John A. Hacker, 1931-2007, Beardstown
John Allen Hacker, 76, of Milan, and formerly of Beardstown, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, at Illini Hospital in Silvis.
He was born June 10, 1931, in Burlington, Iowa, the son of John and Ila Hacker. He married Clarice Jean Weller on Feb. 2, 1957, in Beardstown, and she preceded him in death in August 1991.
He is survived by companion, Carolyn Shonts; four sons, Richard (wife, Nancy) of Edgington, Tim (wife, Penny) of Beardstown, Doug of Davenport, Iowa, and David (wife, Carrie) of LaCosta, Calif.; one daughter, Cathy Johnson of Galesburg; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Gene of Interlachen, Fla., and Jack and Fred, both of Alexis; two sisters, Patricia McDorman of Gilson and Carol (husband, Don) Ash of Alexis; and stepfather, Clarence Skiles of Knoxville. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter.
Mr. Hacker was a self-employed carpet layer for 40 years. He enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing. Some of his most enjoyable times were hunting with his sons and grandsons and telling tall tales about those hunts. He was a Korean War veteran serving with the U.S. Army.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Friday at Wheelen-Pressley Funeral Home in Milan and one hour prior to services Saturday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Helen Grace Hackman, 94, of Springfield and formerly of Virginia and Vandalia, died Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at Oak Terrace Healthcare Center in Springfield.
She was born September 27, 1909 in Virginia, the daughter of Jacob and Lenna Way Davis. She married John Edward Hackman in June of 1937 and he preceded her in death on September 11, 1977.
She is survived by one son, J. Richard (wife, M. Judith) Hackman of Bethany, CT; tow granddaughters, Laura Dianne Hackman of New Canaan, CT and Julia Beth (husband, W. Trexler) Proffitt of Riverside, CA; three great-grandchildren; a sister Julia Lee "Judy" (husband John) Schaeffer of Springfield; two nieces and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Glen Davis and on niece.
Mrs. Hackman devoted her life to the care, well-being and education of children. She taught elementary school for many years in Virginia and St. Elmo. She was active member of the United Methodist Churches in Virginia and Vandalia.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 14 at First Presbyterian Church in Virginia, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia.

A man by the name of Hageman committed suicide in Beardstown Wednesday of last week. He was worth ten to fifteen thousand dollars and yet thought he was going to starve, he hung himself. His wife found him but he died an hour later. He was formerly proprietor of a lumber yard there.

Orville Lee "Skip" Hageman, 1936-2008, Beardstown
Orville Lee "Skip" Hageman, 71, of Superior, Wis., and formerly of Beardstown, died early Friday morning, Jan. 18, 2008, at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, Minn.
He was born Feb. 11, 1936, in Beardstown, the son of William "Burr" and Helen Orr Hageman. He married Becky Ullan on July 20, 1989, in Superior, Wis., and she survives.
He is also survived by four daughters, Becky (husband, Jim) Young of Virginia, Terri (husband, Les) Farwell of Beardstown, Cindy (husband, Scott) Cantrall of Andrew and Tonia Murray of Brainerd, Minn.; two sons, Tracy (wife, Linda) of Beardstown and Tim (wife, Nancy) of Big Lake, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Jack (wife, Pat) of Beardstown; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by one sister.
Mr. Hageman attended Beardstown High School and was a U.S. Army veteran stationed in Germany. He was employed at Beardstown Flour Mill and Bell Telephone in Beardstown. In Superior, he was employed at Famous Foods and retired from the City of Superior. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 1239 in Beardstown and the Color Guard of Superior, Wis., and was past president of the vocalizers of Duluth, Minn. He was also involved with the Men's Country Pool, VFW Golf and Superior Bowling Leagues. He coached Little League in Beardstown and Superior for many years. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and relaxing outside. His greatest pleasures were his children, grandchildren and friends.
Private services will be held at Soldiers Square at Greenwood Cemetery in Superior, Wis., at a later date. Cremation Society of Minnesota in Duluth, Minn., is in charge of arrangements.

Eric Hagen, 1963-2007, Ashland
William Eric Hagen, 43, of Ashland, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2007 at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield.
He was born Dec. 10, 1963 in Springfield, the son of William and Tonia Danenberger Hagen.
He is survived by his parents of Springfield; one daughter, Caitlyn of Ashland; one son, Kyle of Ashland; one sister, Tiffani of Springfield; his grandmother, Helen Danenberger of Ashland; and companion, Linda Isaly of Springfield.
Mr. Hagen was a graduate of Springfield Lanphier High School and attended Lincoln Land Community College and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He was self-employed as a licensed professional landscape contractor.
Cremation rites will be accorded. Graveside memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Ashland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to a fund to benefit his children.

