Ham and Bean Dinner

October 7, 2012

With lots of rain on Friday and strong winds on Saturday we were worries bout our weather for Sunday, it turned out to be a wonderful cool, crisp fall day.  Our crowd was good and generous with their donations so we consider it another successful year.  Chef Buzz Ritchie worked his magic again this providing us with a full kettle of delicious beans and a kettle of chili.  John Crawford, visiting from Texas and Buzz’s grandson Andrew Ritchie were great help for the day.  It’s difficult to tell with our pictures but they start cooking at 5am and it’s very dark and very cool!  Saturday was a prep day and Alma Moody helped cut up vegetables and meat needed for the soups.
Once again a big thanks out goes to the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of Catlin.  The Boy Scouts helped on Saturday with setting up tables and chairs then returning again on Sunday afternoon to help put everything away—they save us so much time and energy!  The younger Cub Scouts assist during the actual dinner, carrying trays, clearing tables, refilling drinks and garbage detail.  Both groups of Scouts have wonderful leadership and it’s nice to know our future leaders are doing so well!
The Museum house and Log Cabin building were open for visitors.  We were happy to have many people taking the time to tour thru and learn what we are really all about.  The front parlor had our display of china painting from Elinor Puzey Crawford, longtime Museum member and past board president.  The school Wolverine and Salt Fork Storm items are always a favorite display.  Our guides for the day were:  Freda Weaver, Lela Mae DeNeal, Don/Joan Fleming, Virginia Wallen, Barb Huffman, Lorene Sawyer, Evelyn Darr, Sue Colwell, Jim/Dorothy Jones and Fred/Diane Reddy.
The ham/bean dinner is truly a day of voluntarism—we could not do the day without our great base of volunteers—we know we can ask and always count on a yes for an answer.  Food donations of cornbread and desserts were made by:  Sandy Johnson, Dee Belton, Evelyn Darr, Heidi Newlin, Linda Berry, Trina Miller, Barb Huffman, Sue Colwell, Dorothy Jones, Sandy Scarlett, LelaMae DeNeal, Rita Monyok, Kathleen Harby, Alma Moody, Judy Walker, Diane/Fred Reddy, Darlene Meganhardt, Freda Weaver, Carolyn Brown, Sheri Hainline and Sonna Rose.  Servers for the day were:  Andy/Heidi Newlin, Dee Belton, Sandy Johnson, Cheri Welsh, Butch Schmink, Terry/Peggy Adkins, Sara Cast, Bethany Williams, Dan/Sonna Rose, Alma Moody, Sandy/Wayne Scarlett, Steve Berry and Neal/Cathy Brogan.  Thanks to everyone for another great year!
