Carroll V. Satrorius, 1918-2007, Ashland
   Carroll V. Satorius, 88, of rural Ashland, died Thursday, May 17, 2007 at his residence.
   He was born June 28, 1918 in Newmansville Township in Cass County, the son of William and Myrtle Stowell Satorius. He married Arlene Blakeman on June 5, 1948, in Petersburg, and she survives.
   He is also survived by one daughter, Barbara (husband, Michael) Baker of Elmhurst; two grandsons, David and Brian Baker, both of Elmhurst; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, William G. "Ted," Woodrow "Jack" and Howard; and two sisters, Hermina Murphy and Helen Ruppel.
   Mr. Satorius was a 1936 graduate of Tallula High School. A recipient of the Purple Heart, he served with the US Army’s 95th Infantry during WW II in the European Theater. He returned to Cass County where he has been a life long grain and livestock farmer. An avid reader, he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ashland, Jacksonville American Legion Post #279, Virginia Lodge #544 A F & A M, and the Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau.
   Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Ashland. Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Petersburg. where military rites will be conducted. Visitation will be held From 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Ashland. Memorial are suggested to Ashland First Baptist Church or C-A-V EMTs. Mary Catherine 'Kay' Scanlan, 1929-2006, Beardstown
   Mary Catherine "Kay" Howey Scanlan, 77, of Northbrook, and formerly of Beardstown, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at Denton Good Samaritan Village in Denton, Texas.
   She was born May 30, 1929, in Bunker Hill, Ind., the daughter of Carlyle Edward and Mary Josephine Smith Howey. She married Robert A. Houston in 1948 in Beardstown. She later married James Scanlan in 1968 in Deerfield.
   She is survived by one son Richard (wife, Susan) Houston of Aubrey, Texas; one daughter, Patricia Houston of Los Angeles; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl A. and Frank E. Howey.
   Mrs. Scanlan graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1947 and attended Western Illinois State Teacher's College for three years. She was an office supervisor for Underwrighters Laboratories in Northbrook for 22 years until her retirement in 1994. She formerly served as president of the Deerfield-Townley Women's Club. She was interested in theater and she enjoyed playing golf and tennis.
   Memorial graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Beardstown. Sager Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be sent to sagerfh@casscomm.com.

Carlyle 'Carl' Schaad, 1923-2006, Chandlerville
   Carlyle "Carl" Schaad, 83, of Sparks, Nev., and formerly of Chandlerville, died away Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2006 at the Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev.
   He was born Oct 10, 1923 in Iowa the son of Carl and Marguerite Schnell Schaad. He married Nora Webb in July of 1943, and she survives.
   He is also survived by one brother, Howard Andrew (wife, Rachel) of Orland Park; 16 nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.
   Mr. Schaad attended Monmouth College, the University of Nevada, Reno and the University of New Mexico School of Law. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941 and earned his wings in 1943. He was shipped to England and flew B-17's over the European Theater in World War II. He was shot down, taken prisoner by the Germans in February and released from prison camp by General Patton's tank corps in May 1945. He remained in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War, resigning his commission in 1958.
After World War II, he worked principally in the air and space industries as a contract negotiator with North American Aviation, Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Xerox Corporation subsidiary Electro Optical Systems. He also worked in contracts at UNR when he moved from Southern California to Reno in 1979. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force Association, the 95th Bomb Group (H) Association and the Reno's Old Men Eating Out Group.

