Kaye Newingham Smedley, 1938-2008, Beardstown
Kaye Newingham Smedley, 69, of Beardstown, died Sunday morning, March 23, 2008, at her residence.
She was born Aug. 29, 1938, in Beardstown, the daughter of W.L. and Margaret Foster Newingham. She married Larry Smedley on Oct. 29, 1959, and he preceded her in death.
She is survived by one son, Jeff (wife, Stephanie) of Frederick; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Barbara Newingham of Beardstown and Kathy (husband, Richard) Crum of Rushville. She was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Newingham.
Mrs. Smedley was a 1957 graduate of Beardstown High School. She worked for the State of Illinois as a clerk and also as a tour guide for many years. She had also worked for a time as an agent with Frontier Airlines in Denver. After her retirement she worked for the Beardstown Public Library and the Beardstown Museum. She was a member of St. Alexius Catholic Church in Beardstown and Red Hat Ladies.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Alexius Catholic Church in Beardstown, with burial at St. Alexius Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown with a Rosary service at 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Cass-Schuyler Hospice or to an Educational Fund for her grandchildren.

Winifred J. "Winnie Jo" Smedley, 90, of Ashland, died Thursday, December 21, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
She was born June 13, 1926 in Virginia; the daughter of Harold and Leota Acres Wankel. She married Gordon L. Smedley on April 19, 1947 in Philadelphia and he survives.
She is also survived by two daughters, Lyn Dietz (husband, Roger), Jacksonville and Sandra Davis (husband, Greg), Springfield; four grandchildren, Beth Hopkins (husband, Jeff), Jacksonville, Becky Mahoney (husband, Michael), rural Alexander, Brett Leach, Alexander, and Andy Davis, Springfield; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack Wankel (wife, Helen), Literberry; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Harold "Sonny" Wankel and three nephews.
Mrs. Snedley was a 1944 graduate of Virginia High School. She was employed several years by the State of Illinois and was a long time homemaker. She was a member of the Ashland Church of Christ and was active in the Ashland Women's Club.
Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Ashland with burial in Ashland Cemetery. The family met with friends Tuesday at the funeral home. Bessie Lou Smith - 1924-2003 - Virginia
Bessie Lou Smith, 79, of Jacksonville, and formerly of Virginia, died Saturday afternoon, June 21, 2003 at the Golden Moments Senior Care Center in Jacksonville.
She was born Jan. 17, 1924, in Virginia, the daughter of Lee and Bessie Revis Sherrill. She married Allen E. Smith Aug. 12, 1941, in Bowling Green, Mo., and he preceded in death Oct. 1, 2002.
She is survived by one son, Rick E. Smith (wife, Sara) of Incline Village, Nev.; two grandchildren; one sister, Bettie Lee Settles of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Ruby Harris, Lee Edda Hartman, June White, Alberta Zillion, and Mary Ellen Briggs.
Mrs. Smith was employed for 30 years at Fiat-Allis in Springfield prior to her retirement. She was a member of the Virginia United Methodist Church.
Private family funeral services will be held later with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. There will be no visitation. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Virginia United Methodist Church. Duane Smith - 1921-2003 - Virginia
Duane Smith, 81, of Virginia, died Monday evening, May 5, 2003 at the Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born Dec. 14, 1921 in Ashland, the son of George Granville and Thelma Clemons Smith. He married Alberta L. Krieg June 2, 1946, at the Ashland United Methodist Church in Ashland, and she preceded in death on Aug. 25, 1995.
