Margaret Ann Rice - 1937-2003 - Beardstown
   Margaret Ann Rice, 65, of Beardstown, died Monday afternoon, June 2, 2003 at her residence.
She was born Dec. 12, 1937, in Beardstown, the daughter of Benjamin Franklin and Margaret Elizabeth Bell Carnahan. She married George Robert "Bob" Rice May 26, 1959, in Beardstown, and he survives.
   She is also survived by three sons, Eric Brian (companion, Mary Peterman) Jon Michael (companion, Elizabeth Coats), and Christopher Patrick (wife, Christina), all of Beardstown; seven grandchildren, Jessica Rice-Medina (husband, Beta), Jon Michael Rice II, Ashley Rice, Justice Rice, Tanner Rice, Sarah Coats and Aaron Coats, all of Beardstown; three brothers, Ben (wife, Carol) Carnahan of Oakwood, Thomas G. (wife, Doris) of Galesburg and Robert H. (wife, Dana) Carnahan of Effingham; and one sister, Elizabeth Jan (husband, Merle) Ring of Rushville. She was preceded in death by her parents.
   Mrs. Rice graduated from Beardstown High School in 1955, where she was very active in the Girls Athletic Association, chorus, and was an all-state selection in band. While attending BHS she worked at Fergie's, a popular hang out for teens in the 1950's. After graduation, she attended Julia F. Burnham School of Nursing in Champaign, where she graduated in 1958. After graduation, she studied mental disorders in Anna, at the State Hospital. She continued her education throughout her nursing career. She worked at Schmidt Memorial Hospital in Beardstown from 1959 to 1983 where she was an obstetrics nurse and taught Lamaze. She also worked in the Emergency Room. She helped to deliver numerous babies from the Beardstown area. She was a floor supervisor at St. John's Hospital from 1983 to 1996 and also served as a director of Nursing at Heritage Manor in Beardstown.
   Mrs. Rice taught children's Sunday school at the First United Methodist Church in Beardstown during the 1960's and 1970's, and was also involved recently in the Sunday school program at the Beardstown Worship Center where she attended services. She was a volunteer Den Mother of Cub Scouts, Brownie Scouts and 4-H from 1970 through 1978. She was active in American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and many other organizations and clubs. She decorated cakes for weddings, birthdays and special occasions. She was not only a nurse throughout her life, she was very busy minded. She owned and operated ABC Ceramics from 1973 until 1983. She was a certified Duncan Ceramics instructor who taught many Beardstown children the art of ceramics. She also co-owned and operated with her sister, Jan Ring, the craft and antique shop, "Especially 4 You" located in downtown Beardstown, where she also offered Watkins, Avon and House of Lloyd products. She helped coordinate the "Beardstown Block Watch Program" in 2001. She was involved with the start of "A Safe House Program for Children" in 2002 and was recently given an award by the VFW Post 1239 for her years of service to the safety of children in the community of Beardstown. She was very proud of her Irish heritage she had learned from her father. He taught her that her family roots came from Antrium, a city on the coast of Ireland. She deeply loved her family and enjoyed raising her Irish named children. Everyone felt very welcomed in her home.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Goodwin Funeral Home of Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Russell Edwin Richard, 1944-2007, Chandlerville
   Russell Edwin Richard, 62, of Chandlerville, died Friday, March 15, 2007, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
   He was born Oct. 29, 1944, in Chandlerville, the son of Howard and Thelma Kirchner Richard. He married Cheryl Simmons on Aug. 3, 1968, in Virginia, and she survives.
   He is survived by one son, Rusty (wife, Beverly) of Perry; two daughters, Melissa (husband, Matt) Kaler and Sara Richard, both of Chandlerville; six grandchildren; three sisters, Adah (husband, Bud) Johnson, Helen (husband, Clyde) Shoemaker and Faye Richard, all of Chandlerville; three brothers, Danny (wife, Joyce) of Maquoin, Roland (wife, Thelma) of Chandlerville and Howard "Silver" (companion, Shirley) of Bath; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.
