
and Ruth Thies Hill. He married June Landes in April 1949, and she survives in Mount
Sterling. He later married Bonnie Belville on Oct. 6, 1972, in Rushville, and she survives
in Beardstown.
He is also survived by one son, Larry (wife, Judy) Hll of
Jacksonville; five daughters, Judy (husband, Earl) Weaver of Quincy, Kathy (husband,
Dennis) Houston of Mount Sterling, Sharon (husband, Donald) Taylor of Mendon, Linda
(husband, Earl) Cooley of Versialles and MaryAnn (husband, Joseph) Rayborn of Mount
Sterling; two stepsons, Leon (wife, Terri) Clark and Mike Logsdon, both of Beardstown; one
stepdaughter, Debbie (husband, Rich) France of Beardstown; one foster daughter, Kelly
Bramer of Texas; 29 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchidren; one brother, Floyd (wife,
Jeannie) Hill of Picayune, Miss.; and three sisters, Donna Viera of Picayune, Miss., Mary
McCue of LaMirada, Calif., and Ruth "Aileen" Nunes of Granite City. He was
preceded in death by one brother, Charles Hill; one son-in-law, Tim Hollis; and two
grandchildren, Trisha Ann Eilts and Jennifer Hollis.
Mr. Hill attended school in Jacksonville, and he attended First
Southern Baptist Church in Beardstown. He was a member of the Asbestos Workers Heat and
Frost Union Local 17 in Chicago from 1947 until 1982 and worked for numerous contractors
installing heating and cooling equipment. Mr. Hill farmed in Fulton County and enjoyed
fishing, camping, traveling, and playing cards.
Graveside funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Diamond
Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. The funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30
a.m. Tuesday. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown,
with the family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials have

Anita D. Hoagland, 43, of
Jacksonville died Monday afternoon, Aug. 17, 1998, at her home.
She was born Aug. 16, 1955 in Beardstown, the daughter of Walter Dean
and Kathryn Jockisch Cox. She married Fred Hoagland June 9, 1974, in Virginia, and he
survives.
She is also survived by two daughters, Jennifer (husband, Dennis)
Fernandes and Rachel, both of Jacksonville; her mother of Virginia; and two sisters, Jan
(husband, Charles) Hagloch and Chris (husband, John) Dixon, both of Virginia; several
nieces and nephews; and one great-niece. She was preceded in death by her father.
Mrs. Hoagland was a residential care worker for the Illinois School
for the Deaf. She graduated from Virginia High School in 1973 and was a member of AFSCME
Local 38 and the Shiloh-Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Virginia.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Williamson
Funeral Home with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery at Virginia.
Memorials are suggested to the Morgan County Cancer Transportation
Fund.

Darrell Holmes, 76 years, of
Virginia, IL died Sunday morning, March 16, 2003, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in
Rushville.
He was born Nov. 16, 1926, in Centralia, the son of Otto and Eileen
Holmes. He married Anna Mae Toquinto, and she preceded in death in 2001.
He is survived by two step daughters, Annette (husband, Fred) Davis of
Virginia and Charlotte Phillips of California City, Calif.; two step-sons, Doug Toquinto
of Virginia and Robert Toquinto of Raleigh, N.C.; 9 step-grandchildren; 2 step-great
grandchildren; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by one step-grandson.
Mr. Holmes served with the US Army during WW II and was employed many
years as a diesel mechanic.
Cremation rites will be accorded. Graveside committal services will be
held 9 a.m. Friday, March 21, 2003, at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. There will be no
visitation. The Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home of Virginia is in charge of arrangements.

"Death's Doings
Mrs. Elizabeth Hopkins, died at her late residence in this city Sunday,
her funeral occuring [occurring] Tuesday at 11 o'clock a.m. Services were conducted at the
M.E. church by Rev. Greenburry Garner, who had known the deceased from infancy. The
Reverend Garner, spoke very feelingly of the good qualities of Mrs. Hopkins and of the
life she had lived, and of which he had such a full knowledge. The remains were followed
to Walnut Ridge by a large number of friends and relatives, where the aged dead was laid
to rest beside the remains of her husband, who died about five years ago.
Elizabeth Beggs-Hopkins, daughter of Charles and Dorothy Trumbo Beggs
was born June 15, 1798, in Bourbon county, Kentucky.
From Kentucky her parents removed, in 1799 to Clarke county, Indiana,
settling at the Big Cave Spring, about six miies [miles] from the falls of the Ohio, now
Louisville, Kentucky.
In 1814 she was converted, joining the Methodist Episcopal Church, of
which she remained a faithful member up to the time of her decease, extending over a
period of 72 years.
June 18, 1816, she was married to Henry Hopkins, a native of the state
of Delaware.
In 1825 Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins removed to Illinois, residing for one year
in Jersey Prairie, Morgan County. Making a permanent settlement,
in 1826, at Sugar Grove, Cass county, where they remained until 1875 - a period of 49
years - removing from there to this city, where she has since resided.
Mrs. Hopkins was the mother of 12 children, 5 sons and 7 daughters, 10
of whom survive her - 5 sons and 5 daughters, as follows: Rebecca (Trauber) of Cherryvale,
Kansas; Nancy S., (Berry) of Virginia; Sarah E., (Cunningham) of Cass county; Chas. B., of
Kansas; Robert H., of Denton county, Texas; George M. of Denver, Colorado; Mary E.,
(Elder) of Normal; James M., of Wilson county, Kansas; Zack J., of Page county, Iowa; and
Ruth A., of this city.
Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins settled in Illinois at a very early day, when the
country was but sparsely settled. Open-handed hospitality and Christian charity were
their crowning virtues, and it could be said of them, they never failed to respond to the
calls for help which were frequent among the newly settled people. And, as the old
settlers will remember, the sick with them found shelter and tender care, and the needy
were not turned from their cabin door, empty handed.
Aunt Betsy, as she is familiarly known, has gone to her reward."