He is survived by two sons, the Rev. Russell (wife, Karen) of Danville and Randy (wife, Arlene) of Virginia; one daughter, Nancy (husband, Ron) Knous of Petersburg; six grandchildren, Alisa Smith-Reetz of East Peoria, Robert Smith of Danville, Casey Smith and Bonnie Jean Smith of Virginia, Ericka Knous and Zachary Knous of Petersburg; two brothers, Donald (wife, Jean) of Virginia and Darrell (wife, Lavelda) of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Smith was retired from farming in 1984. Recently, he worked for the Philadelphia Township Road District and assisted his neighbors with mowing and farm maintenance. He was a member of the Virginia United Methodist Church and the Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau. He served with the 521st Signal Corps of the 12th US Army Air Force during WW II based in North Africa, Italy, and the Mediterranean Theater for which he was awarded four Battle Stars. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, rock collecting and reading everything related to aviation. He was a student of native American life and maintained a collection of Indian artifacts.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Virginia United Methodist Church in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. The family will meet friends at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the church. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Virginia United Methodist Church. Virgil Fred Smith, 1915-2008, Beardstown
Virgil Fred Smith, 93, of Beardstown, passed away Friday afternoon, May 23, 2008, at Heritage Manor East in Beardstown.
He was bon on May 15, 1915, in Cooperstown. He was the son of Harrison David and Grace Bunfill Smith. He married Emma Gene Quinn on May 17, 1936, in Cass County. She preceded him in death in 1980.
He is survived by Doris Tritsch of Beardstown, his companion of 28 years; one son, David (wife, Ellen) Smith of Beardstown; one daughter, Ruth Ann (husband, Eddie) Martin of Chandlerville; two sisters, Norma Spencer of Beardstown and Nelda Smith of Panama City, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Virgil (wife, Carolyn) Smith of Jacksonville, Dr. Douglas (wife, Lori) Smith of Columbia, Mo., Marcia (husband, Charles) Rayot of Chatham, Dawn (husband, Bert) Rawlings of Tolono, Lisa Lee of Houston and Bridget Wilcox and Andy Wilcox of North Zulch, Texas; 12 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren as well as Doris' daughter, Lyn (husband, George) Belville, and son Butch (wife, Sandy) Tritsch, both of Beardstown. He was preceded in death by one son, Virgil F. Smith; one brother, Emil Smith; one sister, Elsie Crews; and one grandson, David Smith.
Mr. Smith's career extended from working on the river at the age of 14, to carpenter, to becoming a wrecker operator for Burlington Northern Railroad. He retired in 1979 after working 13 years as a road construction superintendent for Atwater Construction Co. in Springfield.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. with services scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Burial will be at Beardstown City Cemetery. Memorials have been suggested to the Beardstown First Southern Baptist Church Memorial Fund or Cass-Schuyler Hospice. Wayne E. Smith Sr., 1928-2007, Beardstown
Wayne E. Smith Sr., 79, of Golden, and formerly of Beardstown, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 7, 2007, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
He was born Aug. 3, 1928, in Bluffs, the son of James and Emma Beahr Smith. He married Betty McGill on July 6, 1948, in Virginia, and she survives.
He is also survived by three sons, Thomas, (wife, Marsha) of Round Lake Beach, Donald (wife, Betty) of Golden and Wayne "Eddie" Jr. (wife, Margaret) of Terrill, Texas; two daughters, Linda Jones of Dallas and Peggy (husband, Michael) Kile of Caddo Mills, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Beulah Warden of Beardstown; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald; four brothers, Edward "Buck," Dempsey, Galen and Junior; and two sisters, Geneva Reichert and Lily Rose Summey.
Mr. Smith farmed for Dana Lewis in Hersman for 15 years before moving to Dallas. There he was a printer for Vince Hagan for 15 years retiring in 1989. In 1995, he and his wife moved to Golden where he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, yard work and fishing. He was a good hard-working man and loving dad.
Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hersman Cemetery in Hersman. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Hunter Funeral Home in Golden. Shirley A. Smock, 68, of Ashland, died Tuesday afternoon, May 22, 2007, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
She was born Jan. 21, 1939, in Greene County, the daughter of Eugene and Dee Dee Hazelwood Newingham. She married Richard A. Smock Sr. on Sept. 21, 1957, in Jacksonville, and he preceded her in death March 5, 2000.
