RYAN, Rev. Father Michael - Virginia Gazette, Virginia, Illinois, March 25, 1892 - Submitted by Kerry B. Springer
Rev. Father Michael Ryan, December 25, 1847 - March 19, 1892
Rev. M. Ryan, for many years the priest in charge of St. Luke’s Catholic Church in this city, died at his late home, Saturday. Services were held at the church in this city, Tuesday, which were attended by a large number of people from this and surrounding cities and by numerous priests and prominent church men.
His remains were kept at his home until Monday evening when they were conveyed to the church where they remained all night watched by a guard of honor composed of the young men of the parish. At 10 o’clock the solemn office of the dead was admirably rendered by the priests within the Sanctuary. After the office had been chanted, a solemn requiem high mass was sung by Very Rev. Father Mohr, of New Berlin, celebrant, with Rev. Father Weigand, of Beardstown, as deacon, Rev. J.J. Higgins, of Taylorville as subdeacon and Rev. P.J. McManus, of this city, as master of ceremonies.
The panegerie was preached by the Very Rev. Father Macken, of Decatur, a classmate and long life friend of the dead priest. He took for his text the words of the scripture: "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord." He is an orator of rare ability and drew a vivid picture of the union of the soul and God--the intention God had in the creation of man, how sin entered the world, and by sin death passed on to all mankind. Having forcibly and logically shown the bearing the text had on the life of Father Ryan, he launched into a description of the many sterling qualities of the deceased. Amongst the virtues noticeable in his character the preacher pointed to his humility, patience and that golden virtue of charity. He pointed with a holy pride to the fact that it could be said with truth of Father Ryan that no one ever heard him say one uncharitable word against his fellow man.
The remains were taken to Springfield Wednesday where the funeral services proper were held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in that city. The body was attended by a number from this city, and the church at Springfield was crowded. The Dean Father Mohr of New Berlin, officiated, and the services were conducted with all the ceremonies and solemnities of the Catholic Church. Father Mohr was assisted by Vicar General Hickey who said Mass. Father Weigands of Beardstown was Deacon and Father O’Brien of Roodhouse, subdeacon, and Father Ducey, the master of ceremonies. All the Catholic societies of Springfield were present in a body and the procession which was a large one, proceeded to the cemetery headed by the Fourth Regiment band. There were twenty-seven priests present during the services and at the grave. Thomas Meade and Thomas Walsh of this city, with prominent church men of Springfield acted as pallbearers.
Father Ryan was born of respectable parents of Ballykillaboy Parish of Kilmacow, County Kilkenny, Ireland, in the year 1847. He made his primary studies in that far famed institution of Mount Millary. After completing his preparatory course, he with his twin brother, Rev. Lawrence Ryan entered All Hallows College, Dublin, where he was ordained Priest in 1875. Soon after his ordination he came to this country and labored in the Diocese of Alton at the Cathedral. He was not long there until he gained the confidence of his Bishop, who gave him charge of this parish of Virginia where he labored for 16 years. He had the love and respect of his people and that of all citizens irrespective of creed or nationality. He leaves a brother, James Ryan, of Chicago, and sister, Catherine Ryan, of Virginia.
