Joseph Hougendobler (Joseph Houghentobler), who resided in Lancaster, PA, joined the Revolutionary Army at Hempfield Township, Lancaster, PA on 02 Sep 1775 as a Private. This was the first company raised in the township under Captain James Barber. In 1782, Joseph was an Ensign, 4th Battalion of Lancaster County Militia under Captain James Patten. According to family stories related by word of mouth throughout the years, Joseph Hougendoubler was also a member of Washington's body guard; however, we have not as yet uncovered any documentary proof of this service.