Benson B. "Ben" Hager February 8, 1914-November 9, 2002
Benson B. "Ben" Hager, 88, of Beardstown, died Saturday evening, November 9, 2002, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
He was born February 8, 1914 in Sangamon Valley Township near Beardstown, the son of Clarence William and Mary "Maye" Emmerson Harris Hager. He married Marie Wessel on January 29, 1939 in Palmyra, MO. She preceded him in death on May 19, 2002.
Surviving are four daughters, Judith (husband Roger) Carlsen of Frankfort, Jean (husband Richard) Piehler and Donna (husband Bob) Hickernell, both of Rushville, and Elaine (husband Jon) Taylor of Springfield; eight grandchildren, Brian Florey, David Piehler, Andrea Florey Tatum, Todd Taylor, Amy Crum, Keith Taylor, Scott Taylor, and Joshua Carlsen; six great grandchildren, Erin Taylor, Erika Taylor, Chance Taylor, Hannah Crum, Addison Crum, and Chase Piehler; one brother,Omar Hager of Mesa, AZ; and two sisters, Betty Braden of Rudyard, MI and Margaret (husband Harry "Brock") Brockman of Jacksonville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marie, and two brothers Vern and Dale.
Mr. Hager attended Limbo School in the Sangamon Valley Township near Beardstown and he graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1932. He was an active member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown where he formerly served on the church council. Mr. Hager previously served on the ASCS Board in Virginia, the Bluff Springs Elevator Board, and the Bluff Springs Township Board. He served 35 years on the Brick School and Beardstown Boards of Education. He was a charter member of the Beardstown Ducks Unlimited and he was a 50-year member of the Beardstown B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1007. Mr. Hager farmed in the Sangamon River bottoms of Cass County from 1931 until his retirement in 1985. He enjoyed playing softball and baseball and was an avid duck hunter. Mr. Hager was lovingly devoted to his family and he will be sadly missed.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 13, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown with the Rev. David Natzke officiating. Burial was in the Beardstown City Cemetery. Memorials have been suggested to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown or Cass County Hospice.

Janet L. Hager - 1935-2003 Ashland
Janet L. Janet L. Hager, 67 years, of Ashland, IL died Tuesday morning, April 1, 2003 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
She was born Oct. 5, 1935 in rural Virden, the daughter of Ivan Kendrick and Lillian Green Burris. She married Richard E. "Dick" Hager April 5, 1958 in Ashland, and he preceded in death June 8, 1990.
She is survived by two sons, Rick (wife, Alicia) of Ashland and Ben (wife, Susie), both of Ashland; five grandchildren, Adam, Christopher, Nicholas, Lexi, and Alec Hager; one brother, Dick (wife, Martha) of Jacksonville; two sisters, Barbara "Bobbie" (husband, Carol) Hacker of Springfield and Deanna (husband, Jim) Hedderich of Bastrop, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Scott K. Hager on April 4, 1999.
Mrs. Hager was a graduate of Springfield High School and was employed by Illinois Casualty Insurance, Commodity Merchants, and Timberlake Sales, all of Springfield. She later worked several years as church secretary for Ashland United Methodist Church, where she had been a member for many years. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, and antiques. She also enjoyed music and often played the piano and organ. She collected ducks, many of which were made by her husband.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Ashland United Methodist Church in Ashland with burial at Ashland Cemetery. Joe Hager, life long resident of Cass county, and prominent farmer near Ashland, Illinois, died at his home near that city at 10:30 o’clock this morning.
The deceased had been ill for several months suffering from an incurable malady. Every possible effort was made for his relief but to no avail, and he gradually grew worse, succumbing this morning.
The deceased was born in Sangamon Valley, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Hager and was about 59 years of age at the time of his death.
He grew to manhood in the home where he was born. He was first united in marriage to Miss Bessie Dobbs and to this union two sons were born, Elmer and Glen. Mrs. Hager passing away a good many years ago.
He was later married to Mrs. Katie Sweatman of near Beardstown and for some time they made their home in Beardstown where Mr. Hager was employed by the Burlington. They later moved to Ashland where the decedent has since farmed.
He is survived by his wife and his tow sons, Glen and Elmer and two step children, Clarence and Marguerite Sweatman and by the following brothers and sisters; Doug of Clear Lake, Charles of Sangamon Valley, Mrs. Emma Crum of Winchester, Mrs. Mary Thompson of Beardstown, Mrs. Wm. Redshaw, Barry and Eva Brannan of Virginia.
He is also survived by his step mother Mrs. Anna Hager of Beardstown.
The following brothers and sisters have preceded him, Mrs. Rose Phelps, Mrs. Clara Phelps and Willie Hager, the latter who died while quite young.

