PELHAM
Marion Dimond 15 Nov 2:21:26 1998
Looking for names of witnesses in DUFF ARMSTRONG trial (1858), Lincoln's famous almanac trial in Beardstown. The murder happened in Mason County, near Easton, where Duff is buried. Legend is someone in our family--MARTHA DIMOND PELHAM (later Shultz)--was one of the witnesses.

We came to Beardstown yesterday, and visited the courtroom and the Beardstown library, but though we found a few short historical accounts, we didn't find a list of witnesses. One account said 15 character witnesses testified for the defense--maybe she was one of those.

If anybody has this info, or ideas where we might find it, we'd love to hear from you. Thanks!

William died 1851 while making a flat boat trip to New Orleans. I am trying to trace his ancestry and discern whether he was a brother of Jeremiah Nelms, my GGGgf. I saw the name of William in the index of one of the printed histories of Cass Co., but was unable to find his name on the page referenced in the index. Can anyone provide any information on him? SCHAAF
Paul Schoaff 12 Aug 1998
Looking for additional information on Franz SCHAAF and his descendants. It is my belief that:
                (1) Franz came from Önsbach, Baden around 1850 at the age of 10 and was apprenticed to a blacksmith in                         Chandlerville.
                (2) That Frank lived his whole life thereafter in Chandlerville, dying there in 1915.
                (3) That Frank married and had Edward, William, Josephine, John, Carl or Charles, Albert A., and Frank P.
                (4) That Frank P. married Eliz. SHEEDY and became, after his father, a blacksmith/mechanic in Chandlerville.
                (5) That none of the second generation had issue and are all buried in the local cemetery.     Frank P. died in 1958.
                (6) That Franz may have used the spelling, SCHOAF, or, SCHOAFF, at various times.
                (7) That Franz had a brother, Ignatius, of Peoria (from whom I am descended), and a possible brother, William, in                         Perry Co., MO.

I would be interested in finding descendants of this family, if any. I would like to find any census information for 1860/1870 that may indicate if Franz was apprenticed to an older blacksmith, and, if so, the name. I am interested in any wills, court records, land transactions, etc. for any member of the family. I would be interested in any newspaper trivia -- advertisements for the business, for example, or legal postings, or whatever.

Should there be any interest in this family or its branches by anyone, I will be happy to share all that I have at my earliest convenience.
