HUBBS, James - Virginia Gazette, Sept. 18, 1903
   James , age 55, died in Iowa, Sat., the result of an accident. The funeral was in Ashland Tues. where he resided. He frequented Iowa during the threshing season. It was while fitting an engine tank at a windmill pump, that the mill blew up and injured him to the extent he died. He is survived by a wife, two daughters, son and four brothers.

HUBBS, Willis - Ashland Sentinel, June 22, 1889
   Died June 18th, Willis Hubbs, at the home of his mother near here. He was born Aug. 18, 1866. Death was due to consumption. The funeral was from the Baptist Church with burial at the Ashland cemetery.

    E. Catherine “Katy” Huffman, 82, of Virginia, IL died Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at the Walker Nursing Home in Virginia.
   She was born September 26, 1926 in Morgan County, IL; the daughter of Fred C. and Nellie Loughary Braner. She married William C. Huffman on September 14, 1946 in Jacksonville, IL and he preceded in death on April 16, 2005.
   She is survived by a son, Robert A. Huffman (wife, Kitten Lawless) of Louisville, KY; two daughters, Rebecca A. Virgin (husband, David) of rural Arenzville and Robyn A. Huffman (companion, Donna Merris) of New York, NY; six grandchildren, Rochet Huffman of Dana Point, CA, Airman Stuart Huffman, United States Air Force, Sarah Reedy (husband, Kyle) of Tuscola, Zachariah Virgin of Effingham, and Kate and Kristen Huffman, both of New York, NY; three sisters, Marie Paul of Arenzville, Ellen Arnold of Hesperia, CA, and Freddie Paul (husband, Glen) of Apple Valley, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents and ten siblings, Dale Braner, Dorotha Plank, Roy Braner, Dean Braner (surviving wife, Glenna of Virginia), Mildred Hansmeier, Frances Custer, Aileen Crawford, Robert Braner (surviving wife, Elizabeth of Las Vegas, NV), Herbert Braner, and Marvin Braner.
   A 1944 graduate of Arenzville High School, Mrs. Huffman worked at a Jacksonville book bindery prior to her marriage. She then assisted her husband with their farming operation for many years. She was a member of Virginia United Methodist Church where she has been active as a Sunday School teacher, Trustee, Administrative Board Member, and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Monroe Household Science Club, Virginia Women’s Club, Virginia Band Boosters, Triopia Sports Boosters, and Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau.
   Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, April 11, 2009 at the Virginia United Methodist Church in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Friday at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Virginia. Memorial gifts are suggested to Walker Nursing Home Activity Fund, 530 E.    Judge Alexander Huffman died at his residence in Monroe Precinct Sunday. He had been ill several months. He was a county judge.

William C. Huffman, 1926-2005, Virginia
   William C. Huffman, 78, of rural Virginia, died Saturday morning, April 16, 2005, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
   He was born May 14, 1926, in Cass County, the son of George L. and Alma Niestradt Huffman. He married Catherine Braner on Sept. 14, 1946, in Jacksonville, and she survives.
   He is also survived by one son, Robert A. (wife, Kitten Lawless) of Sterling, Colo.; two daughters, Rebecca A. (husband, David) Virgin or rural Arenzville and Robyn A. (companion, Donna Merris) of New York City; and six grandchildren, Rochet Huffman of St. Louis, Airman Stuart Huffman stationed with the USAF in Monterey, Calif., Sarah Virgin of Paris, Zachariah Virgin of Mattoon and Kate and Kristen Huffman, both of New York City. He was preceded in death by one brother, G. Lee.
   Mr. Huffman was a graduate of Arenzville High School and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He farmed in Cass County for 60 years. An accomplished organist since childhood, he has been a church organist for over 70 years, most recently in the Virginia United Methodist Church. He was a past president and a 20 year member of the Virginia School Board. He served on the committee which founded Lincoln Land Community College and was a former member and chairman of the Cass County Zoning Board. He wa a member of the Virginia United Methodist Church and the Cass Morgan Farm Bureau.
   Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Virginia United Methodist Church, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Monday at Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia, where family will meet with friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice.    Jennie Lou Hughes, 78, of Jacksonville, IL died Monday, November 24, 2008 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
   She was born September 29, 1930 in Virginia, IL; the daughter of Richard and Viola Noblitt Hughes.
   She was the last of her immediate family and is survived by four cousins, Onita Parlier of Virginia, Ida Mai Tegeder of Jacksonville, Henry Carls of Decatur, and Barbara Dodds Balzer of Virginia.
   A 1948 graduate of Virginia High School, Ms. Hughes was employed at Elliott State Bank prior to joining the Central Laborers Pension Fund office in Jacksonville where she retired in January of 1995 after 15 years of service. As a child, she attended the Virginia Church of Christ and was active in Cass County 4-H. She is a past President, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Business & Professional Women chapter in Jacksonville. She also enjoyed flower gardening and was an avid bowler participating in many leagues.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia.    George Washington Hughett was born in the state of Virginia, May 24, 1934, and died at his late home near Newsmansville Saturday. Funeral services were held Monday from the house, Rev Mr. Hale officiating and interment was made in the Pontiac burying ground. The deceased is survived by five sons, Silas and John of Jacksonville, Robert of Kansas, and Joel and William of this county, and by one daughter Mrs. Rebecca Briggs of near Chandlerville.

