John Parry, a resident six miles east of here, died last week after a brief illness. He was born in 1812.

William Parry, a truck farmer of near Bluff Springs, was killed by lightning yesterday afternoon during the storm. The team of horses were also killed. Parry was 32 and married. He lived on a farm belonging to John Clark.

Graveside funeral services for Elmer "Pete" Pate were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February14 at Beardstown City Cemetery. Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post #1239 in Beardstown gave military rites. Those participating were:
Commander Craig Stevens, Chaplain George Bell, Squad Leader Les Farwell, Color Guard Calvin Anderson, Rifle Squad Bob Wilder, Ron Summey, Brian DeLoche, Victor Smith, and Bud Carlock.
Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret 'Yvonne' Patterson, 1939-2006, Washington
Note: Margaret had a connection to a Cass County family.
Margaret "Yvonne" Patterson, 67, of Washington, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 5, 2006, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 4, 1939, in Virginia, the daughter of Paul Eugene and Marian Bernice Schone Stock. She married Stanley K. Patterson on Aug. 16, 1957, in Beardstown, and he survives.
She is also survived by her mother of Arenzville; two daughters, Tamara Kay Patterson of Peoria, and Deborah (husband, Lee) Langeberg of Washington; one grandson, Ryan Wright of Las Vegas; and eight brothers, Richard E. (wife, Mary Jane) and Roger (wife, Karen) Stock, both of Virginia, Phillip H. (wife, Leah) Stock of Peoria, Kenneth (wife, Vickie) Stock of Woodson, Gary (wife, Deanna) and David (wife, Julie) Stock, both of Beardstown, Byron (wife, Sally) Stock of Arenzville and Chris (wife, Scherrie) Stock of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by her father.
Mrs. Patterson was a Surgical Technician at OSF St. Francis Medical Center and later with Dr. Paulson for six years. She most recently worked for Dr. Reid Hansen in Peoria. She had been a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Beardstown. She also loved to travel.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Deiters Funeral Home in Washington, with private burial. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today and one hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Amyloidosis Research Center in Boston. Willard Peck, 1920-2008, Arenzville
Willard Peck, 87, of Arenzville, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at Linden Grove Nursing Home in Menomonee Falls, Wis.
He was born Aug. 14, 1920, in rural Arenzville, the son of Lyman and Julia Meyer Peck. He married Dorothy Eileen Roegge on May 16, 1943, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arenzville, and she survives.
He is also survived by two daughters, Janice (husband, Roger) Heintz of Brookfield, Wis., and Elaine Peck of Spring, Texas; one son, Dennis (wife, Renee) of Fruita, Colo,; seven grandchildren, Matthew Heintz, Rebecca Ligrow, Peter Heintz, D. J. Peck, Jamie, Melissa, and Michael Peck; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rose Marie (husband, Harold) Croxton of Lebanon, Pa., and Idamae Kilbane of Berea, Ohio; three brothers, Richard (wife, Mercedes) Peck of El Cajon, Calif., Truman of California, and Robert (wife, Lorraine) of Rockville, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gilbert and Benjamin; and one sister, Lena Ruth Peck.
Mr. Peck owned and operated Peck’s Standard service station in Arenzville from 1945 until his retirement in 2006. He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Arenzville and served as an usher for over 30 years. He was a school bus driver for 38 years and served as village clerk of Arenzville for 24 years. He was a member of the Lutheran Laymen’s League.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arenzville, with burial at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Arenzville. Family will meet friends from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at the Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church. Virgil D. Perry Jr., 1939-2007, Beardstown
Virgil D. Perry, Jr. 67, of Rushville, and formerly of Beardstown, died Tuesday morning, July 24, 2007 at Sarah D. Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
He was born Aug. 2, 1939 in Beardstown, the son of Virgil D. Perry, Sr. and Maxine Gilmore Perry. He married Glenda E. Kilby on May 23, 1975, in Virginia, and she preceded him in death Sept. 16, 2000.
He is also survived by one daughter, Heather Perry Childers of Rushville of Rushville; two grandchildren, Dayton James Childers and Emma Elaine Weber; one sister, Vicki (husband, Tim) Timmerman of Glasgow; one brother, Fred Perry of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Perry was a 1957 graduate of Beardstown High School. He Joined the U. S. Navy in 1957 and was honorably discharged in 1960. He spent his entire work career with Central Illinois Public Service Company, beginning in 1960 on the Wester Division spray crew. In 1964 he became a Lighting Engineer in the Western Division office at Beardstown. In 1966, he transferred to the work unit area, first as a meter reader in Canton, then to the line clearance crew in Petersburg, and finally to the line crew in Virden. In 1969, he accepted the position of Distribution Engineer (electric) in the Western Division Office in Beardstown. In 1977, he was promoted to the position of District Superintendent of the Petersburg District Operations, and in 1991, was promoted to Area Superintendent of the Beardstown Area Operations in Beardstown, a position that he held until his retirement in 1995. One of his most important positions at CIPS was mentoring to young impressionable engineers and employees, by teaching not only the importance of hard work, but also the equal importance of living each day to the fullest. That position is earned through respect, not appointed, that very few people attain. He was also member of the Beardstown Elks Club.
Mr. Perry has donated his body to medical science. There will be a memorial service held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Virginia. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association. Condolences may be left at www.buchanancody.com.

