Travis had a connection to a Cass County family
Travis Dale Merwin, 32, of Jacksonville, died Saturday Dec. 14, 2002, in rural Jacksonville.
He was born Sept. 30, 1970, in Springfield, the son of Dale R. and Lana Stoval Merwin.
He is survived by his mother, Lana Holmes of Jacksonville; his father of Chandlerville; one sister, Mary Melissa Harris of Chandlerville; maternal grandmother, Helen McBride of Springfield, Mo.; and one niece.
Mr. Merwin was a graduate of Chandlerville High School and attended Quincy Tech for one year. He worked for Burger King in Springfield for several years. He enjoyed working with computers, reading, and music.
Following cremation, memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Wells Center. Cody & Son Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.
METZMAKER, Jacob - Chandlerville Times, May 3, 1907
Jacob Metzmaker, one of our best known citizens passed away very suddenly Tuesday evening about 8:00 o'clock. He had been suffering for many weeks with a peculiar throat trouble but was able to be up and around. Tuesday evening he gradually became worse and quietly passed away, his death being due to suffocation, caused by pressure on his wind pipe. The deceased was 63 years, 3 months, and 14 days of age. He was one of our most widely known citizens, and served as village marshall for over twenty years, being first elected in 1882. He is survived by his widow; one son, Otto, of this city; and two daughters, Mrs. J.D. Milstead of Mt. Sterling and Mrs. C.R. Weaver of Jacksonville.The funeral services were held yesterday at the family residence. Rev. J.E. Bissell of the Congregational Church officiating. A large number of people from the surrounding country and neighboring towns were present at the funeral. An obituary will be given next week. Jacob Metzmaker was born in Augusta County Virginia Jan. 16, 1844, died in his home at Chandlerville, Illinois April 30, 1907. At the age of eleven years he moved with his parents to Virginia, Illinois, and in 1881 moved to Chandlerville, where he resided until his death. For more than twenty years he served as a public office, this long term of years, indicating how well his services were appreciated by his fellow townsmen. On Aug. 15, 1862, he enlisted under Capt. Berry, in Company D, 114th Ill Volunteers, at Virginia, Illinois, and was sworn in at Butler near Springfield, Ill. and until Feb. 26, 1863, faithfully served his country, when he received an honorable discharge on account of sickness. He was united in marriage on Nov. 15, 1867, to Paiscilla [Priscilla?] D. Cauby, to which union, four children were born, Mrs. J.D. Milstead of Sterling Veffie (deceased), Otto O. of Chandlerville, and Mrs. C.R. Weaver of Jacksonville, Illinois. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. George Harris, of the funeral services occurred at his house in Chandlerville May 2, 1907, Rev. J.E. bissell officiating. The flower girls were the Misses Nellie Chandler, Lottie McNeil, May Ainsworth, and Myrtis Cook. The bearers, John Phelps, Henry Workman, Lewis Cowen, Frank Carr, James Clifford, Chas. Kikendall, were old comrades, selected from the number who were in attendance at the services, the others acting as an escort. At the grave the G.A.R. ritual was observed. A number of Civil War veterans from Virginia attended the funeral. These were J.H.Clifford, C.I.Haskell, and Henry Milliner of Co. K, 33rd Ill Inf.; Henry Coleman, 3rd Ill Col. Co. C; John Wilks, of the 101st; George McDowell of the 18th; Marcus King of the 58th; Dave French of the 18th; Geo. Cunningham, Lem Simmons and Chas. Kikendall, of Co. D, 114th Ill Inf. and E.M. Dale, of the 140th Indiana Inf. Other visitors were Mesdames John Sallee, Thomas Mead,Thomas Finn, John Wilkins, George Harris, J.L. McLemon, Dave French: Misses Josephine Sallee, and Mary Harris and Messrs. William Clifford, J.G. Davis, Albert Harris, Wm. Harris, and Phil Harris all of Virginia; Mrs. Fannie Kessler of Pekin and Miss Mannie Harris of Peoria.
