Robert Rankin, 1917-2007, Beardstown
   Robert B. Rankin, 89, of Beardstown, died Saturday morning, Feb. 24, 2007, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
   He was born Aug. 14, 1917, in Virden, the son of Arthur and Ida Ward Rankin. He married Mary Jean Bowsher on Dec. 21, 1941, and she preceded him in death in December 1952. He later married Anna Heyworth on Oct. 8, 1955, and she survives.
   He is also survived by two sons, Robert (wife, Harriet) of Beardstown and Richard (wife, Beth) of Bella Vista, Ark.; one stepson, William Heyworth of Springfield; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Russell (wife, Millie) of La Crosse, Wis.; one sister, Margaret Fite of Green Valley, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Allen and William.
   Mr. Rankin graduated from Virden High School in the class of 1935 and completed a correspondence course in general business from Alexander Hamilton Institute in New York City. In July 1935, he began his employment with Central Illinois Public Service Company as a meter reader in Virden. From July 1941 until October 1945 he served in the U.S. Army in the 42nd Engineers Construction Battalion. He assisted in building radar stations in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. Upon his discharge, he returned to Virden and continued working for CIPS. In October 1956, he was transferred to Pittsfield, and in 1962 he became the District Superintendent for CIPS in Beardstown. From 1973 until 1978, he served as District Superintendent in Quincy and then returned to Beardstown where he continued his service until his retirement in 1982. He was employed a total of 47 years with CIPS. He was a member of Virden Masonic Lodge and he also served in the Girard Masonic Lodge. His community involvement included Virden City Council; Pittsfield Chamber of Commerce and Lion's Club; Saukee Area Council of Boy Scouts of America; Beardstown Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce and United Way; Cass County Board of Supervisors and Cass County Draft Board. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Beardstown.
   Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Congregational Church in Beardstown. Cremation rites will be accorded. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Virden City Cemetery. The family will meet friends one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church. William E. Ratliff, 1932-2008, Ashland
   William E. Ratliff, 75, of Ashland, Illinois died Sunday morning, Jan. 27, 2008, at his residence.
   He was born April 25, 1932, in Ashland, the son of Carl A. and Inez M. Geuder Ratliff. He married Lorene Beard on Nov. 29, 1953, in Pleasant Plains, Illinois, and she survives.
   He is also survived by four sons, William J. (wife, Keri), Larry (wife, Anna), Ronnie (wife, Angie) and Michael (wife, Jennifer), all of Ashland; four daughters, Rita (husband, Tom) Devlin, Vicky (husband, Dwayne) Farmer, Linda (husband, John) Ring, and Ann (husband, Billy) Carter, all of Ashland; 19 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Mentgen of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Pete (surviving wife, Virginia of Winchester) and Rich (surviving spouse, Gerry (current husband, Ed Bruce of Moline); three sisters, Eula Mae Winner, Helen Yancy and Mildred Woodrum.
   Mr. Ratliff worked at Standard Concrete Pipe of Springfield for 20 years, before becoming a union carpenter through Local 16 in Springfield, retiring in 1994. He then worked as a school bus driver for the A-C Central School district until his health began to fail. He attended the Church of Christ in Ashland and loved to fish and camp in his spare time.
   Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home of Ashland, with burial in the Ashland City Cemetery. Geraldine M. Raymond - 1922-2003 - Virginia
   Geraldine M. Raymond, 80, of Virginia, died Saturday evening, May 31, 2003 at Heritage Manor East in Beardstown.
   She was born July 26, 1922 in Payson, the daughter of Ray A. and Elsie Pearl Dixon Copeland. She married Gerald Lee Raymond on June 4, 1940, in Fort Madison, Iowa and he preceded in death April 8, 1985.
   She is survived by one son, Roger Raymond of Bushnell; one daughter, Jean Hager of Virginia; seven grandchildren, Tim Hager of Marathon, Fla., Kim Hays of Bowling Green, Mo., Bruce Raymond of Clayton, Ind., Richard Raymond of Coatesville, In., Lynn Walker of Beardstown, Joanne Pontifex of Macomb, and Catherine Ellis of Plainfield, Ind.; 15 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Gladys Dennis of Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by twin grandsons, Christopher and Jeffery Raymond in infancy; one brother, Roy A. Copelan; and one sister, Zelma Shryack.
