Information in database Land in present-day Catlin Township was conveyed to original purchasers over a period of 37 years -- 1822 to 1858. The approximately 31,300 acres were sold as 387 parcels and there is a record of each of them in this database. Links to these records are provided through the "By surname," "By year" and "By section" indexes. Each land parcel sale record may have as many as four parts. The first part identifies the purchaser(s), the location of the land purchased and from whom the land was purchased. Name 1: Aaaaa, Aaaaaaa Name 2: Bbbbb, Bbbbbbb Name 3: Ccccc, Ccccccc Section: 00 Township: 00N Range: 00W Description: X2 XX Lot: 0 (XX XX) Sold by: Xxxxxx *Voided If more than one person is listed as purchasing the land, the purchasers are listed as Name 1, Name 2 and Name 3. The description within parentheses at the end of the "Description:" line only appears when surveyors differentiated land parcels by lot number. This happened mostly in irregular sections that contained more or less than 640 acres. For example, in Section 1, Township 18N, Range 12W a 42.97 acre parcel was described as Lot 2 in the west half of the northwest one quarter. Only by consulting the original survey map does it become clear that had this parcel contained only 40 acres instead of 42.97 acres it would have been described as the northwest quarter of the northwest quarter (NW NW). Since users of this database would not have access to the survey maps, the NW NW description is placed in parentheses as a guide to location. This description is used in the indexes. "Sold by" could be Federal, State or, in a few cases, Unknown. There were nine cases in which sales of land were apparently voided. Those records have "*Voided" appended to the "Sold by:" line. The reasons for these voided sales have not been discovered. The second part of the record contains information from the federal database. Patent Number: 0000 Patent Date: 00 Xxx 0000 Land Office: Xxxxxxx Acres: 00 Acres out of Township: 00 Name 1 variation: Aaaaa Aaaaaaa Residence of purchaser 1: Xxxxxxxx Xxxxxxx, Xxxxxxx Name 2 variation: Bbbbb Bbbbbbb Residence of purchaser 2: Xxxxxxxx Xxxxxxx, Xxxxxxx Name 3 variation: Ccccc Ccccccc Residence of purchaser 3: Xxxxxxxx Xxxxxxx, Xxxxxxx The "Patent Date:" was the date the formal document concerning the land sale was created in Washington. Due to the number of land sales, this date was often two years or more after the date of the sale. Federal sale of land within present-day Catlin Township was handled through the Palestine land office until 1831 when that function was transferred to the Danville land office. The number of acres is reported in the federal, state and county sections to indicate source and occasional differences. Only two of the 387 parcels straddled present-day township lines. In those two cases, the number of acres not within present-day Catlin Township are reported as "Acres out of Township:". Variations in names of purchasers are listed in the federal, state and county sections when differences occur. Every effort was made to choose the best of these variations as the primary name for the individual records and for the "By surname" index. Please notify the chs_webmaster if you see problems with the choice of primary name. It's also possible that the choice of a primary name has caused sales to two or more different people to be listed under one primary name. If you see evidence of that, please notify the chs_webmaster. Only the federal database lists the residence of the purchasers. The third part of the record contains information from the state database. Acres: 00 Acres out of Township: 00 Purchase date: 00 Xxx 0000 Price per acre: $0.00 Total paid: $00.00 Purchased with warrant: Yes Name 1 variation: Aaaaa Aaaaaaa Name 2 variation: Bbbbb Bbbbbbb Name 3 variation: Ccccc Ccccccc The purchase date is reported in the state and county sections to indicate source and occasional differences. The earliest date is used in the "By Year" index. "Purchased with warrant:" indicates whether the land was purchased using a military land grant warrant. Users should keep in mind that the use of a warrant to purchase land does not prove military service by the purchaser. Many veterans or their widows sold their military land grant warrants. In fact, warrants were bought and sold actively, usually well below the minimum $1.25 per acre price for federal land. The fourth part of the record contains information from county records.