Betty R. Hagloch, 78, of Virginia, died Wednesday morning, January 24, 2007 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
She was born Feb. 2, 1928 in Red Bay, Ala; the daughter of Timothy Charles and Marietta Smith Stembridge. She married Vernon M. Hagloch on Nov. 10, 1944 in New Bern, N.C. and he preceded in death on June 9, 1985.
She is survived by three sons, Charles (wife, Jan) and Vernon (wife, Janet), both of Virginia, and Jonathan (wife, Shelley) of Naperville; three daughters, Mary Catherine (husband, George) McKennedy of Virginia, Nadine (husband, Jack) Tackitt of West Chicago, and Lee Ann (husband, Tom) Folder of Chatham; 13 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one step greatgrandchild; one brother, Jimmy Mack (wife, Barbara) Stembridge of Grantsboro, N.C.; two sisters, Maudie Slade and Dorothy (husband, Alton) Cuthrell of Grantsboro, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, William "Bud" (surviving wife, Charlotte of Grantsboro, N.C.) Stembridge; and one sister, Hattie Clement.
Mrs. Hagloch was employed as a nurse’s aide at Walker Nursing Home in Virginia, and later at Norris Hospital and Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville. She retired from Passavant Hospital Central Supply Department following many years of employment. She was a member of St. Luke’s Parish in Virginia and a devoted mother and grandmother.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Catholic Church in Virginia, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Flavilla Ham, 84, of Beardstown, died Monday morning, May 21, 2007, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
She was born March 27, 1923, in Beardstown, the daughter of John and Mazel Fletcher Cloyes. She married Corbett E. Ham on Sept. 24, 1939 in Hannibal, Mo., and he preceded her in death June 5, 2005.
She is survived by three daughters, Faye Ham and Cheri Spoon, both of Beardstown and Lori (husband, Tony) Richards of Naples; one son, Rick (wife, Cara) of Salem; six grandchildren, Chris Ham of Champaign, Ryan Ham of Salem, Jason Coats of Kentucky, Amie (husband, Tommy) Knous of Virginia, Patsy Richards of Naples and Tom Richards of Glasgow; and two great grandsons. She was preceded in death by one son Corby Jr.; and one daughter; Patsy Spoon.
Mrs. Ham attended Beardstown High School. She formerly worked for Woolworth's Dime Store in Beardstown at the candy counter, at Sears in Beardstown, and she was an Avon representative for over 20 years. Her dream was to own a woman's clothing store and she did own and operate Clothes Connection in Beardstown for many years. She also enjoyed flower gardening, reading and cooking for her family.

Carl Edwin Hammel, 1926-2007, Beardstown
Carl Edwin Hammel, 81, of Beardstown, died Monday morning, Oct. 8, 2007, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 2, 1926, in Fountain Green, the son of Ostie Robert and Eathel Simmons Hammel. He married Betty J. Lynn on Oct. 31, 1946, at First United Methodist Church in Beardstown, and she survives.
He is also survived by two daughters, Carla Savage (companion, Eric Parrish) of Beardstown and Karen Vogt of Chatham; three grandchildren, David A. (wife, Sherry) Wells of Beardstown; Jennifer Lynn (husband, Travis) Foster of Springfield and Jamie Vogt of Franklin, Tenn.; and two great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert; and three sisters, Lydia Long, Mildred Geer and Laverna Taylor.
Mr. Hammel attended school at Beardstown High School and then entered the U.S. Navy where he served during World War II from 1943 until 1946 in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Beardstown, a lifetime member of Cass Lodge 23 A.F. & A.M. He previously was employed with Schultz-Baujan Mill in Beardstown and IBEW Local 51. He retired in 1986 after 40 years of service to the City of Beardstown as sexton of the Beardstown City Cemetery. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Beardstown City Cemetery where military rites will be conducted. The family will meet with friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown with Masonic rites following the visitation. Memorials are suggested to Cass/Schuyler Area Hospice. Connie Sue Hammond, 56, of Virginia, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
She was born Nov. 3, 1951, in Alton, the daughter of Thurman William and Irene Underwood Nave. She married John Hammond in July 1992, in Jacksonville, and he preceded her in death in 1997.
She is survived by two sons, Kevin (wife, Terri Jo) Dunmire of Meredosia and Russell (wife, Cassaye) Dunmire of Chapin; one daughter, Terri Lynn (husband, Scott) Angelo of Alexander; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Vernie (wife, Brenda) Nave of Meredosia; and five sisters, Pat (husband, Artie) McDannold of Meredosia, Bea (husband, Larry) Stinson of Mount Sterling, Marilyn (husband, Tom) Floyd of Jacksonville, Carolyn Hurst of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Brenda (husband, Steve) Hall of Versailles. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Sharon Phillips and her twin sister, Bonnie (surviving husband, Richard of Meredosia) VanHyning; and one brother, Lee Nave.
Mrs. Hammond loved to cook and can vegetables from the garden. She enjoyed camping, fishing and quilting.