   Mr. Richard worked in maintenance at Pactiv in Jacksonville for the past 14 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from 1962-1966, part of the service was in Vietnam. He was a graduate of Chandlerville High School.

Vernon Richards - 1981-2003 - Virginia
   David Vernon "Vernon" Richards, 22 years, of Virginia, died Friday afternoon, Apr.11, 2003 in rural Virginia.
   He was born Feb. 24, 1981 in Springfield, the son of David A. Richards and Vickie E. Cox Richards.
   He is survived by his mother of Virginia; his father of Jacksonville; his brother, Daniel of Virginia; his maternal grandmother, Leota Cox of Virginia; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, James David Cox; his paternal grandmother, Edna Mae McKinney; and his paternal grandfather, George Arthur Richards.
   Mr. Richards was employed at Scotty's Auto Parts in rural Virginia. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and outdoor activities. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and was fond of Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Nancy Bernice Richards, 1917-2007, Beardstown
   Nancy Bernice Richards, 89, of Beardstown, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at Heritage Manor East in Beardstown.
   She was born June 30, 1917, in Meredosia, the daughter of Edward and Anna Dickman Bauser. She married Thomas R. Richards on March 20, 1936, in Beardstown, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 1996.
   She is survived by two sons, Duane (wife, Shirley) of Browning and Alfred (wife, Janet) of Beardstown; two daughters, Geneva (husband, James) Taylor of Fayetteville, N.C., and Alice Bettis of Taylorville; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Arthur (wife, Joann) Bauser, Lawrence (wife, Velma) Bauser and Albert (deceased wife, Frances) Bauser, all of Beardstown; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Ronnie; three grandsons, Tom, Marty and Michael Richards; and one sister, Della Briggs.
   Mrs. Richards was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed listening to country music, dancing and playing bingo. She was also dedicated to caring for her dogs, cats and flowers.
   Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Betty Leona Riley - 1928-2003 - Virginia
   Betty Leona Riley, 74, of Virginia, died Thursday morning, May 22, 2003 at her residence.
   She was born July 12, 1928 in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Carl H. and Elta Delancy Johnson. She married Paul M. Riley Feb. 28, 1949 in Arkansas and he survives.
   She is also survived by five sons, Walter Riley of Orlando, Fla., Alan (wife, Colleen) of Goffstown, N.H, Donald (wife, Donna) of Virginia, Edward (wife, Deb) of Waukesha, Wis., and Carl (wife, Sharon) of Smithfield; three daughters, Susan (husband, Jim) Shelts and Karen (husband, Rodney) Simonds, both of Jacksonville, and Beverly Bencher of Virginia; eight grandchildren, Kate and Kim Riley of Goffstown, N.H, Paul and David Riley of Virginia, Bryn and Claire Simonds of Jacksonville, and Jessica and Amber Bencher of Virginia; 5 step-grandchildren; one sister, Pat Riley of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Massa; and two brothers, Carl H. Johnson Jr. and Robert E. Johnson.
   Mrs. Riley graduated from Tri-City High School and later from Jacksonville School District #117 School of Practical Nursing. She was a nurse for Beardstown Hospital for many years until its closure. She then worked at the Walker Nursing Home in Virginia until her retirement. She was a member of the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church in rural Virginia. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she enjoyed spending time with family, shopping, flower gardening, and collecting Raggedy Anns and patriotic pins.

Paul M. Riley, 1923-2008, Virginia
   Paul M. Riley, 84, of Virginia, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008 at Walker Nursing Home in Virginia.
   He was born May 1, 1923 in Cass County, the son of Walter and Grace Irvin Riley. He married Betty Leona Johnson on Feb. 28, 1949 in Hensley, Ark., and she preceded in death May 22, 2003.