George J. Petefish 1920-2006 - Virginia
George J. Petefish, 85, of Virginia, died Sunday morning, May 7, 2006 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
He was born July 8, 1920 in rural Virginia, the son of Glen and Lenora Carls Petefish. He married Edith M. McMahan in 1978 in Virginia, and she survives in Jacksonville.
He is survived by one daughter from a previous marriage, Debra K. "Debbie" (husband, Ramon) Cabrera of Brenham, Texas; two step daughters, Belinda (husband, Wayne) Hutchins of Chatham and Diane (husband, Bob) Cooley of Jacksonville; two stepsons, William (wife, Olga) McMahan of Mesa, Ariz., and Donald (wife, Courtney) McMahan of Jacksonville; 11 stepgrandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and one niece. He was preceded in death by one brother, Glen C. (surviving wife, Marilyn Petefish of Virginia).
Mr. Petefish was a 1938 graduate of Virginia High School and attended Illinois College in Jacksonville. He served from 1943-1945 as a sergeant with the US Army during World War II. He farmed in Cass County for a few years prior to working as an insurance agent for Country Companies in the Pleasant Hill area. He later returned to Virginia where he was a partner with Ted Harrison Oil Company, a Phillips 66 Distributor and retail tire marketer. He was later elected Cass County Clerk, serving 12 years prior to his retirement. Following retirement, he served on the Cass County Board, as a member of the Cass County E911 Committee, and was active in other civic endeavors.
Mrs. Petefish was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Virginia which he had served as an Elder. A dedicated mason, he was a 61 year member of Virginia Lodge #544 A.F. & A.M., Adah Robinson Chapter 276 O. E. S., the Valley of Springfield Consistory, and Ansar Shrine. An active member of the Cass County Democratic Party, he also was a member of Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau, American Legion Post 258, and a past president of the former Virginia Kiwanis Club.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Virginia, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. today at Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia, where the family will meet friends from 5-7 p.m. Masonic services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church of Virginia. Ward C. Petefish, 1923-2008, Ashland
Ward C. Petefish, 84, of rural Ashland, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
He was born June 7, 1923, in Literberry, the son of Jesse L. and Jean Caldwell Petefish. He married Marcella Pauline Hinman on Feb. 2, 1945, in Ashland, and she preceded in death on Dec. 25, 1981.
He is survived by one daughter, Doris J. (husband, Keith) Gregory of Ashland; four sons, J. Alan (wife, Vicky) of Festus, Mo., Donald J. (wife, Jennifer), Ronald R. (wife, Debra), and Bradley E., all of Ashland; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard L. Sr. (wife, Sharon) of Champaign; two sisters, Lois (husband, Albert) Yancy of Springfield and Mary Lou (husband, Bob) Newell of St. Louis; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Sara (surviving husband, Raymond of Springfield) Allen; and one niece.
Mr. Petefish was a 1940 graduate of Ashland High School and a grain and livestock farmer in the Ashland area for many years. He was a member of Berea Christian Church where he served as Deacon Emeritus. He formerly served on the Ashland School Board and as a 4-H leader for many years. He enjoyed fishing and watching his family participate in local sporting events, but his greatest joy came from spoiling his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Berea Christian Church, south of Prentice, with burial in Ashland Cemetery. Charles Edward Petri Jr., 83, of Beardstown, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 16, 2007, at Heritage Manor East in Beardstown.
He was born August 27, 1924, in Beardstown, the son of Charles E. "Rex" Sr. and Helen Crow Petri. He married Lois M. Halliday on March 8, 1947, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown, and she survives.
He is also survived by two daughters, Judy Kay (husband, Doug) Anable of Everson, Wash., and Linda G. (husband, Jeff) Hanold of Mount Sterling; four grandchildren, Mike Hawk, Susan Isom, John Rogers an Adam Petri; several great-grandchildren: two sisters, Dorothy "Pudge" (husband, Ben) Jamison of Chandlerville and Mary Lou Wandless of Vienna, Va.; and several nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by one grandson, Robert Lee Hawk; and two brothers, Don (surviving wife, Shirley of Decatur) and Jerry.
Mr. Petri graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1942 and then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a signalman. Upon returning to Beardstown he was employed with Harre Auto Supply in Beardstown and later owned and operated Petri Auto Supply in Rushville. He then was employed with several barge companies including Ohio River Company, Federal Barge Company, and he retired from Midland Barge Company as a chief engineer. He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church and the American Legion in Beardstown, a lifetime member of Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post 1239 in Beardstown, and a past member of Cass Lodge A.F. and A.M. 23, Ansar Shrine, and Illinois Valley Shrine. His favorite pastimes include fishing with his grandkids, duck, squirrel, rabbit and mushroom hunting, vegetable gardening, playing pool and telling jokes.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery where military honors will be held. The family will meet with friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. following visitation.