Marge Houchin, 63, of Ashland, died Wednesday evening,
Feb. 12, 2003 at St. John's Hospice in Springfield.
She was born Aug. 24, 1939, in Sommerville, Ind., the
daughter of Gilbert J. and Amanda Jones Bottoms. She married Berman R. "Bud"
Houchin July 27, 1956, in Kalamazoo, Mich., and he preceded her in death May 14, 2001.
She is survived by two sons, Bud and Mark (wife,
Pam), both of Ashland; three daughters, Jennifer Miller of Port Latavia, La., Brenda
(husband, Hank) Smith of Pleasant Plains, and Kathy Jo (husband, Michael) Beddingfield of
Naples, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, Russell Bottoms of
Virden and Fred (wife, Karen) Bottoms of Modesto; four sisters, Eva Hunt of Jerseyville,
Barb (husband, Fran) Giberson of Girard, Martha (husband, Bob) Beamen of Nokomis, and
Kathy Bottoms of Fort Myers, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in
death by her parents; and four brothers, Jack Harley, Earl, and Bob Bottoms.
Mrs. Houchin was employed as a cook for A-C Central High
School for the past eight years. She enjoyed playing Bingo and visiting the Alton Belle
Casino.

Beth
Howard, 74, of Virginia, died Thursday, June 15, 2006 at the Passavant Hospital
Transitional Care Unit in Jacksonville.
She was born March 30, 1932 in Shelley, ID, the daughter of Charles
Frederick and Coral Aretta Sant Boyce. She married Wendell Howard on March 29, 1952, in
Tucson, AZ and he survives. Their marriage was solemnized at the Washington, DC Temple in
1980.
She is also survived by a son, Daniel (wife, Lyn) Howard of
Jacksonville; four daughters, Debra (husband, Fred) Ore of Grand Island, Nebraska, Karen
Brown of Roodhouse, Linda Milich of Bonney Lake, WA, and Janet Mefford of Springfield; 26
grandchildren; six great grandchildren; five sisters, Mary, Afton, Beverly, Rhea, and
Marchell; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Jennifer
Milich.
Mrs. Howard was formerly employed as a nurse aide. In addition to
being a devoted wife and homemaker, she loved and tended many area children in her home.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had served the
church in various positions.
Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Jacksonville with burial in Beardstown City Cemetery.

Donald H. Huff, 88 years, of Pontiac, IL and formerly of Virginia, IL died
Tuesday, morning October 11, 2005 at Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL.
He was born July 10, 1917 in Hammond, IL the son of Estle James and Florence
Lucille Davis Huff. He married Marguerite Ellen Monaghan November 19, 1945 in Bement, IL
and she preceded him in death on April 8, 1992.
He is survived by one daughter, Donna (husband, Roger) Henkel of Graymont,
IL; seven grandchildren, Tina (husband, Ralph) Weller of Beardstown, Shawn Daubs of Lisle,
IL, Brent (wife, Jenny) Henkel of El Paso, IL, Todd (wife, Kari) Henkel of Pontiac,
Katrina (husband, Brian) Witwicki of Aurora, IL, Bridget Henkel of Normal, IL and Ryan
Henkel of Graymont; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, James E. Huff in 1971 and a
sister, Dora Lee Robertson.
Mr. Huff was born and raised in Hammond, IL graduating from Hammond High
School in 1935. He then went to barber school in Champaign. Served in the United States
Army from April 21, 1941 thru October 17, 1945. He was in the Pacific Theater of war and
was awarded the rank of sergeant. He started barbering with his father in Hammond. He
later was a barber in Champaign, IL and Farmer City, IL before moving to Virginia, IL and
operating his shop there for 37 years. He was a member of the American Legion and Masonic
Lodge #544 in Virginia. He was a mason for over 50 years and was also a shriner.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday at the Massie-Buchanan
Funeral Home in Virginia with burial in the Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Visitation
will be from 10:00 to 11:00 AM Friday, October 14, 2005 at the funeral home. Memorial