   He is survived by five sons, Walter and Donald (wife, Donna), both of Virginia, Alan (wife, Colleen) of Goffstown, N.H, Edward (wife, Deb) of Waukesha, Wis., and Carl (wife, Sharon) of Smithfield; three daughters, Susan (husband, Jim) Shelts and Karen (husband, Rodney) Simonds, both of Jacksonville and Beverly Bencher of Virginia; eight grandchildren, Kate and Kim Riley of Goffstown, N.H., Paul C. Riley of Virginia, David Riley of Glendale, Calif., Bryn and Claire Simonds of Jacksonville, and Jessica and Amber Bencher of Virginia; five step grandchildren; two sisters, Freida Dalton of San Diego and Marge (husband, George) Fanning of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold (surviving wife, Patricia of Virginia) Riley and William "Bill"; and one sister, Helen Kruse.
   Mr. Riley was a 1941 graduate of Virginia High School and served with the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946. Following military service, he farmed in Cass County for several years. He later worked as a mechanic for Reynolds Service Station and retired following several years as a truck driver for C & H Transportation. He was a life long member of Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church, west of Virginia, and an early member of the Cass County Cavaliers motorcycle club. A private pilot, he previously enjoyed flying his two airplanes. He enjoyed tinkering and welding in his shop, gardening in his yard, maintaining his extensive purple martin houses, and most of all, spending time with his family.
   Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Virginia, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia.The family will meet friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.    Alberta Marie Ring, 87, of Rushville, died Tuesday evening, March 6, 2007, at Culbertson Long Term Care Facility in Rushville.
   She was born Feb. 10, 1920, in Cass County, the daughter of Louis and Leta Korte Sweatman. She married William Arthur Ring on July 20, 1941, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs, and he survives.
   She is also survived by four sons, Charles (wife, Barbara) of Virginia and Merle, Dale (wife, Vickie) and Wayne (wife, Marilyn) all of Rushville; eight grandchildren, Kevin (wife, Mary), Collin (wife, Courtney) and Alexander Ring, Lisa (husband, Pete) Dupoy, Amy (husband, Jim) Becker, Anne Marie (husband, Rafe) Breedlove, Wendy (husband, Rob) Baker and Suzanne (husband, Rob) Smith; 11 great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and one brother, Leland (wife, Norma) Sweatman of Virginia. She was preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Jan Ring; and one sister.
   Mrs. Ring was a homemaker and a life long member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening and cooking. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery.    Bernice Stocker Ring, 84, of Beardstown, died Monday Oct. 16, 2006, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
   She was born Feb. 17, 1922, in Winchester, the daughter of Lee and Meada Tankersley McCarty. She married Ted Stocker on Feb. 17, 1944, and he preceded her in death April 6, 1973. She later married Gary Ring Sr.
   She is survived by one daughter, Beverly Welbourne of Beardstown; one son, Aaron (wife, Donna) Stocker of Beardstown; five grandchildren, Keith and Todd Huston and Josh, Heath and Megan Stocker; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter; one brother, Floyd McCarty; and three sisters, Pauline Beckman, Thelma Denney and Edna Fitzpatrick.
   Mrs. Ring was employed as a telephone operator many years ago. With her husband, she owned and operated Zepher Tavern in Beardstown for many years. She and her husband also raised horses for competition.

Elizabeth 'Jan' Ring, 1943-2006, Rushville
   Elizabeth "Jan" Ring, 63, of Rushville, died Wednesday morning, November 8, 2006, at her residence.
   She was born April 5, 1943, in Beardstown, the daughter of Ben and Margaret Bell Carnahan. She married Merle L. Ring on July 19, 1964, at the First United Methodist Church in Beardstown, and he survives.
