The 2002 Catlin Historical Society Ham and Bean Dinner was held October 13 on the grounds of the Catlin Heritage Museum. The menu included bottomless bowls of ham and beans and chili plus hot dogs, barbecue, chili dogs, applesauce, cornbread and tasty squares of homemade cake.
Servers were Jeff and Rita Monyok, Neal and Cathy Brogan, John and Sara Cast, Steve and Linda Berry, Judy Walker, Kristi McGee, Ron and Sue Colwell, Curt and Barb Huffman, and Bruce and Patty Boyd. "A special thanks goes to Buzz Ritchie for the great over-the-fire cooking," said society president Sara Cast. Buzz was assisted by his son Scott in cooking the ham and beans and chilli, an all-night process.
Cast also said she wanted to thank Boy Scouts Josh Swallow and George Monyok for helping to keep tables clean throughout the day. A special display of farm tools was created in the museum's front yard by museum volunteer Evelyn Darr. Gardens around the museum were alive with fall colors, the work of Gene and Iris Martin.
A highlight of the event was the drawing for a hot-air balloon ride donated to the society by Larry and Sheila Owen of Danville. The lucky winner was Don Smoot Sr. The Owens provided balloon rides as a fund raiser for the society during the 2001 Ice Cream Social. The museum was open for tours during the social. Guides were Esther Elmore, Jim and Dorothy Jones, Don and JoAnn Fleming, Evelyn Darr, Virginia Wallen and Nellie Mae Davison.
