Velma R. Coats 1934-2006, Beardstown
Velma R. Coats, 72, of West Plains, Mo., and formerly of Beardstown, died Sunday morning, Sept. 24, 2006, in West Plains, Mo., after battling cancer.
She was born May 13, 1934, in Beardstown, the daughter of James and Marie Dozier Hankins. She married William G. "Willie" Coats on Dec. 24, 1957, in Beardstown, and he preceded her in death July 11, 1993.
She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Williams of West Plains, Mo.; one step-son, William H. Coats of Cottage Hills; two grandchildren, Ricky R. Williams and Robyn Watkins, both of West Plains, Mo.; two stepgrandchildren, Amber and Brittany Coats, both of Cottage Hills; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bettie Taylor of Beardstown. She was preceded in death by one brother, William "Sonny" Hankins; and three sisters, Mary Brogdon, Judy Sweeten and Anna Landreth.
Mrs. Coats was a homemaker and enjoyed crafting, crocheting, and playing Bingo. She loved animals, especially her own dogs and cats.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent to sagerfh@casscomm.com.

Funeral Services for Velma Coats were held 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Personal reflections were given by her daughter, Nancy Williams, and also Tom Wright. Pianist Trish Sager accompanied vocalist Wyatt Sager as he sang "In the Garden," "Mansion Over the Hilltop" and "Blessed Assurance." Pallbearers were Terry Watkins, Rick Williams, Mark Yost, Roger Taylor, Tom Wright and Herb and Butch Coats. Burial was at Beardstown Cemetery.
COFFEE, Pauline - Ashland Sentinel, Ashland, Illinois, January 28, 1888, reprinted in The Cass County Historian, June 1992
Died at the residence of Lewellyin Davis of Oregon Precinct, January 18, of dropsey of the heart, Mrs.Pauline Coffee, ate 70. She was born in Green County, Kentucky, August 1, 1817. Her father died when she was six and she and her mother later removed to Morgan County, Illinois, in 1832. She married Cabinia Coffee, November 17, 1834. he died December 17, 1878. From a family of seven sons and five daughters, only two survive, Mrs. Frank Davy and Mrs. L. Davis. She was interred beside her husband in Page-William Cemetery.

Haden Lee Coffey, 1927-2007, Virginia
Haden Lee Coffey, 80, of Virginia, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 14, 2007 at his residence.
He was born June 16, 1927 in Tallula, the son of Oscar and Ethel Powell Coffey. He married Joan Anderson on June 11, 1976, in Virginia, and she survives.
He is also survived two sons, Ken and Haden "Hoss" (wife, Tanna) Coffey, both of Virginia; four daughters, Karen (husband, Mike) Buck of Philadelphia, Ill., Kathy (husband, Dan) Long of Springfield, Kay Grebe of Corona, Calif., and Tina O’Keefe of Virginia; two step-sons, Butch (wife, Betty) Cobren of Philadelphia, Ill., and Billy Bateman of Virginia; 20 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Dean of Texas; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Kevin "Butch;" one brother, Richard "Tom;" and two sisters, Ada Mae White and Emma Marie Smith.
Mr. Coffey was a retired carpenter in the Virginia area. He was a past member and governor of the Decatur Moose Lodge. He currently was the president of the Virginia Lion’s club and had formerly served as vice president, treasurer and district 1-G zone chairman. He served on the Virginia BBQ Committee and was a member of the Virginia United Methodist Church and served in the US Army during World War II.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Buchanan and Cody Funeral Home in Virginia, with burial in the Walnut Ridge Cemetery. Local man’s sister dies
Word was received yesterday by F.C. Coleman of the death of his sisters, Mrs. Ella Davis, which occurred yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Lay in Helena, Montana.
Funeral services will be in Bozeman, Montana, tomorrow.
Mrs. Davis was born in Sangamon Valley, in this county, the daughter of the later William and Nancy Coleman.
Her husband, Perry Davis, preceded her in death a number of years ago.
Surviving are three sons, Carl of Idaho; Noel and Edgar of Bozeman, Montana, and one daughter Mrs. Nettie Lay of Helena, Montana. A son, Roy, and a daughter Judy, preceded her in death.
Other survivors are Charles E Coleman of Butler, MO; E.C. Coleman of this city and John S Coleman of Pekin.
One brother, Arthur s Coleman, preceded her in death, March 6th last year. Three sisters and one brother died a number of years ago.

