GILLEN, Frank P. - Illinoian Star, Mar. 30,1932
Frank P. Gillen, Head of Dock Dredge Construction Company, Dies Here Today
Frank P., president of the Edward Gillen Dock Dredge and Construction Company, one of the largest marine contracting firms on the Illinois river, died at 2 o'clock this morning, at his late home, 1216 State Street. Mr. Gillen had suffered from ill health for the past two years, but although his illness had drawn heavily upon his resources of energy and vitality, his unconquerable spirit and indominable will kept him in active charge of his business affairs until the last two days of his life. He was born August 1, 1866, at Racine Wis., being 65 years, 7 months, and 28 days of age, at his death. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gillen and spent his early life in his native city of Racine, where he graduated from the high school and then later attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison. From boyhood he was interested in marine construction and he became associated with his father in that line of endeavor. Among the larger accomplishments for his firm were several large breakwater contracts, the Milwaukee Harbor and various piers and lighthouses on the Great Lakes. He resided at Racine and Oskosh Wis., before coming to Beardstown seventeen years ago to devote his attention to the building of levees along the Illinois River. He was united in marriage 43 years ago to Miss Anna L. Egan of Racine, and to this union were born six children, Mrs. J.W. Doyle and Francis H. Gillen of Beardstown, Clifford of Havana, Ill., Mrs. Wm. Walsh of Highland Park, Ill., and Thomas A.Gillen of Springfield, Ill., one child, Aurel, died at the age of 4 years. Besides the sorrowing widow, and the children, there are also seven grandchildren, Jack, Jim, and Mary Doyle, Eddie Lee Gillen, of Beardstown and Tommy and Billy Walsh of Chicago and Marianne Gillen of Havana. Mr. Gillen was a man of many exceptional characteristics, always of a sunny, jovial disposition he radiated cheerfulness among his associates and won many true and lasting friendships. Beloved and honored in his own family, as a wonderful husband and father, he was equally respected and admired as a worthy citizen, and friend. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock Thursday morning from the St. Alexius Catholic church, with Rev. Father Ahern officiating. Following the service here the body, escorted by family and friends will be taken to Oskosh, Wis., where interment will be made in the family plot at the cemetery there.