   Mrs. Raymond was a graduate of Plymouth High School. She moved to Virginia with her husband in 1955 to manage West Food Store on the Virginia square. She and her husband later purchased the store, which became Raymond's Red & White Food Store, where they worked until retirement in 1977. She was a member of the Virginia United Methodist Church and the former Virginia American Legion Post Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening and harvesting tomatoes and fruit.
   Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Lucille Reed, 1910-2008, Chandlerville
   Lucille Reed, 97, of Chandlerville, died Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 6, 2008, at Walker Nursing Home in Virginia.
   She was born Dec. 20, 1910, in the home she still lived in, the daughter of Ralph and Hilma Turner Cook. She married Jewel Reed on Sept. 11, 1930, in Virginia, and he preceded her in death Dec. 27, 1981.
   She is survived by two daughters, Mary Louise (husband, John) Goetz and Patricia (husband, Earl) Williams, both of Chandlerville; one son, James (wife, Dorothy) of Chandlerville; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; 16 great-greatgrandchildren; and one sister, Annabelle Cloninger of Chandlerville. She was preceded in death by one brother, Russell Cook.
   Mrs. Reed was a member of the Chandlerville Christian Church and attended Chandlerville High School. She was a homemaker all of her life. She loved her horses and dogs and her acres of beautiful flowers and garden in the summer. Her neighbors were her most valued friends.
   Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Lintner-Hurley Funeral Home in Chandlerville, with burial at Pontiac Cemetery near Chandlerville. Elmer C. Reichert, 1925-2005 - Virginia
   Elmer C. Reichert, 79, of Virginia, died Friday morning, May 27, 2005, at the Walker Nursing Home in Virginia.
   He was born Sept. 19, 1925, in Bluff Springs, the son of Elmer S. and Core Oetgen Reichert. He married Colleen Drake in 1947 in Bluff Springs, and she preceded in death in 1960. He then married Bertha Morgan in 1963 in Jacksonville, and she preceded in death in 1973. He then married Ruth Ginder Masten in 1975 in Literberry, and she preceded in death in January 2005.
   He is survived by three sons, Allen (wife, Cathy) of rural Jacksonville; Harry James (wife, Mila) of Franklin and Larry Wayne (wife, Cathy) of Jacksonville; one daughter, Janice Marie (husband, Tom) Winters of Jacksonville; one stepson, Nyle (wife, Monica) Masten of Arenzville; two step-daughters, Marilyn (husband, Norman) Siegle of Jacksonville and Venita (husband, William R.) Kilby of rural Virginia; 14 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandchild; two sisters, Hazel Taylor of Ames, Iowa, and Lorene Rogers of Clinton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Norma Lee Virgin; one grandson; one stepgrandson; four brothers, Floyd, Roy, Carlos and Norman Reichert; and two sisters, Annabelle Jokisch and Dorothy Reichert.
   Mr. Reichert was formerly engaged in farming and providing custom bulldozer work. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He wa a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Virginia.

Harold C. Reichert, 1912-2004, Moberly, Mo.
   Harold C. Reichert, 91, of Moberly, Mo., and formerly of Winchester and Pittsfield, died Saturday afternoon Feb. 21, 2004, at North Village Park Care Center in Moberly.
   He was born April 14, 1912, in Beardstown, the son of the late William Fred and Katie Alice Guildersleeve Reichert. He married Ruth B. Gilman on May 22, 1946, in Springfield, and she survives in Moberly.
   He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Mildred Reichert of Moberly and Miranda Reichert of New Braunfels, Texas; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.
   Mr. Reichert served in the U.S. Army in Battery A 171st Cavalry as an artillery mechanic. He saw active duty in W.W. II in the campaign of Gaudalcanal, New Guinea and Northern Solomon Islands. He received three Bronze Battle Stars and five overseas bars. He worked for Sears and then as a Dental Courier Service out of Chicago. After retiring to Winchester he worked at the Winchester High School. He was always active, and he loved to travel. His greatest love was helping others, especially children.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester, with burial at the Winchester City Cemetery, where military services will be conducted.    Herman G. Reichert, 83 years, of Virginia, IL died Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at Regency Hospital in Greenville, SC.