Virginia - Catherine Collins, 81, of Virginia, died at 1:11 a.m. Friday, April 4, at Passavant Hospital.
She was born Oct. 4, 1904, in Virginia, a daughter of James F. and Mary Kinney Collins.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Frank (Genevieve) Collins of Baton Rouge, LA; and a nephew, James Collins of Springfield, LA. She was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Collins; and one sister, Bernardine Collins.
She was a member of the Virginia Presbyterian Church and was a retired teacher from the Virginia school district. She was also a retired librarian for the Rock Island school district.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Virginia Presbyterian Church, with burial in Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia. Memorials are suggested to the Virginia Presbyterian Church.

Frances Bernadine Collins, 75, of Virginia, died at 7:59 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, at Passavant Area Hospital.
She was born July 10, 1910, in Virginia, a daughter of the late James F. and Mary Kinney Collins. She is survived by a sister, Catherine Collins of Virginia, and one nephew. She was preceded in death by one brother.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church in Virginia. Burial will be in Walnut Ridge Cemetery. Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the Massie Funeral Home in Virginia. Memorials are suggested to the Virginia Presbyterian Church.

Genevieve Cox Collins, 96, widow of Frank Collins Jr., died on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. Genevieve was born on July 12, 1912 in Lecompte to Claude and Bessie Cox. She is survived by her son, Jimmy Collins III, and his wife, Helen; and two nieces, Mary Lee McCoy, of Belen, N.M., and Barbara Gordon, of Greenville, Ga. Genevieve came to Baton Rouge to study at the LSU School of Music where she earned her master's degree in organ. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega and served as president two years. Following her marriage to her major professor, they traveled to Paris where Frank studied under the leading organist in the world, Marcel Dupre and she studied under the blind organist at Notre Dame Cathedral, Louis Vierne. They returned to Baton Rouge where Genevieve served as organist and choir master at Trinity Episcopal Church for 40 years and at Temple B'nai Israel for 50 years. She was an active member of the American Guild of Organists, serving as Dean several times, and the Philharmonic Club. Visiting at Trinity Episcopal Church on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m. Interment in Roselawn Memorial Park, Baton Rouge. Memorial donations may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church Organ Fund. Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., is in charge of arrangements.

J. Frank Collins, Jr. (May 4, 1902 - August 6, 1968)
Died at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. He lived at 406 Delgado St. A native of Virginia, Ill., he was a professor emeritus of music at LSU. The body is at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, with calling hours from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Religious services will be at Trinity Episcopal Church at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, conducted by the Rev. David Coughlin. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve Cox Collins, Baton Rouge, a son, James F. Collins III, Hammond, and two sisters, Miss Catherine Collins, and Miss Bernadine Collins, both of Virginia, Ill. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the music fund at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Margaret Constance "Connie" Collins, 80, of Springfield, and formerly of Virginia, died Thursday morning, Dec. 28, 2006 at St. Joseph’s Home in Springfield.
She was born June 2, 1926 in Springfield, the daughter of Louis and Mayme McKeown Carmody. She married Harry Junior Collins on June 10, 1950 in Springfield, and he preceded in death on Nov. 14, 1999.
She is survived by two sons, Mike (wife, Casey) of Jacksonville and Kevin (wife, Sue) of Peoria; two daughters, Colleen (husband, Douglas) Hyde of Oneida and Cathleen (husband, Brian) Gawthorp of Illiopolis; 10 grandchildren, Michelle Hyde of Chicago, Maggie and Patrick Hyde of Oneida, Katie and Brian Collins of Jacksonville, Ellen and Erica Thies of Illiopolis, and Carrie, Nick and Zac Collins of Peoria; one brother, Michael (wife, Pat) Carmody of Springfield; two sisters, Jean Carmody and Mary Carmody, both of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Collins was a graduate of Ursuline Academy in Springfield and attended Normal Teachers College (now Illinois State University). She taught school for the Virginia School District and later at Our Saviour Grade School in Jacksonville. After teaching, she worked in Central Management Services for the State of Illinois for 10 years. She was a member of St. Luke Parish in Virginia and was a former member of the Altar Society. She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Catholic Church in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Marjorie Rumble Collins, 94, of Virginia, IL died Sunday, May 25, 2008 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville, IL.
She was born March 2, 1914 in Cass County, IL; the daughter of Charles and Mary Millner Rumble. She married Joseph H. Collins on August 5, 1933 in Lewsitown, IL and he preceded in death in 1978.
She is survived by a son, Robert H. Collins (wife, Patricia) of Alexander, AR; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Rumble; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Howard Collins; a sister, Margaret Louise Maul; and four brothers, Chase, George, James and John Rumble.
Mrs. Collins provided housecleaning services for area residents, was employed at Trenter’s Grocery Store, and was an aide at Glossop’s Sheltered Care Home. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Virginia.

