Catlin History Online

Sources of data

Information about the original landowners in Catlin Township was taken from three major sources:

 1. A database of federal land patents at the General Land Office (GLO) Records Automation web site (http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/) maintained by the Bureau of Land Management, Department of the Interior.

This database includes records of lands sold by the federal government through its offices in Palestine and Danville. Not included are records of lands granted by the federal government to individuals holding military land warrants.

 2. A Public Domain Land Tract Sales Database maintained by the Illinois State Archives and available through its web site (http://www.cyberdriveillinois
.com/departments/archives/databases.html
).

This database includes: (a) the federal land patents, (b) records of lands transfered to holders of military warrants and (c) sales of lands given by the federal government to the state for several purposes and sold by the state to individuals. Within the boundaries of present-day Catlin Township, there were several sections which had been given to support the development of the Vermilion Saline plus two sections given for the support of schools.

 3. A volume in the office of the Vermilion County, Illinois, Recorder listing the original land owners and the dates the lands were purchased.