   He was born August 22, 1923 in Bluff Springs, IL; the son of Oscar Grover and Rose Amelia Ruppel Reichert. He married J. Marie Charles on March 14, 1942 in Hannibal, MO and she preceded in death on December 25, 1988.
   He is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Albers (husband, Raymond) of Simpsonville, SC; two sons, H. Gary Reichert (wife, Barb) of Lincoln and Stephen Reichert of Virginia; six grandchildren, Stacey Albers (wife, Pam) of Fountain Inn, SC, Heather Reichert of Carpentersville, Michael Reichert of Virginia, Eric Reichert of Lincoln, Brandon Reichert of Springfield, and Breanna Reichert of Virginia; two great grandchildren; a brother, Roscoe Reichert (wife, Helen) of Bluff Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Alvin "Barney" Reichert (surviving wife, Dolores of Virginia).
   Mr. Reichert attended Warrior School and graduated from Beardstown High School in 1941. He served with the US Army from June 7, 1943 until January 28, 1946 stationed in the European Theater. He worked for Burlington Railroad for 8 ˝ years and was a mail carrier for the US Postal Service for 26 ˝ years. He also farmed with his brothers, Roscoe and Barney, for several years. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Virginia and the Virginia American Legion Post. A charter member, he was formerly active in the Virginia Lions Club.
   Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at the Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia with burial and military honors at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia.    Funeral services for Herman G. Reichert were held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday Feb. 20, 2007, at Massie Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia with the Rev. Jill Flynn officiating. The organist was Eileen Fiedler and music included "Just As I Am," "Amazing Grace" and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again." Pallbearers were Jamie Reichert, Tom Pettit, Jeff, Andy and David Little and Mike Miller. Honorary pallbearers were Gary Blum, Lloyd Schroeder and John and Jeremy Dotzert. Burial was at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia with military rites conducted by Beardstown VFW Post 1239.

Phyllis D. Reichert - 1914-2003 - Bluff Springs, Illinois
   Phyllis D. Reichert, 88, of Bluff Springs, died Saturday morning, Feb. 8, 2003 at her residence.
   She was born Feb. 28, 1914, in Virginia, the daughter of Rudolph and Bessie Trussell Jokisch. She married Roy Reichert March 8, 1936, at the home of her parents in Bluff Springs, and he preceded her in death. Jan. 16, 1996.
   She is survived by one son, Randal (wife, Sue) of Bluff Springs; one daughter, Kathy McMurl (companion, Terry Buhlig) of Bluff  Springs; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Keith Jokisch.
   Mrs. Reichert graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1931. She also graduated from Decatur Macon County Hospital School of Nursing in 1935 as a registered nurse. She was an active member of the Bluff Springs United Methodist Church, Beardstown Woman's Club, and the First National Bank of Beardstown Premiere Choice Club. She enjoyed spending every Tuesday with the "Girls' Club" and going out to eat. She was a frequent writer for Capper's Weekly and delighted in spending many hours working puzzles, reading, and following her favorite baseball team, the St. Louis Cardinals. She cherished the time spent with her family and friends.
   Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Bluff Springs United Methodist Church, with burial at the Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 4:30-7 p.m. today at the Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Her remains will also lie in state at the church one hour prior to the funeral service on Monday.    Violet L. Reichert, 97, of Beardstown, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 5, 2007, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
   She was born April 24, 1910, in rural Adams County, the daughter of Richard and Lydia Krohe Launer. She married Floyd Reichert on Feb. 19, 1933, in Bluff Springs, and he preceded her in death June 6, 1961.
   She is survived by one brother, Earl (wife, Dorothy) Launer of Beardstown; and several nieces and nephews, including nephew and caregiver, Donnie Harris of Beardstown. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Gilbert (surviving wife, Fairy of Beardstown), Ralph, Harvey, Marvin and Everett Launer; and two sisters, Ruth Spoon and Ruby Hacker.
   Mrs. Reichert was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs. She was previously employed with the Beardstown Hospital for 20 years and Illinois Glove Factory in Beardstown for seven years.
   Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. John's Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs.

Alma J. Reid, 1907-2003, Virginia
   Alma J. Reid, 96, of Virginia, died Thursday morning, Oct. 9, 2003, at her residence.