Jack Schaddel Sr., 1922-2007, Ashland
   Jack Schaddel Sr., 84, of Ashland, died Friday morning, Jan. 19, 2007 at the Venice Regional Memorial Hospital in Venice, Fla.
   He was born Oct. 7, 1922 in Oakford, the son of Charles and Marie Vogt Schaddel. He married Ann Seaborn on April 28, 1951 at St. Augustine Rectory in Ashland, and she survives.
   He is also survived by one son, Jack Jr. (wife, Donna) of Pleasant Plains; three daughters, Nancy (husband, Albert) Eck of Springfield, Kathy (husband, Brian) Bomke and Tammy (husband, Rick) Stone, both of Pleasant Plains; 12 grandchildren.
   Albert Eck III (fiancé, Kim Herrick), Gretchen Eck and Matt Schaddel, all of Springfield, Emily (husband, George) Sergot of Des Plaines, Katie Schaddel (fiancé, Pal Patel) of Raleigh, N.C., and Jessica, Justin, Jordan Ann and Janeese Bomke and Morgan Ann, Cody Lea and Trevor Stone, all of Pleasant Plains; six step grandchildren, Anne (husband, Bill) Schuh of Delavan, Wis., Fred (wife, Kay) Eck of Wheaton, Mike (wife, Jeni) Eck of Cobden, Phil (wife, Shirley) Eck and Mary Kate (husband, Ken) Ressel, both of Springfield, and Robin (husband, Brian) Kerner of St. Charles; 20 step greatgrandchildren; three sisters, Eileen Jones of Petersburg, Nora Viands (husband, Robert) of Rockford, and Mary Ann Cosner of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles (surviving wife, Dolores of Jacksonville) and Richard (surviving wife, Doris of Springfield).
   Mr. Schaddel was a graduate of Ashland High School and was a lifelong farmer. He was a past president and former board member of Ashland Farmers Elevator and a former member of Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau. He was a member of St. Augustine Parish in Ashland and the Knights of Columbus in New Berlin.
   A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Ashland, with burial at St. Augustine Cemetery, west of Ashland. The family will meet friends from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the St. Augustine Alter Society for the card table fund and the statue fund.    Mrs. Cyrus Schaffer of Monroe Precinct was seriously burned Mon. and died on Tues. Her husband had been burning brush nearby, she and the children went to where he was. She stepped over a burned place in the ground and her clothing caught fire. Rev. conducted services and burial was in Monroe Cemetery. She was 32 and born in Mancheser, England. She leaves her husband and two children, a sister, Mrs. C.E. Burns of Beardstown and her father, Samuel Brown of Bluff Springs.

   CANTON, Albert H. Schall, 79, of Canton, formerly of Beardstown, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at Graham Hospital, Canton. He was born Aug. 16, 1919, in Beardstown, the son of Harry and Stella Davis Schall. He married Katherine Humphreys in 1943 in Oakland, Calif. Mr. Schall was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving for 20 years and retiring as a chief petty officer in 1960. He later taught drafting and driver's education at Canton Senior High School, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Elks Lodge 626, American Legion Post 16, VFW Post 1984, past member of the Masonic lodge in Tennessee and a former member of the Canton Country Club. Survivors: wife, Katherine; a son, Richard Schall of Norris; two daughters, Marilyn Alton of Springfield and Beverly Webster of Macomb; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Kline of Macomb and Marie Guy. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oaks-Hines Funeral Home, Canton, the Rev. Paul Walles officiating. Burial: White Chapel Memory Gardens, Canton.

   Betty Lee McAfee Schall 58, of Dawson died at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Hospital North.
   She was born in Chapin on Aug. 8, 1930, the daughter of Henry J. and Georgia M. Rigor Schall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel L. McAfee, in 1976. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth G. Wise of Springfield and Jerry D. Wise of Springfield, Mass.; one daughter, Jeanne M. Walters of Rushville; five grandchildren; two sisters, Velma Miller of Beardstown and Marion Davison of Springfield; and one brother, Hank Schall of St. Petersburg, Fla.
   Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Mott and Henning Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Herbert Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Hall Cemetery in Athens.

Clifford Schall of Roodhouse dies; rites set Tuesday
   Roodhouse- Clifford M. Schall, 76, of Roodhouse died 7 p.m. Sunday at White Hall Hospital. He was born June 14, 1905 in Cass County, a son of Edward and Anna Kruse Schall. He married Rena Jacobs Nov. 27, 1930, and she survives.
   Also surviving are three sisters: Mrs. Donald (Anita) Bierhaus, Lee Edda Schall and Nadine Schall, all of Virginia. He was preceded in death by a brother.
   A retired farmer of the Manchester area, he was a member of   the Sangamon Valley Presbyterian Church.
   Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fernwood Cemetery in Roodhouse. Mackey-Daws Funeral Home in Roodhouse is in charge of arrangements.