Mary Frances Kinney Collins - April 23, 1871 - December 9, 1957, Virginia, Illinois
Mrs. Mary F. Collins, aged 86 years, a resident of this city and wife of the late Frank Collins died at 12:30 Tuesday, at Walker's Nursing Home here.
She leaves two daughters, Catherine E. Collins of Moline, Illinois and Bernadine F. at home, a son, Frank, Jr. (Genevieve), of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and grandson James Frank Collins III.
Services were conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church with Rev. E.M. McGehee of Brighton officiating. Burial was at Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Sam Wester, C.R. Wilson, Glenn Davis, Robert Virgin, Rollo Rexroat, and Lawrence Dooling.
Assisting with flowers were Mrs. A.W. Sinclair, Mrs. Roy Winhold, Mrs. Bernita Farr, Miss Mary Margaret Blackburn, Mrs. Glenn Davis, Anna Mae Bond, Mrs. John Knight, Mrs. Crum Sinclair, and Miss Ruth Gustafson.
George McDonald sang, "Face to Face" and "Crossing the Bar", accompanied by Mrs. Otto Dour.
Note: Mary was born in Beardstown, Illinois to Patrick and Jane Cecelia (Murray) Kinney (both born in Loughguile Parish, County Antrim, Ireland). She had a younger brother and sister, John B. Kinney, and Rose Anna (Kinney) Greuel. She also had two nephews, Raymond Greuel and George Greuel.