   She is also survived by two daughters Lisa (husband, Pete) Dupoy of Rushville and Wendy (husband, Rob) Baker of Camden; three grandchildren, Justin and Tristan Dupoy of Rushville and Michala Swanger; and three brothers, Ben (wife, Carol) Carnahan of Oakwood, Bob Carnahan of Effingham and Tom (wife, Doris) Carnahan of Galesburg. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Margaret (surviving husband, Bob Rice of Beardstown).
   Mrs. Ring graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1961, from Lincoln Land Community College with an Associates Degree in Early Childhood, and then she attended Western Illinois University. In 1973, she opened, owned and operated Ring Daycare in Virginia. She later was employed as a "one-on-one" teacher's aide at Gard Elementary School in Beardstown, retiring after 12 years of service. She was doing substitute teaching. She enjoyed making crafts and gardening. Her family was her truest treasure in life and she especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
   Memorial graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet friends from noon until 1:45 p.m. Saturday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Memorials are suggested to Virginia Daycare or Gard School Elementary School Playground Fund.

   Katherine R. "Katie"Ring, 87, of rural Virginia, died Sunday evening, May 27, 2007, at Walker Nursing Home in Virginia.
   She was born April 20, 1920 in Cass County, the daughter of Earl and Ethel Geuder Ross. She married Melvin C. Ring on Nov. 14, 1942 in St. Charles, Mo., and he preceded in death on Feb. 15, 2003.
   She is survived by one sister, Helene Irlam of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Earl (surviving wife, Betty of Redford, Mo.) Ross, Roy Charles (surviving wife, Betty Lou of Springfield) Ross and Kenneth E. Ross in infancy; and two sisters, Margaret Ross in infancy and Thelma Ann Cronk.
   Mrs. Ring was a 1938 graduate of Chandlerville High School and was employed for many years as a teller and bookkeeper for Petefish, Skiles & Co. Bank in Virginia, retiring in 1969. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Virginia.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Virginia, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Melvin C. Ring - 1916-2003 - Virginia
   Melvin C. Ring, 86 years, of rural Virginia, IL died Saturday morning, Feb. 15, 2003, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville, IL.
   He was born April 26, 1916 in Cass County, the son of William F. and Elsie I. Meier Ring. He married Katherine R. Ross on Nov. 14, 1942, in St. Charles, Mo., and she survives.
   He is also survived by two sisters, Leta (husband, Jim) Webster of Virginia and Louise (husband, Jim) Wildt of Erie; three brothers, Arthur (wife, Alberta) of Rushville, Wilbur of Virginia, and Rev. George (wife, Doris) Ring of Des Moines, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Ring.
   Mr. Ring served with the U.S. Navy during WW II. He farmed in Cass County from 1954 until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Virginia, Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau, and the American Legion. He enjoyed sporting events and rooted for the St. Louis Cardinals and the University of Illinois Fighting Illini.

Myrtle A. Ring - 1902-2003 - Virginia
   Myrtle A. Ring, 100, of Virginia, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 12, 2003, at Walker Nursing Home in Virginia.
   She was born Nov. 15, 1902, north of Virginia in Cass County, the daughter of Hiram and Ida Ernst Noblitt. She married Chris H. Ring, June 25, 1924, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in rural Arenzville, and he preceded her in death April 4, 1991.
   She is survived by two daughters, Onita Parlier of Virginia and Ida Mai Tegeder of Jacksonville; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Vernon E. Noblitt; and two sisters, Viola J. Hughes and Della E. Carls.
   Mrs. Ring assisted her husband with their farming operation for many years and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Virginia. She maintained an outgoing, caring personality and a wonderful sense of humor.

Wilbur E. Ring 1933-2006 - Virginia
   Wilbur E. Ring, 72, of Virginia, died Monday morning, May 22, 2006 at the home of his sister in Virginia.
He was born July 24, 1933 in rural Virginia, the son of William F. and Elsie Meier Ring. He married Patsy L. Stidman on March 7, 1954, in Virginia, and she preceded in death on Dec. 19, 2000.