   She was born June 4, 1907, in Paragould, Ark., the daughter of William Lewis and Sylvia M. Barr Dunnagan. She married Tribble McAnally and he preceded her in death in 1929. She later married Kenneth E. Reid and he preceded her in death in 1969.
   She is survived by two granddaughters, Sarah (husband, Scott) Mefford of rural Virginia and Becky (husband, Clyde) Foret of New Orleans; one grandson, Donald L. Glossop Jr. of New Orleans; two great-grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Peggy Glossop; and one grandson, Donald Scott Glossop.
   Mrs. Reid was involved several years with a variety of businesses, including owning and operating a nursing home in Havana, later established a restaurant in Beardstown (now known as the Star Cafe') and finally owning and operating Virginia Furniture Mart in Virginia.
   Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Monday at Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia, where the family will meet friends from 5-7 p.m. Monday. REISER, Alvena D. - November 11, 1909 - July 10, 2008
Alvena D. Reiser, 98, of Springfield died Thursday, July 10, 2008 at Menard Convalescent Center in Petersburg.
   Alvena was born November 11, 1909, in Philadelphia, IL the daughter of John and Mary Finn Devlin. She married Leo Reiser on June 14, 1938 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Ashland, IL. He preceded her in death on October 23, 1995.
   Mrs. Reiser is survived by one daughter, Rosemary (Michael) Stepner of San Diego, CA; three sons, Tom (Ginny) Reiser of Petersburg, Bob (Martha) Reiser of Petersburg, and Bill (Mary) Reiser of Concord, CA; sixteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by two very special cousins, Mary Margaret Devlin of Ashland and Sister Jonette Devlin, O.S.F. of Greenbay, WI.
   She was raised in St. Augustine Catholic Church in Ashland, Il., was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Havana, St. Agnes Catholic Church in Springfield, and St. Peter Catholic Church in Petersburg. After her mother's death in 1917 Alvena was enrolled at Sacred Heart Academy as a fourth grader. She boarded there during the week and returned home for the weekends. She graduated from SHA in 1927. In the fall of 1928 she began her studies at Western Illinois State Teachers College in Macomb. She graduated in June of 1931 with an associate degree in Education. In 2001 Alvena was inducted into the SHG Hall of Fame and was acknowledged as the oldest living Sacred Heart boarder. During the presentation she was described as a 'woman of great faith' who had helped many others by sharing her 'wisdom, love and monetary assistance.'
   Alvena taught for four years at Fairview Country School in Sangamon County. She then taught at Gurney school in Cass County for five years. She and Leo were co-owners of Reiser Grain Co. in Greenview from 1962 through 1990.
   Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday July 15, 2008 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Ashland, Father Bob Jallas will be officiating. Visitation will be held Monday July 14, 2008 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and also from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg.
   Burial will be in St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery in Ashland.
   Memorial contributions may be made to St. Agnes Catholic Church, St. Augustine Catholic Church. St. Peter Catholic Church, or to the organization of the donor's choice.

   Mrs. Andrew Reither Dies at Hospital
   Death was result of injuries received in fall several weeks ago. Deceased was born in this city and lived here her entire life, was well known. Anna Boyd Reither was born in Virginia, Illinois in the month on April, 1847, a daughter of Charles and Susan Boyd, who were among the earliest settlers of this county and her entire life was spent in this city. In 1870 she was united in marriage to Andrew Reither. Six children were born to the, three of whom died in infancy and two died with diptheria at the age of six and seven years. She is survived by one son, Albert Reither, of this city, together with her husband, two brothers, Charles and Gideon Boyd, one sister, Mrs. Samuel Charles and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Reither united with the local Church of Christ in early life and remained a member until her death at Springfield, last Thursday evening. About two weeks ago Mrs. Reither fell in the yard at her home and fractured a hip bone. Previous to that time she had been a great sufferer from the effects of a fall sustained about two years ago and her condition was such that she could not rally from the operation performed at the hospital. Funeral services were held from the Church of Christ, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. C.E. French officiating. Interment was in Walnut Ridge cemetery.

Richard "Dick" Reller, January 21, 1939-July 22, 2007
   Richard "Dick" Reller, 68, of Beardstown, died on Sunday, July 22, 2007, at McDowell Hospital in Marion, North Carolina.