   Effie Blum, 102, Beardstown, died at 1:55 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, 1989 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. She was born near Bluff Springs July 1, 1887, the daughter of George and Sophia Davis Blum. She married Alex Lee Schall April 22, 1913. Mrs. Schall, along with her husband, raised two brothers, W. Otis Elkins and Aubrey F. Elkins, who were later adopted. Mr. Schall died Jan. 23, 1963 and Otis Elkins died May 3, 1981. She was also preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Loren, Lloyd, Harry and Elmer Blum. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Bluff Springs, a member of Women's Organization of the church, a charter member of Shiloh Unit of Homemakers Extension, a member of senior Citizens club of Beardstown and a past member of the Beardstown Hospital Auxiliary. She is survived by one son, Aubrey Elkins of Bellingham, Washington; three granddaughters, Patricia Elkins Guerrero of Long Beach, Calif., Esther May Elkins Harmon of Anderson, West Virginia and Beverly Ann Elkins Harmon of Wichita, Kansas; one grandson, Howard W. Elkins of Stockton, Calif.; nine great grandchildren; seven great, great grandchildren; one brother, Clarence Blum of Virginia ,Il., one nephew, Orville Blum of Arenzville, two nieces, Freida Blum Carls of Washington, Il., and Berdine Blum McDermott of Deerfield, Il.; also one sister-in-law, Margaret Taylor of East Peoria. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs, Pastor James H. Beaty, interim minister will officiate. Mrs. Schall will be taken to the church at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to lie in state until time of services. Interment will be in the Beardstown City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at Cline Funeral Home here. Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church of Bluff Springs.

Helen Jane Meyer Schall, 99, of Concord, died Saturday, October 6, 2007, at her residence.
   She was born June 9, 1908, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Louis Carl and Allie Belle Young Meyer. She married C. [Carl] Robert Schall on June 9, 1929, in Jacksonville, and he preceded her in death March 17, 1981.
   She is survived by two daughters, Patricia (husband, Rex) Thompson of Kansas City, Mo., and Lorraine Ann Hess of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, Donald Rex (wife, Nancy) Thompson of Shawnee Mission, Kan., Richard Alan Thompson of Grandview, Mo., and Beth Ellen (husband, Mike) Ladd of Seymour; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Delores Meyer Wilson of Murrayville; one brother, Charles Meyer of Canton, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son in infancy.
   Mrs. Schall was a 1927 graduate of Jacksonville High School and a 1929 graduate of Brown's Business College. She was an active member of Concord United Methodist Church in Concord, United Methodist Women, United Methodist Church Bible Study Group, World Gospel Mission Prayer Band, Explorer's Bible Study Group, Jolly Y's Senior Citizens pinochle group and the Ebenezer Home Extension Unit. She was a faithful financial supporter of the Concord Methodist Church, WRJR Channel 16 Christian television in Quincy and their children's home in India, World Gospel Missions and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. She was a life-time member of Weight Watchers and an avid solver of the daily crossword puzzle and "celebrity cipher" in the Jacksonville Journal-Courier. She kept current on all local, political, and world news via radio, television and newspaper and could carry on a conversation on most any subject derived from those sources. She had a "green thumb" and grew many different varieties of African violets and other plants in her home. She maintained various records of both the Schall and Meyer families, including genealogy and many old family photos which were all properly named and dated for the benefit of future generations. Both 90th and 95th birthday celebrations were hosted for her by her daughters with members of the family traveling to the celebrations from states as far away as California and Virginia.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Concord United Methodist Church, with burial at Concord Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to services Thursday at the church. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at Williamson Funeral Home, where the family will meet friends from 5-7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Concord United Methodist Church.    Hilda R. Schall, 86, of Virginia died at 8:17 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke's Health Care Center in Beardstown. Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia, with burial in Walnut Ridge Cemetery, Virginia.
Surviving are a niece, Hilda Clement of Virginia; two great-nephews; and a great-niece.