Marguerite Elaine Hampton, 86, of Chandlerville, died Wednesday evening, Sept. 6, 2006, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
She was born Dec. 12, 1919, in Chandlerville, the daughter of Marion Henry and Flora Gurnsey Hohimer. She married George Wade Hampton on Oct. 1, 1938, in Palmyra, Mo., and he preceded her in death Dec. 12, 1991.
She is survived by four daughters, Donna Jean (husband, Don) Whitehouse of Bloomington, Kae (husband, Darrel) Hunt and Wadine Mibb, both of Chandlerville and Ruth (husband, Wiley) Sanders of Adkins, Texas; five grandsons, Greg Gazelle of Jacksonville, Fla., Stacey Hunt of Tucson, Ariz., Marc Sanders of Houston, Matthew Sanders of Scotsdale, Ariz., and Jake Mibb of Naperville; three granddaughters, Jodi Morgan of Chesterton, Ind. Amy Mibb of Springfield and Amanda Mibb of Chandlerville; two great-granddaughters; four great-grandsons; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one sister.
Mrs. Hampton graduated from Chandlerville High School in 1937. She was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church near Chandlerville, Cass County Mental Health Board, the Cass County Home Extension and the Chandlerville Woman's Club. She retired from the Illinois Department of Public Aid in 1981.

William E. "Sonny" Hankins - 1942-2003
William E. "Sonny" Hankins, 60, of Beardstown, died early Wednesday morning, Feb. 26, 2003, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
He was born Dec. 21, 1942, in Beardstown, the son of James and Marie Dozier Hankins. He married Sadie Mobley March 27, 1982, in Beardstown and she preceded him in death Nov. 28, 1994.
He is survived by three sisters, Velma Coats, Anna Landreth, and Bettie Taylor, all of Beardstown; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Mary Brogdon and Judy Sweeten.
Mr. Hankins attended school in Beardstown. He was employed at Precision Tank and Equipment Co. in Virginia and Bill's Truck Wash in Beardstown. He enjoyed playing with his dogs and riding in his truck.

William O. "Bill" Hannel, December 14, 1924-January 23, 2008
William O. "Bill" Hannel, 83, of Arenzville, died Wednesday, January 23, 2008, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
He was born December 14, 1924 in Baylis, the son of William and Mary Evans Hannel. He married Cloetta M. Wainman on March 4, 1947 in Pittsfield and she preceded him in death on November 25, 1987. He later married Joyce B. Stoneking Lee on January 30, 1993 at St. Peter's Church in Arenzville.
Surviving are his wife Joyce Hannel of Arenzville; two children, Michele (husband, Brad) Krueger, Winchester and William "Maurice" (wife, Kim) Hannel, Rogersville, Tennessee; four stepchildren; Sue (husband, Art) Jorgenson, Galesburg, Patty Stinson and Anita (husband, Don) Coufal both of Arenzville, and Lloyd (wife, Becky) Glydewell, Springfield, Ohio; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gerald (wife, Bess) Hannel, Ashland; and four sisters; Ada Tooley, Valley City, and Ruth (husband, Bob) Dyson, Ruby (husband, Andy) Acree, and Florence Acree, all of Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Cloetta, three brothers, Bud and twins Earl and Merle, and three sisters, Verna Sanders and two sisters in infancy.
Mr. Hannel served in the U.S. Navy as a Navy Seal during World War II from 1941 until 1945 in both he European and Pacific Theatres. After his honorable discharge he resided in Tennessee where he played the guitar with is friend and country singer Conway Twitty. Mr. Hannel was employed with the railroad in Pike County and later he and his wife Cloetta owned and operated Hannel's Grocery in Arenzville. Mr. Hannel was a meat cutter in Virginia, Arenzville, and Griggsville before his employment with Oscar Mayer in Beardstown for 20 years until his retirement in 1987. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, raising rabbits and chickens, and gardening.
Memorial services were held 1 p.m. Saturday, January 26, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Arenzville with Rev. Deena Laird officiating. Burial was in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery.
Memorials have been suggested to St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Arenzville, Passavant Area Hospital, or Arenzville American Legion.
Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown were in charge of arrangements.

Anna Kruse was born in Germany October 4, 1849 and died June 1 at her late home near Arenzville. She married August Hansmeyer, March 3, 1866 and to this union nine children were born, five having died in infancy and a son, William, six years of age at the age of 29. Surviving are her husband, sons, Ed of Concord, Sam of Concord and ____? of Jacksonville. Daughters, Mrs. Aldolph Kruse of Havlin, Kansas, ten grandchildren, and sisters, Mrs. Rickie Dahman and Mrs. Katie Kyer of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