Mary Virginia Collins, 79, of Ashland, died Monday evening, June 13, 2005, at her residence.
She was born June 29, 1925, in Menard County, the daughter of Lee Roy and Anne Marie Haggard Klein. She married John R. Collins on June 9, 1946, in Ashland, and he survives.
She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mrs. Collins was a 1943 graduate of Ashland High School and was employed by Pleasant Plains State Bank for 27 years prior to her retirement. She was a member of Ashland United Methodist Church and was known as a caring person who held a special interest in assisting the elderly.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Ashland, with burial at Pleasant Plains Cemetery in Pleasant Plains. Guilford Tom John Collison, March 27, 1925-October 24, 2006
Guilford Tom John Collison, 81, of Beardstown, died Tuesday, October 24, 2006, near Covington.
He was born March 27, 1925, in Winchester, the son of John and Mabel Dickens Collison.
Surviving are his daughter, Vickie (husband, Dale) Ring of Rushville; two sons, Tad Collison of Beardstown and Bob (wife, Kathy) Collison of Macomb; six grandchildren, Anne (husband, Rafe) Breedlove of Astoria, Collin (wife, Courtenay) Ring of Macomb, Brian (wife, Kirsten) Collison of Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, Marcus Collison of Miami, FL, Levi Collison of Beardstown, and Carly Collison of Macomb; six great-grandchildren, Jesika and Brody Breedlove, Alyssa and Chelsea Ring, and Zack and Adam Collison; one brother, Alvin (wife, Shirley) Collison of Nulerow, OK; three sisters, Lecie King and Edith Kennedy both of Winchester and Susie Milliken of Woodson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Merrill and Robert Collison; and three sisters, Katherine Bracket, Ethel Martin, and Lena Winningham.
Mr. Collison served in the US Army during World War II in the European Theatre and was involved in the landing at Utah Beach during D-Day. He was an active lifetime member of Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post #1239 and a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown. Mr. Collison as formerly employed with Delta Tank, Jones Trucking, Oscar Mayer, and Harris Market in Beardstown. He enjoyed attending ballgames and was a Rams football fan. Each fall he looked forward to the Arenzville Burgoo. Mr. Collison believed in the importance of being a blood donor and he himself donated nearly 15 gallons in his lifetime.
Graveside services for Guilford Collison were held at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, October 28, at Beardstown City Cemetery with Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post #1239 of Beardstown officiating. Those participating were: Commander Craig Stevens; Sr. Vice Commander Victor Smith; Jr. Vice Commander Calvin Anderson; Chaplain George Bell; Officer of the Day Dana Stevens; Color Guard Ed Chapman, Lloyd Schroeder, Ronald Summey, Bill Knight, Bud Carlock, Rich Vincent, and Charlie Petri; Squad Leader Dale Lovekamp; Rifle Squad Ed Leischner, Louis McCullough, John Ryman, Brian DeLoche, Jim Burnside, Dan Lenning, and Paul Sutterfield; Urn Bearer Frank Stailey. The bagpipes were played by Jim Parks. The flag was presented by Craig Stevens. "Taps" was played by John Myers.
Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown was in charge of arrangements.
Note: Mr. Collison was missing for a few months prior to his body being found in a wooded area near Covington, Illinois. He was last seen May 14, 2006 at approximately 10:00 a.m. at a community college in the vicinity of Toronto Rd. and Shephard Rd. in Springfield, Illinois.

Hazel I. Comisky, 1918-2008
Hazel I. Comiskey, 89, of Virginia, and formerly of Ashland and Tallula, died Thursday, January 10, 2008 at the Walker Nursing Home in Virginia.
She was born Feb. 25, 1918 in Ashland, the daughter of William "Bill" and Maude Jenkins Pettit. She married Patrick F. "Pat" Comiskey and he preceded in death in 1981.
She is survived by one son, Steve of Virginia; one daughter, Virginia "Jenny" (husband, Lowell) Bright of Ashland; four grandchildren, Tara (husband, Rodney) Davis of Virginia, Patricia (husband, Rick) Miller and Allen (wife, Melissa) Bright, both of Ashland, and Jennifer Illias of Chatham; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Homer (surviving wife, Emma Lou of Petersburg) Pettit and Kenny (surviving wife, Helen of Tallula) Pettit and one sister, Helen Sherren.
Mrs. Comiskey worked in the housekeeping department at Memorial Medical Center of Springfield for 10 years. She was a long time homemaker and surrogate caring Mom for many Ashland area children.

