LaVerne Chamberlain, 1906-2002, Virginia
   LaVerne Chamberlain, 96, of Virginia, died Sunday evening, Sept. 29, 2002, at her residence.
   She was born Aug. 11, 1906, in Meredosia, the daughter of Frank and Lula Schaefer Unland. She married Burton Chamberlain, Dec. 20, 1924, and he preceded her in death in 1981.
She is survived by three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and one brother, Hubert Unland of Beardstown. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Virginia Lee Leinberger; one granddaughter; three sisters, Freida Rhodes, Edythe Hagel and Allene Wills; and one brother, Alvin Unland.
   Mrs. Chamberlain was a graduate of Meredosia High School. She was a homemaker and a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Bluffs. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, cooking and especially playing bridge and watching baseball games.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Cody & Son Memorial Home, with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Jacksonville. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home, with the family meeting friends from 5:30-7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Schuyler-Cass Hospice.

Rose Mary Chambers, 1903-2008, Bluff Springs
   Rose Mary Chambers, 105, of Bluff Springs, died Sunday evening, March 30, 2008, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
   She was born Feb. 9, 1903, in Bluff Springs, the daughter of George and Emma Jones Carls. She married C. Dewey Chambers on June 28, 1920, in Hannibal, Mo., and he preceded her in death in 1986.
   She is survived by one daughter, Helen M. Utter of Bluff Springs; two grandchildren, Thomas M. Utter of Danville and Nancy Giovannini of Bluff Springs; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Jane Kalal; one grandson, Robert Lee, and two brothers, Richard and Frank Carls.
   During World War II Mrs. Chambers and her husband resided in Wilmington where she was employed at the Joliet Army Arsenal Plant Plant and later took in borders. Upon returning to Bluff Springs, she and her husband farmed, gardened, assisted with the Chambers Melon Market, and enjoyed fishing vacations in Wisconsin. She was a member of Bluff Springs United Methodist Church, was a skilled quilter, and was an active member of her community. She truly loved her family, and was a good friend to all.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Bluff Springs United Methodist Church, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to the funeral services at the church. Memorials are suggested to Bluff Springs United Methodist Church or Cass County Visiting Nurses. Geraldine J. Chaney, 1930-2007, Virginia
   Geraldine J. Chaney, 76, of Virginia, and formerly of Decatur, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2007, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
   She was born Oct. 31, 1930, in Owaneco, the daughter of Joseph A. and Mabel Logue Tipsword. She married Melvin Chaney on April 12, 1952, and he preceded her in death June 14, 1992.
   She is survived by one son, Brian (wife, Judy) of Virginia; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Wilma Jane Williams of Decatur. She was preceded in death by two sisters.
   Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home in Decatur. Cremation rites will be accorded following services. CHAPMAN, Thomas - Virginia Gazette, April 1, 1904 - Submitted by Ernest Launer
   Former Cass County Sheriff Dead. Thomas Chapman died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Millar, of Warrensburg, Mo., last week. The deceased was a resident of the Newmansville neighborhood over thirty years ago, and about that time he was elected to the office of sheriff of Cass County. He was a democrat and was a highly respected citizen of this county.

James W. Chilton
   James William Chilton, 60, of Virginia died Sunday, Aug. 28, at Passavant Hospital. He was born in Chandlerville April 7, 1923, son of Thomas and Elsie Rethorn Chilton. He married Margaret Alison Cox in 1944 and she survives.
   Also surviving are three children, Nancy L. Chilton-Logsdon of Bartelsville, Okla.; Lora J. Chilton-Smith of Springfield; and John R. Chilton of Salt Lake City, Utah; three granddaughters and a grandson; and a brother, Thomas Herbert Chilton of Virginia.
   A sister preceded him in death.
   Services were Aug. 31 at Massie Funeral Home in Virginia with Rev. Bill Jones and Rev. Albert Smith officiating. Barb Cook was the organist. Pallbearers were Eddie Bierhaus, Ronnie McLeod, Ronnie Swearingen, Everett Hish, Vernon Miller, and Eddie Ore. Honorary pallbearers were Nick Velten, Kenneth Cox, Vernon Wilson, Franklin Kruse, Ralph Henry, Glen Granbois, Willis Jones and Don Smith. Burial was in Chandlerville Cemetery. The family requests no flowers; memorials are directed to the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired Recreation Equipment Fund.

CHILTON, Stephen - Virginia Gazette, Feb. 23, 1883
   Died Tuesday, Stephen, son of John Chilton. He had been an invalid and was crippled the last few years.