William C. Huffman 1926-2005 - Virginia
William C. Huffman, 78, of rural Virginia, died Saturday morning, April 16,
2005, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
He was born May 14, 1926, in Cass County, the son of George L. And Alma
Niestradt Huffman. He married Catherine Braner on September 14, 1946, in Jacksonville, and
she survives.
He is also survived by a son, Robert A. (wife, Kitten Lawless) of Sterling,
Colo.; two daughters, Rebecca A. (husband, David) Virgin of rural Arenzville and Robyn A.
(companion, Donna Merris) of New York City; and six grandchildren, Rochet Huffman of St.
Louis, Airman Stuart Huffman stationed with the USAF in Monterey, Calif., Sarah Virgin of
Paris, Zachariah Virgin of Mattoon and Kate and Kristen Huffman, both of New York City. He
was preceded in death by one brother, G. Lee.
Mr. Huffman was a graduate of Arenzville High School and served with the US
Navy during WW II. He has farmed in Cass County for 60 years. An accomplished organist
since childhood, he has been a church organist for over 70 years, most recently at
Virginia United Methodist Church. He was a past president and a 20 year member of the
Virginia School Board. He served on the committee which founded Lincoln Land Community
College and was a former member and chairman of the Cass County Zoning Board. He was a
member
of the Virginia United Methodist Church and the Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Virginia United
Methodist Church, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Friends may call after

William Henry Huppe - 1911-2003 - Arenzville
William Henry Huppe, 92, of Arenzville, died Saturday evening, Sept.
20, 2003, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
He was born April 3, 1911, in Arenzville, the son of Henry F. and
Lucinda Roegge Huppe. He married Nina M. Fricke on Jan. 19, 1933, in Arenzville, and she
preceded him in death Aug. 15, 1993.
He is survived by three daughters, Maxine (husband, Ronald) Lashmet of
Jacksonville, Bonita (husband, Carl) Becker of Alexander and Evelyn (husband, David)
Thompson, of Carrollton; one son, Henry (wife, Carole) of Arenzville; 10 grandchildren,
Craig Lashmet, Debra Carlson, Timothy Becker, Lucinda Knight, Marc Becker, Joni Epperson,
Peggy Cleary, Curtis Thompson, Karla Huppe and Kyle Huppe; and 19 great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur; and four sisters, Alma Vette, Minnie Carls,
Norma Krohe and Edna Lotter.
Mr. Huppe was a 1927 graduate of Brown's Business College in
Jacksonville. He was a lifelong and faithful member of Trinity
Lutheran Church in Arenzville and farmed west of Arenzville his entire life.

at Arenzville with burial at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Arenzville. The family will meet

Mary Phyllis Hutchings, 77, of Coconut Creek, Fla., and formerly of
Beardstown, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at Hospice By The Sea in Boca Raton, Fla.
She was born July 1, 1925, in Normal, the daughter of Roy and Goldie
Marie Moulton-Leonard Watkins. She married Jack Hutchings Dec.
21, 1948, and he preceded her in death.
She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Ann Adrian and Patricia
(husband, David) Grimm; two sons, John and Steven; three grandchildren Trevor, Brandon and
Nicholas, all of Florida; and several cousins.
Mrs. Hutchings graduated from Bradley University in Peoria with a BS in
Home Economics. She worked in the accounting department for
several south Florida banks.

Karen Sue Hymes, 50, of Beardstown, died Sunday afternoon, March 23,

motorcycle accident.
She was born April 16, 1952, in Beardstown, the daughter of Herschel J.
and Daretta L. Taylor Workman.
She is survived by her mother and step-father, Jack Bingham of
Beardstown; one son, Rob Hymes of Beardstown, two sisters, Kathy (husband, Bob)
Collison of Macomb and Kay (husband, Dave) Utter of Beardstown; her companion, John Andris
of Beardstown; three
stepbrothers, Dennis (wife, Chris) Coil of Downer's Grove, Don (wife, Tammy) Coil of
Omaha, Neb., and John Bingham of Naperville; three
nieces; and several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her father; maternal
grandparents, Garrett and Alice Taylor; and paternal grandparents Dewey and Evie Workman.
Ms. Hymes was a graduate of Beardstown High School in the class of
1970. She was a member of the Beardstown Fall Fun Festival Committee, Chaplain of Illinois
River A.B.A.T.E. Schuyler/McDonough County Storm Chasers, Scuyler County Emergency
Disaster Agency, and Fourth Street First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Beardstown. She
enjoyed riding motorcycles, fitness, bicycling, dancing, target shooting, swimming and
cooking, especially her homemade noodles. She handled various fitness programs and worked
as a receptionist for Beardstown Park District, Washington School and McDonough County
Clerks office.
Memorial services for cremated remains will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday
at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Beardstown, with burial next to her father at
Beardstown City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Goodwin Funeral