   He was born January 21, 1939 in Beardstown to the late Elmer F. Reller and Annetta M. Henderson Reller.
   Dick worked with his father and brother as a general contractor for over 52 years until he retired. He was past president of Beardstown Boys Baseball Association, past president and district director of Beardstown Jaycees and past exalted ruler of Beardstown Elks Lodge 1007. Dick also coached Pony League and was instrumental in hosting the World Series (Pony League) in Beardstown. He served 39 years as a volunteer fireman, was a member of Elk's Fireworks Committee and was president of IL Elks Bowling Association. For many years, Dick was an avid duck hunter, bowler, and enjoyed vacations in North Carolina.
   In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one brother, Jack Reller, and a sister, Hazel Jeanne Beard.
   Surviving are his wife, Billie Ruth Oleson Reller; four sons, Keith (wife, Angela) Reller, Scott (wife, Ginny) Reller, Todd (wife, Andrea) Reller, and J.C. (wife, Jennifer) Reller; one daughter, Sallie Reller (companion, Bernie); one brother, Robert Reller; fifteen grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   The family will celebrate Dick's life at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 2007, at Fairway Hills Golf Course & Country Club, Route 125, Virginia.
   Memorials are suggested to the Elks Fireworks Fund or the charity of the donor's choice.

   Died at his residence in Bluff Springs, the 1st, J.K. Rew. He was 30 years old and death was due to consumption. He leaves his wife, two children, mother, brother and sister. The funeral was Sun. at the residence of Oliver Decker and interment was in Beardstown. Services were by Rev. Hornbeck of Griggs Chapel.

   A. Lee Reynolds, 81, of Virginia, died Sunday evening, February 24, at his residence.
   He was born September 7, 1920, in Cass County (near Philadelphia), the son of Arthur R. and Eva O. Jokisch Reynolds. He married Carrie Mae Sidebottom on August 28, 1950, in Pochantas, AK, and she survives.
   He also is survived by two sons, Don Reynolds (wife Kay) of Virginia and Bill Reynolds of Virginia; two grandsons; twin granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.
   He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother in infancy.
Mr. Reynolds was a life long resident of Virginia and graduated from Virginia High School in 1938. He worked for the Virginia Gazette prior to serving with the US Navy from 1942-1946, stationed at the Panama Canal. Following World War II he purchased the Peterson Service Station on the square in Virginia, which is still operated today by his two sons. He opened a second gas station and convenience store on the south end of Virginia in 1982 and continued to work then until August 2001.
   A devoted mason, Mr. Reynolds was a long time member of Virginia Lodge #544 AF & AM where he was past master, recently installed again as Worshipful Master, and had served as the lodge's secretary for 27 years. He was also a member of the Adah Robinson Chapter #276 Order of Eastern Star, Ansar Shrine, Valley of Springfield Scottish Rite and was named an honorary member of several area masonic lodges. In addition, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Virginia and a sponsor and avid fan of the Reynolds & Sons softball team.
   Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia.
   Masonic services were conducted at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial gifts are suggested to Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice, Virginia Park System or Virginia Masonic Lodge #544.
Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Chuck Reynolds - 1954-2003 - Chandlerville
   Chuck Reynolds, 48, of Chandlerville, died Thursday morning, Jan. 16, 2003, at his residence.
   He was born Feb. 1, 1954, in Jacksonville, the son of Wayne L. and Moneta Collins Reynolds.He married Sheila Barrett July 6, 1997, at Mount Olive Baptist Church in rural Chandlerville, and she survives.
   He is also survived by his mother, Moneta Bell of Springfield; one son, Dan Reynolds of Chandlerville; one daughter, Erynn Reynolds of Chandlerville; one stepson, Michael Rogers of Virginia; one stepdaughter, Ronica Rogers of Chandlerville; one great-aunt; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his father.
   Mr. Reynolds was a 1972 graduate of Chandlerville High School and was owner and operator of Reynolds Taxidermy for over 20 years in Chandlerville. He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, a Master Mason, an avid hunter and a member of the NRA.
   Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Olive Cemetery, east of Chandlerville. Friends may call after 3 p.m. today at Lintner-Buchanan Funeral Home in Chandlerville, with family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Mount Olive Baptist Church or an Education Fund for Erynn and Dan Reynolds.