She is survived by three sons, David (wife, Dottie) and Richie Jr. (wife, Janet), both of Ashland, and Dennis (wife, Kathy) of Pleasant Plains; two daughters, Brenda (husband, Charley) Kennedy and Louann Judd, both of Ashland; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Larry, Bobbie, Weston and James Newingham; three sisters, Margie Cook, Patsy Osborne and Mary Dewitt; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Dana Hobbs; five grandchildren; and one sister.
Mrs. Smock was employed by the Secretary of State in Springfield.

Mollie Summers, 96, of Ashland, died Saturday, May 19, 2007 at the Walker Nursing Home in Virginia.
She was born April 8, 1911 in Menard County, near Tallula, the daughter of William Louis and Isabelle Belton Chaffin. She married Arza V. Summers on Feb. 19, 1944, in Petersburg, and he preceded in death on Jan. 1, 1981.
She is survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Ella Chaffin in infancy, her twin Ollie Chaffin, Loudella Brown and Stella McDaniel.
Mrs. Summers was a homemaker and a member of the Ashland Church of Christ.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ashland Church of Christ, with burial at Ashland Cemetery. A visitation will be from noon Wednesday until the time of services at the church. Daniel Spears, 1908-2006, Beardstown
Daniel P. Spears, 98, of Beardstown, died Thursday morning, Nov. 2, 2006, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
He was born Aug. 25, 1908, in Morgan County, the son of William Obed and Josephine Vasconcellos Spears. He married Zelma L. Mason on March 15, 1936, in Bluff Springs, and she preceded him in death Jan. 18, 2003.
He is survived by two sons, Charles (wife, Jaye) of Jacksonville and Robert of Beardstown; one daughter, Phyllis Spears Hill of Dawson; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill, Floyd and one in infancy; and three sisters, Marguerite Place, Nellie Perry and one in infancy.
Mr. Spears was a member of Bluff Springs United Methodist Church. He retired from the CB&Q Railroad in 1965, was employed in maintenance at Beardstown High School for 10 years, worked at Bluff Springs Elevator and also worked at Harris Market in Beardstown for several seasons. He was a farmer, enjoyed making wine and always looked forward to spring to plant a huge vegetable garden.

Zelma L. Spears - 1915-2003 - Beardstown
Zelma L. Spears, 87, of rural Beardstown, died Saturday afternoon, Jan. 18, 2003, at Heritage Manor East Nursing Home in Beardstown.
She was born April 5, 1915, in Parnell, Ky., the daughter of Robert Mason and Minnie Cole Mason. She was married [to] Daniel P. Spears March 15, 1936, at the home of Oswald Jokisch in Bluff Springs, and he survives.
She is also survived by two sons, Robert (wife, Bobbye) of Beardstown, and Charles (wife, Jaye) of Jacksonville; one daughter, Phyllis Hll of Dawson; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Orville Hamm of Colorado; and two sisters; Zora Lomelino of White Hall and Veda Delay of Pekin.
She was preceded in death by one son-in-law; three brothers, Alvin Hamm, Albert Hamm and Bill Mason; and three sisters, Phyllis Turner, Remia Larson, and an infant sister.
Mrs. Spears attended the Bluff Springs United Methodist Church. She had spent her entire married life in the Beardstown area raising her family and working at the Arrow Restaurant and Yates Restaurant. Zelma was also a licensed CNA for the Schmidt Memorial Hospital and Meyers Nursing Homes. She and her husband were honored with an open house by their children for their 65th wedding anniversary March 18, 2001.

Richard M. 'Dick' Spencer, 1945-2003
Richard M. "Dick" Spencer, 58, of Beardstown, died Monday afternoon, Oct. 20, 2003, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
He was born Jan. 17, 1945, in Jacksonville, the son of Ronald and Norma Smith Spencer. He married Donna Jean Muirheid on March 28, 1965, in Pleasant Hill, and she preceded him in death in 1979. He married Karen Tweddell on May 25, 1984, in Beardstown, and she survives in Beardstown.