John Schall, Beardstown Man, Passes
   John Schall, long time resident of Cass county died at his home in Beardstown Friday night after an illness of four weeks. Mr. Schall had been in poor health for some time.
   Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, in charge of Rev. A.E. Ashton of the Bluff Springs M.E. church, in which the decedent held his first fellowship.
   Mr. Schall was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schall, and was born near Bluff Springs. He was married to Elsie Braun of St. Louis, Dec. 25, 1907. He is survived by his widow and one son, and one sister, Mrs. T. G. Mutch of Palmyra. He also leaves three brothers, Otto and Harry of near Beardstown and Henry of Frederick.

Brother of Local Residents Dies
   Julius W. Schall, farmer living near Sinclair, died at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Passavant Memorial hospital, Jacksonville, where he had been a patient. The remains were taken to the Gillham funeral home where funeral services were held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in charge of Rev. Koppelmann. Interment was made in the Beardstown cemetery. Mr. Schall was the son of Charles and Amelia Deckart Schall, and was born October 24, 1879. He was married to Lena Wessel, and she preceded him in death in July, 1919. Mr. Schall is survived by one son, Orville, of near Sinclair,and the following brothers and sisters: Harry Schall of Virginia, Mrs. Edith Newswanger of Beardstown, Albert and Alex Schall and Mrs. Irene Clayton of Virginia. He was a member of the Beardstown Lutheran Church.

   Roodhouse-Rena N. Schall, 92, of White Hall and formerly of Roodhouse died Sunday evening, March 10, 1996, at the North American Health Care Center in White Hall.
   She was born December 25, 1903, in Virginia, daughter of Joseph and Julia McCarthy Jacobs.
   She married Clifford M. Schall on November 27, 1930, in Virginia, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 20, 1981.  She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
She and her husband farmed east of Manchester for many years before retirement.  Mrs. Schall worked as a clerk at various stores in the area.
   Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Fernwood Cemetery.

   Ronald Schall, a truck driver, was killed instantly in an accident July 7, on Route 40 near Elk Springs, Colo.
   He was the son of Orville and Marie Rhoads Schall, Jacksonville. He was born in Jacksonville Novmeber 29, 1938.
   Graveside services were at 10:30 a.m. July 11 at Beardstown City Cemetery. Rev. Harold Woodworth of Our Redeamer Church officiated.

   Beardstown -- Wylma Schall, 76, of Beardstown, died at 7:20 a.m. Saturday at Myer Nursing Home in Beardstown. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia. Interment will be in Beardstown City Cemetery in Beardstown. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Neva Cox and Mrs. Erma Williams of Beardstown and Mrs. Della Marie Cox of Virginia.

Wilma L. Schalter, August 28, 1923-October 7, 2007
   Wilma L. Schalter, 84, of Beardstown, died October 7, 2007, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
   She was born August 28, 1923 in Maryville, the daughter of Benjamin and Edna Rembka Kettle. She married Edgar J. Schalter and he preceded her in death on September 27, 1998.
   Surviving are four nephews, Jerry Lee Grubb, Springfield, MO, and Benny, Kenny, and Lenny Lutz all of California; three nieces, Bonnie Jean Zink, Santa Claus, Indiana, Spring Wild, Walker, Louisiana and Carolyn McDonald, Caseyville; her great-niece, Venecia Leigh Sharp, Republic, Missouri; her great-great-nephew, Lathan Glaser, Republic, Missouri; one cousin, Allene Spernol, Glen Carbon; and her friend and caregiver Betty Rice of Beardstown.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Dorothy Grubb and Dolores Lutz, and her brother, Jack Kettle.
   Mrs. Schalter was a member of Collinsville Lutheran Church where she was baptized. Her life was dedicated to serving and taking care of others.
   Graveside services for Wilma Schalter were held 9 a.m. Thursday, October 11 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Beardstown with Wyatt Sager officiating.
   Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown was in charge of arrangements.