   He is survived by four sons, Steve (wife, Betty) of Springfield, Greg (wife, Susie) of Baylis, Gail (wife, Pat) of Bloomington, and Alan of Virginia; one daughter, Cyndee (husband, Bob) Blakeman of Petersburg; eight grandchildren; two step grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Arthur (wife, Alberta) of Rushville; two sisters, Louise (husband, Jim) Wildt of Erie and Leta (husband, Jim) Webster of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death one sister, Mary Ring; and two brothers, Melvin (surviving wife, Katie of Virginia) and George (surviving wife, Doris of Des Moines, Iowa).
   Mr. Ring was a 1951 graduate of Virginia High School and attended the University of Illinois in Champaign. He served with the US Navy Seabees in the Philippines during the Korean War. He was employed several years with Fiat-Allis and later with Bunn-O-Matic Corporation, both in Springfield, prior to his retirement. He enjoyed assisting his brother, Melvin, with his farming operation. He was a member of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jacksonville and an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

   Loraine S. Rink, 95, of Springfield, and formerly of Beardstown, died Sunday, January 27, 2008, at Bickford House in Springfield.
   She was born April 19, 1912 in Chesterland, Ohio, the daughter of Rev. Asa Baker and Flora Bell Strawther Stickley. She married Emil Arthur Rink on September 17, 1938 at National City Christian Church in Washington, D.C. He preceded her in death October 5, 1991.
   Surviving are her son, Emil Edward "Ed" (wife, Peggy) Rink of Beardstown; two grandchildren; Edward Anton "Ted" (special friend, Jessica Ireland) Rink, Chicago and Sara Marie Rink; Greensboro, North Carolina; her brother, Vernon Baker Stickley of Frederick, Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother V.V. Stickley, her sister, Phyllis Smith, her grandson, Anton in infancy, and a nephew, Dale Stickley.
   Mrs. Rink was formerly employed at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. and later, served as vice president of the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Beardstown. She was also a homemaker. She was currently a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Springfield. Prior to her move to Springfield, she had been an active member of First Evangelical Church in Beardstown.
   Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Thursday, January 31, 2008, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Springfield. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Friday, February 1, at First Evangelical Church in Beardstown, with burial in the Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to both funeral services at the churches.
   Memorials have been suggested to Christian Love In Action Building Fund in Beardstown, her churches, or donor's choice.

Stewart E. "Jay" Rives, Jr., 1971-2007, Chandlerville
   Stewart E. "Jay Rives, Jr., 35, of Chandlerville, died Sunday afternoon, July 1, 2007 in Jacksonville. He was born Nov. 1, 1971 in Carrollton, the son of Stewart E. Sr. and Virginia "Jenny" Griffith Rives. He married Melissa L. Rynders March 6, 1993 in Virginia, and she survives.
   He is also survived by his father of Morton; his mother, Jenny and step-father, Junior Wells of Virginia; three daughters, Jeni, Lakyn and Emilee all at home; one brother, Todd Forrester of Virginia; three sisters, Heather (husband, Chris) Dirks of Chandlerville, Amber Rives and Crystal Rives both of Florida, one step-sister, Mandy (husband, Matt) Kern of Auburn, and one step-brother, Lance Wells of Mint Hill, N.C.; and 15 nieces and nephews.
   Mr. Rives was a member of the New Beginnings Church in Ashland and the A-C Central School Board. He was a union steward at his work and avid golfer, hunter and fisherman when he had the time. He loved attending his daughters sports and school activities. He was very active in his community and had formerly coached several sports teams. He worked for the Nestle Company in Jacksonville. He was dedicated to his family, his church and served his Lord.
   Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Lintner-Hurley Funeral Home in Chandlerville, with burial at Chandlerville Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to an education fund for his daughters. Condolences may be left at www.hurleyfh.com.
Note: Mr. Rives was killed in an apparent electrocution accident during his work at Nestle Beverage Company.
