Baird W. Mathews, 1947-2003, Beardstown
   Baird W. Mathews, 55, of Beardstown, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 14, 2003, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
   He was born Nov. 4, 1947, in Beardstown, the son of Sheldon and Margie Jamison Mathews.
He is survived by his mother of Beardstown; two sisters, Carolyn Kleinschmidt of Canton and Betsy Thurman of Beardstown; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father in 1987.
   Mr. Mathews graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1965 and entered the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam from 1965 until 1967, and then stateside until his discharge in 1969. He was a life member of the Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post 1239 in Beardstown. Mr. Mathews was formerly employed with the U.S. Geological Survey Team and Burlington-Northern Railroad. He enjoyed camping, digging crystals and thoroughly loved life.
   Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Beardstown City Cemetery, with Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post 1239 in Beardstown presenting military honors. There will be an informal visitation form 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Memorials are suggested to Cass/Schuyler Area Hospice or the American Cancer Society.    Lillie, daughter of Mrs. Louis Mathews, died at her home in Newmansville, July 26th after a lingering illness. She had taught at Circleville School this past term.

   William Mathews died at his home in Newton, Iowa, last week, age 77 years. The deceased was one of the early settlers of Cass county and went west about fifty years ago. He had been married three times, his first wife being Miss Martha Conover, a native of this county. There were the parents of three children, two of who survive who are Mrs. Eliza Fritch, residing in Iowa and Alex R Mathews of Chicago. The deceased lost his last wife the Sunday preceding his own death. He was a brother of Mrs. J.T. Robertson of this city and visited her three years ago.

Margie E. Mathews, 1923-2008, Beardstown
   Margie E. Mathews, 84, of Beardstown, died Saturday evening, Feb. 23, 2008, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
   She was born Aug. 15, 1923, in Beardstown, the daughter of Frank "Happy" and Edith Hill Jamison. She married Sheldon Mathews pm April 2, 1943, and he preceded her in death in August 1987.
   She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Kleinschmidt of Canton and Betsy Thurman of Beardstown; six grandchildren, Lisa Brooke of Dunlap, Mardi Kleinschmidt of Peoria, Joe (wife, Kathy) Kleinschmidt of Edwardsville, Travis (wife, A.J.) Mathews, Amanda Thurman and Lex (wife, Rosie) Thurman, all of Beardstown; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ben (wife, Dorothy "Pudge") Jamison of Chandlerville and Clyde (wife, Rachel) Jamison of Camden; and one sister, Norma (husband, Bud) Perkins of Harrisburg. She was preceded in death by one son, Baird; two brothers, Art and Ted Jamison; and three sisters, Helen Walthers and Mary and Florence Jamison.
   Mrs. Mathews was a graduate of Beardstown High School. She graduated from Blessing Hospital School of Nursing in 1944 and was recruited in the Army Nurses Corps during World War II. She was formerly employed at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Schmidt Memorial Hospital in Beardstown and the Beardstown Hospital. After her retirement she and her husband resided in Arkansas, where was employed as a nurse for Camp Story Girl Scout Camp for many years. She was a member of Beardstown Emblem Club 474, Guthrie-Pierce VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Beardstown and a lifelong member of Girl Scouts of he USA. She thoroughly enjoyed "going on the boat" in Peoria and Alton and treasured time spent with her children and grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Cass/Schuyler Area Hospice. Condolences may be sent to sagerfh@casscomm.com.

Betty L. Mathis 1929-1999 - Beardstown
   Betty L. Mathis, 70, of Beardstown, and formerly of Chandlerville, died Wednesday evening, October 6, 1999, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
   She was born Jan. 8, 1929 near the Hazel Dell School in Cass County, the daughter of Delbert and Ruth Lynn Cox. She married Orville M. Bartels in 1951 in Palmyra, Mo. and later married Fred F. Mathis on June 20, 1968 in Rushville.
She is survived by four sons, Gary (wife, Nancy) Bartels, David Bartels, Steve (wife, Kim) Bartels and Greg, all of Chandlerville; two daughters, Bonita Bartels of Jacksonville, Denise (husband, Don) Hamilton of Chapin; nine grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; five sisters, Thelma (husband, John) Carey of Rushville, Bonnie (husband, Gary) Abney of Thompson, Sue (husband, Jack) Fritchnitch of Morris, Linda Johnson of Chillicothe and Jean (husband, Jerry) Force of Beardstown; three brothers, Ronnie (Wife, Frankie) Cox of Festus, Mo., Larry (wife, Pat) Cox of Savanna and Art (wife, Mary) Cox of Chillicothe; several nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by two sons, Byron Bartels in infancy and Sheldon W. Bartels Sr.; two brothers, Dean Cox in infancy and Sherald Cox (surviving wife, Connie of Alsey); and one sister, Shirley Cox in childhood.
   Mrs. Mathis attended schools in Morris and Virginia and was a member of the Chandlerville Baptist Church. She was active in the family business of logging and farming for many years and also formerly owned and operated the Dew Drop Inn Tavern in Bath from 1974-1977. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Lintner-Buchanan Funeral Home in Chandlerville, with burial at the Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today, with family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Jacksonville Saints Special Olympics Team, on which her grandson was a participant.

Larry "Jake" Mathis -1945-2003 - Beardstown
   Larry "Jake" Mathis, 57, of Beardstown, died Friday evening, May 9, 2003, at his residence.
   He was born Aug. 9, 1945, in Browning, the son of Loyd W. and Eva Haffner Mathis. He married Sandra Jean Spoon May 18, 1972, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Beardstown, and she preceded him in death Jan. 2, 1999.
   He is survived by two daughters Tanya (husband, Darrell) Logan of Beardstown and Crystal Emerick of Rushville; two sons, Charles "Rocky" Frank and Timothy J. Frank, both of Beardstown; six grandchildren, Elijah Logan, Slade Logan, Paris Logan, R.J. (wife, Andrea) Frank, Zachary Frank and Austin Emerick; two brothers, Fred of Forest City and William (wife, Ruth) of Du Quoin; three sisters, Wilma Jean (husband, Carlyle) Lamb of Frederick, Norma Eddington of Beardstown and Pat Breiland of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Jim (surviving wife, Bernice Mathis of Mount Carmel).
   Mr. Mathis attended Browning Grade School and graduated from Rushville High School in the class of 1963. He was also a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Beardstown. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the American Legion Post in Beardstown. He was formerly employed with Bohn-Heat Transfer in Beardstown for 13 years and then worked for Landes Trucking in Beardstown until 1992. He enjoyed playing bingo on Tuesday and Thursday nights. He previously coached boys' Minor League Baseball in Beardstown for 18 years and he loved to attend the baseball and softball games of his grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, with burial in Beardstown City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Monday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, where the family will meet friends from 5-7 p.m. Memorials have been suggested to St. John's Lutheran Church in Beardstown or Beardstown Baseball Association.

   Philopena, wife of John Mauer of Hickory died Tuesday. She was 70 years old, leaves five children. She was buried in Wubker graveyard.