John Robert "Johnny Bob" Comiskey, 1964-2006, Ashland
John Robert "Johnny Bob" Comiskey, 41, of Ashland, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born Dec. 13, 1964, in Beardstown, the son of John and Betty Bottoms Comiskey.
He is survived by his stepfather, Jerry Farmer, of Ashland; his companion, Kathy Hock of Ashland; one brother, Terry "Buck" Comiskey of Chandlerville, one half brother, Charles "Chuck" Treadway of Beardstown; two half sisters, Bonnie Leverton and Barb Bradley, both of Beardstown; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, his mother, Betty Farmer; and two half brothers, Donny Treadway and Billy Joe Treadway.
Mr. Comiskey was the productions manager at Fulton Metal Works in Ashland were [where] he has been employed for 20 years. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and former member of the Ashland Jaycees.
Graveside memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Waverly East Cemetery in Waverly. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Ashland. He was born June 18, 1939 in Chandlerville, the son of Joseph Russell “Cookie” and May Hawkins Cook.
He is survived by his companion and former wife, Gladys Miller of Virginia; three daughters, Michelle Tufenkjian (husband, Steven) of Hoffman Estates, Janelle Dowd (husband, Ryan) of Chatham, and Trisha Cook-Law (husband, Jamie) of Auburn; two step children, Atonia Robinson (husband, Rick) of Virginia and Steve Anderson (wife, Dorothy) of Virginia; six grandchildren, Austin Morrissey, Zachary and Jacob Tufenkjian, Allie Barnes, Jocelyn Law, and Quinn Dowd; several step grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn Dillard (husband, Phillip) of Ashland; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Joseph Cook.
Mr. Cook served with the US Army in Germany during the Vietnam War. He then worked as a utilities lineman, as a technician for Cass Telephone, and as a truck driver. Most recently he was employed with Snyder Logging. He enjoyed working and was uncomfortable with idle time. He was a member of the Chandlerville American Legion and was a loving father and grandfather who will be sadly missed.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Joseph Russell 'Cookie' Cook, 1913-2003, Chandlerville
Joseph Russell "Cookie" Cook, 89, of Chandlerville, died Thursday afternoon, June 12, 2003, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
He was born Dec. 1, 1913, in Cass County, the son of Ralph and Hilma Turner Cook. He married May Hawkins on Dec. 19, 1935, in Pekin, and she preceded him in death June 11, 1996.
He is survived by one son, Jim of Chandlerville; one daughter, Marilyn (husband, Phil) Dillard of Springfield; seven grandchildren, Rocky Snyder of Chandlerville, Tracy Taylor of Virginia, Mandy Buckman of Ashland, Lori Cook of Virginia, Michell Tufenkjian of Hoffman Estates, Janelle Sapp of Williamsville and Trisha Cook of Springfield; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Reed and Annabelle Cloninger, both of Chandlerville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Joseph in 1992.
Mr. Cook was engaged in farming prior to working with the Chicago, Illinois & Midland Railroad. He later worked for Allis-Chalmers of Springfield and the Cass County Telephone and Cable TV Company. He retired from the City of Virginia after several years with the Street Department. He was a member of the former Chandlerville Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Lintner-Buchanan Funeral Home in Chandlerville, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Friends may call one hour prior to services Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Walker Nursing Home Activity Fund. Mrs. Catherine Cooper died the 24th at her residence. She was widow of Alexander Cooper who died eighteen years ago. She was 67 and death was due to cancer. She leaves a son, George and daughter, Mary Quigg of Kansas.
COOPER, Charles - Central Beardstown, Nov. 11, 1869
Charles Cooper died of lockjaw at his residence Saturday. He was a Cass county resident 35 years and a miller in Arenzville for 20 years.

Thomas A. 'Tom' Cosner, 1925-2008, Ashland
Thomas A. "Tom" Cosner, 82, of Ashland, died Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield.
He was born Feb. 9, 1925 in Cass County, the son of Thomas Alfred and Catherine Drinkwater Cosner. He married Judy Wiggins on December 29, 1977 in Ashland, and she survives.
He is also survived by one son, John T. "Jack" Cosner of Jacksonville; three daughters, Nancy Cosner (husband, Roger Schnaitter) of Bloomington, Melinda Cosner of Florida, and Ellen (husband, Michael) Macke of Springfield; one stepson, Jerry (wife, Denise) Wankel of Chandlerville; two step-daughters, Kay (husband, Dennis) DeGroot of Ashland and Trish Hannel of Springfield; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother, John Cosner (wife, Eleanor) of rural Virginia; one sister, Mary Cosner of Carlinville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph.
Mr. Cosner was a graduate of Ashland High School and attended the University of Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II before returning to farm in the Loami and Ashland areas. He later owned and operated TC Electric and TC Agri-Systems prior to becoming a partner in Custom Structures of Prentice. He was a member of Ashland United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Ashland United Methodist Church, with burial in Ashland Cemetery. The family will meet friends one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Ashland United Methodist Church or St. John’s Hospice. Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.