He is also survived by his parents of Beardstown; one daughter, Lynette (husband, Ken) Goldsmith of Beardstown; two sons, James (wife, Sharmen) of Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily, and Curtis Spencer of Macomb; two step-daughters, Terri (husband, Mitch) Lillie of Bluff Springs and Tiffany Logsdon (companion, Carrie Fisher) of Radford, Va.; one stepson, Thad (wife, Lisa) Logsdon of Sesser; eight grandchildren, Michael Edwards, Vern Goldsmith, Shane Swan, Shania Bacon, Dylan Logsdon, Dalton Logsdon, Brian Krominga and Chelsea Krominga; and one great-granddaughter.
Mr. Spencer graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1963. He was employed with Central Illinois Public Service/Ameren in Beardstown since March of 1980. As a "history buff," he enjoyed watching the History Channel and traveling to historic places. He was also a NASCAR and hunting enthusiast. His great joy in life came from time spent with his family.

Marjorie Spicer, 77, Ashland, died Jan. 23, at Hillsboro.
Mrs. Spicer was born in Buckhorn Township, Brown County, Sept. 19, 1902, daughter of Plesant and Margaret McDannald Butler. She married Charles Albert Spicer Dec. 13, 1919, and he died Feb. 23, 1972.
Survivors include three sons, Charles Lloyd, Jacksonville, and Rev. W. Wayne and Leo L., both of Ashland; a daughter, Violet Smallwood, Witt; a brother, Charles Butler, Lincoln; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son.
Mrs. Spicer was a member of the First Church of God in Ashland where services were held at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 26 with Rev. Jimmie Cooper officiating. Burial was in Versailles Cemetery.

Mary L. Spicer, 84, of Ashland, IL died Thursday, December 18, 2008 at the Jacksonville Convalescent Center in Jacksonville, IL.
She was born August 17, 1924 in Prentice, IL; the daughter of Lloyd and Ethel Rome Summers. She married Leo L. Spicer Sr. on September 26, 1958 in Virginia, IL and he survives.
She is also survived by a son, Leo Spicer Jr. of Pleasant Plains and two sisters Betty Noel and Patsy Hand (husband, Lee) all of Ashland. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Jane Summers, Elma Summers, and Eva Thomas.
Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at Pleasant Plains Cemetery in Pleasant Plains. There will be no visitation. W. Wayne Spicer, 1937-2006
W. Wayne Spicer, 69, of Ashland, died Saturday afternoon, Oct. 21, 2006, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born April 24, 1937, in Versailles, the son of Charles and Ellen Butler Spicer. He married Beverly Orris on Feb. 27, 1958, in Murrayville, and she survives.
He is also survived by two daughters, Laura McCombs of Springfield and Teresa J. (husband, Andy) Thompson of rural Philadelphia; three grandchildren, Stephanie McCombs of Springfield and Kaitlin Grace and Samantha Rae Thompson, both of rural Philadelphia; one brother, Leo LaRue Spicer Sr. (wife, Mary) of Ashland; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Herschel and Lloyd; and one sister, Violet Smallwood.
Mr. Spicer worked for PPG Industries and owned and operated Spicer Paint Supply Inc. in Springfield for over 40 years prior to his retirement. An ordained Church of God minister, he served the First Church of God in Jacksonville and the First Church of God in Ashland for several years in addition to preaching in several area churches. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, collecting train memorabilia, and spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends.

Opal V. Spoon, 85, of Beardstown, died Sunday morning, March 2, 2003, at Heritage South in Beardstown.
She was born May 5, 1917, in Beardstown, the daughter of Herbert Nathan and Zelma Ann Skiles Wells. She married Herman W. Spoon Dec. 1, 1934, in Virginia, and he preceded her in death April 27, 1991.