Joseph Wesley Hunter Sr., 1959-2007, Beardstown
   Joseph Wesley Hunter Sr., 48, of Beardstown, died Friday morning, Oct. 26, 2007, at his residence.
   He was born March 3, 1959, in Alton, the son of James W. and Glenda Hancock Hunter.
   He is survived by his mother of Beardstown; three daughters, Angela of Beardstown and Joy (companion, Justin) and Amanda (companion, Derek), both of Iowa; one son, son Joseph Jr. (companion, Sabrina) of Missouri; six grandchildren, Patience Cooper, Daltyn Waters, Nicole, Dean and Jenasis Hunter and Kaeden Tobeck; three sisters, Brenda (husband, Calvin) Anderson and Linda (husband, Gene) Griffin, both of Beardstown, and Judy (husband, Gerald) Hellman of Texas; three brothers, James and Robert, both of Beardstown, and Charles (wife, Jamie) of Indiana; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
   Mr. Hunter enjoyed being with his children, grandchildren and family. He liked to go fishing, work on cars and remodel houses. He was quite a prankster and especially loved to tease his grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from two hours prior to services Monday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent to sagerfh@casscomm.com

William Henry Huppe, 1911-2003, Arenzville
   William Henry Huppe, 92, of Arenzville, died Saturday evening, Sept. 2003, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
   He was born April 3, 1911, in Arenzville, the son of Henry F. and Lucinda Roegge Huppe. He married Nina M. Fricke on Jan. 19, 1933, in Arenzville, and she preceded him in death Aug. 15, 1993.
   He is survived by three daughters, Maxine (husband, Ronald) Lashmet of Jacksonville, Bonita (husband, Carl) Becker of Alexander and Evelyn (husband, David) Thompson of Carrollton; one son, Henry (wife, Carole) of Arenzville; 10 grandchildren, Craig Lashmet, Debra Carlson, Timothy Becker, Lucinda Knight, Marc Becker, Joni Epperson, Peggy Cleary, Curtis Thompson, Karla Huppe and Kyle Huppe; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur; and four sisters, Alva Vette, Minnie Carls, Norma Krohe and Edna Lotter.
   Mr. Huppe was a 1927 graduate of Brown's Business College in Jacksonville. He was a lifelong and faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Arenzville and farmed west of Arenzville his entire life.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church at Arenzville, with burial at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Arenzville. The family will meet friends from noon until time of services Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or the donor's choice.    Mrs. Elizabeth Huppers died quite suddenly at her home in Beardstown, Wed. night, aged 62 years. Funeral services will probably occur Sunday. The deceased was born in Germany and resided for many years near Jules, moving to Beardstown a number of years ago. She is survived by two sons, William Huppers of Beardstown, and Edward Huppers of Jules, and by four daughters, Misses Elizabeth, Ida, Jennie, and Aleta Huppers, and by her husband, Detrick Huppers.

Norman 'Dale' Huston, 1959-2008, Beardstown
   Norman "Dale" Huston, 48, of Beardstown, died Sunday evening, Feb. 3, 2008, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
   He was born May 28, 1959, in Chicago, the son of Norman Ralph and Ada Ruth Harris Huston.
   He is survived by his mother of Beardstown and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his father.
   Mr. Huston was a member of First United Methodist Church in Beardstown. He enjoyed listening to music and was an avid reader.
   Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at First Methodist Church in Beardstown with burial at a later date at Beardstown City Cemetery. Mary Phyllis Hutchings, 1925-2003, Beardstown
   Mary Phyllis Hutchings, 77, of Coconut Creek, Fla., and formerly of Beardstown, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at Hospice By The Sea in Boca Raton, Fla.
   She was born July 1, 1925, in Normal, the daughter of Roy and Goldie Marie Moulton-Leonard Watkins. She married Jack Hutchings Dec. 21, 1948, and he preceded her in death.
   She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Ann Adrian and Patricia (husband, David) Grimm; two sons, John and Steven; three grandchildren Trevor, Brandon and Nicholas, all of Florida; and several cousins.
   Mrs. Hutchings graduated from Bradley University in Peoria with a BS in Home Economics. She worked in the accounting department for several south Florida banks.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Goodwin Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hospice By The Sea in Boca Raton, Fla.
