She was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Bluffs, the daughter of Iver Dietrick and Julia Katherine Hankins Mueller. She married Raymond Thomas "Muley" Loyd Jr. of Pittsfield, on Oct. 7, 1942, and he died in combat in 1945 during World War II. She married Loyd Martin Thomas on Aug. 6, 1950, in Beardstown, and he preceded her in death in April 2005.
She is survived by three sons, Dr. R. Thomas Loyd III (wife, Lindsey) of Arlington, Va., Marty (wife, Teresa) Thomas of Benton, Ark.; and LTC Brett (wife, Lindsay) of Arlington, Va. (presently serving in Afghanistan); three daughters, Sandi Spurbeck of Edwardsville, Jennie (husband, Allan) Prather of Dalhart, Texas, and Barb (husband, Gary) Merriman of Beardstown; eight grandchildren, SFC Rick (wife, Jenny) Spurbeck of Winchester (presently serving in Iraq), Jessica (husband, Brad) Parlier of Virginia, J.T. Fiene of Tucson, Ariz., Becky Thomas of Temple, Texas, Justin Workman of Macomb, Blair (husband, Sam) Fitzpatrick of Arlington, Va., and Tom and Clint Merriman, both of Beardstown; four great-grandsons; one sister, Irma Dean (husband, Mick) Berry of Bluffs; one brother, Bill Mueller of Sun City West, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Beardstown.
A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Mrs. Thomas was a tremendous cook, enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe, and loved ballroom dancing with her husband. From her early years in Bluffs, she exhibited a lively curiosity about world events and especially World War II that led her to become widely read, open-minded, and sympathetic to those less fortunate than she. She instilled the love of reading and learning in her children, and she encouraged them to be diligent, to venture, and to become successful in life. She lived modestly and donated anonymously. She volunteered. She wa good-hearted; she laughed easily. A vivacious extrovert, she liked working in the Beardstown community because every day she met friends and neighbors. When she could no longer travel because of her husband’s illness, she began to write, and she kept a daily, handwritten journal of her thoughts and observations for her last 14 years. Her writings reveal her to be a kind and sober realist whose thoughts and prayers were centered on her husband, her children, and her grandchildren, and the many good people in her community.