She is survived by two sons, Raymond (wife, Sue) of Beardstown and Dean (wife, Mary) of El Dorado, Kan.; six daughters, Lee (husband, Al) Bietsch, Sharon (husband, Fred) Spillers and Janet (husband, Bill) Petersen, all of Beardstown, Shelba Dyer of Arenzville, Bonnie (husband, Mike) O'Hara of Tifton, Ga., and Marilyn (husband, Dave) McNeil of Houston; 26 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Wanda (husband, Bill) McGovern and Vivian Wilhite, both of Beardstown. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Vern "Shine" (surviving wife, Ella "Sis" Wells of Beardstown); three sisters, Dorothy, Leile, and Betty; one son, Herman "Woody" (surviving wife, Teri of Albany, Ga.), one son-in-law, Will Brooks; and one granddaughter.
Mrs. Spoon attended Beardstown High School and she was a charter member of First Christian Church in Beardstown. She was formerly employed in the deli-bakery of Walker's IGA in Beardstown for 17 years.

June Veronica (Devine) Springer, 43, passed away at 6:40 a.m., Saturday, December 9, 1978, at her home in Orange Park, Florida, after a courageous three year battle with breast cancer surrounded by her brothers and sisters. She was born June 3, 1935 in Ashland, Illinois, the daughter of William Harry and Mary Isabelle (Kinney) Devine. She married Navy Ltjg. Donald F. Springer on January 18, 1958 in the Catholic Chapel, U.S. Naval Air Station, St. Louis, MO and they later divorced in February 1974.
June lived in St. John's Hospital in Springfield from the age of two weeks until two years old and then in the Catholic Children's Home in Alton with her brothers and sisters after their mother's death in June 1935. She attended school in Alton until 1944 when the family moved to Virginia, IL. She attended school there until 1950, completing 9th grade at Virginia High School. June also attended Peoria Central High School and graduated from Caruthersville (Missouri) High School in 1953 and lettered in softball and basketball.
She lived in Missouri, Kansas, Alaska, California, Pennsylvania, Taiwan, and Florida due to her husband's Navy career. She played softball, golf and bowled on women's leagues. June loved gardening, traveling, playing sports, dancing, volunteer work and most of all, spending time with her family and friends.
Her survivors include her sons David and Sean, daughters Michele, Kerry, and Kellie, at home in Orange Park, Florida; sisters Mary (Kay) Devine Pack (husband, Billy), Caruthersville, Missouri, and Rose Devine Davis (husband, Conrad), Peoria, Illinois, brothers Benjamin Devine (wife, Viola), Deming, New Mexico, Frank Devine (wife, Frances), Coldspring, Texas, James Devine, Foley, Alabama, and William Devine (wife, Dorothy), Tucson, Arizona, 18 nieces and 7 nephews, cousins Eugene Devine, Iowa, Catherine and Bernadine Collins, Virginia, IL, Marguerite (Kinney) Schneider, Lawrence Kinney, John, Gerald, and James Schneider, South Dakota, Joan Lerch and Rita (Lerch) Lyons, Rock Island, IL, George Greuel, Rushville, IL, Helen (Daly) Lunden, Patrick, and John Daly, Chicago.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Johnny Devine, grandparents Thomas and Mary (Ryan) Kinney and Patrick and Bridget (Daly) Devine, aunts Ellen (Devine) Kinney, Rose Anna Devine, Sarah (Ryan) Daly, uncles Frank Devine, Henry Devine, and Joseph Ryan, and cousins James Frank Collins, Jr., Rose (Kinney) Lerch, Harry Devine, Mildred (Devine) Stogsdill, and Raymond Greuel.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 11, 1978, 10 a.m. at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Orange Park, Florida with Father Joseph James officiating. Interment at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia, Illinois.
