Elder Linos GILBERT

6th GEN.  REV.  OR ELDER LINOS GILBERT son of Noah, ordained a
missionary Bap't minister in Coshocton Ohio (recorded Coshocton Ohio
court house) was licensed to preach in 1829 by Mill Fork, Co., Bap't
church. Born 4-21-1802, New Brunswick, Conn.  He with his parents,
brothers, and sisters, migrated to western New York in 1814; later
they moved to Pultney, Belmont Co., Ohio, where he began teaching
school.  At the age of 18, 1-24-1820, Linos m. Margery Dunfee b.
9-14-1801 of Irish parents formerly of West Va.  They with their sons
and only dau.  Margery had moved to Ohio.  She d. 6-8-1874, Clark
Co., Ill., burial in Auburn Cemetery.  Her mother, Eunice Dunfee, d.
1888. in 1851 Elder Linos & family moved to Auburn Township Clark
Co., Ill.  The following was copied from "THE HISTORY OF CLARK Co.",
Marshall Ill.  Library:

Elder Linos Gilbert was a missionary Bap't minister and finding no
church of his demonination closer than 10 miles determined to
organize one in the township" In 1852 those interested in the
movement met at a school house and effected an organization with the
following mgmbers: Elder Linos and wife Margery Electa Gilbert
Norris, Sarah Gilbert Wright, Marenda Gilbert Beabout & husband Wm.
Beabout, Willis Gilbert, Eunice Gilbert, and Celia McCune. (This
Meranda Gilbert Beabout is thought to have been Elder Linos' Sister,
for although he had a dau.  Marenda she was only 14 years old at this
time and later maarried Jesse Beabout).

"Soon after this organization, Reverends Fuson, J. Riley, and H.
Humphrey met with the society and formally recognized it as a church
in regular standing.  In 1860 a new log school house was erected
about 2 miles northwest of Auburn Ill. and the little church held its
services there until 1872 when frame building 30 x 40 feet was
erected on the National Road (now U.S. 40) 2 miles west of Auburn and
three miles east of Martinsville Ill., at a cost of about $1,000. 
Said church was known as "Bethel".  Elder Linos preached there about
15 years without pay until ill health caused him to quit.  The
council of Island Grove Bap't church southeast of Martinsville Ill.,
appointed Elder Linos moderator of their church. 


Elder Linos was a militia Cap't and drilled the man ages 18 to 45
when they assembled three times yearly for practice. Elder Linos m.
Susan Collins 9-7-1879.  He d. 9-30-1888 at Andrew Johnson's
residence (his dau. Eunice's home) being 6 yrs. 5 mo. 10 days old. 
His remains were carried from the church to the grave by 6 of his
great grandsons as pall bearers.  Burial in Auburn Cemetery.  His
ch.  I REV.  NOAH, II.  ELECTA, ILL.  LINOS WM. P., IV.  SARAH, V.
JESSE, VI.  DR. SAMUEL SLAUGHTER, VII.  WILLIS WESLEY, VILL.  EUNICE,
IX.  MERANDA, AND X. JOSEPH N."


*7th GEN. VXI  WILLIS WESLEY GILBERT b. 5-11-1833 Coshocton Co.
Ohio.,d. 6-3-1900 (age, 67 yrs. & 23 days) Marshall, IIl. 
Burial Auburn Cemetary. 

He came to Clark Co. Ill., with his parents in 1851 but retuned the
next yr. to his birthplace where he was united in m. 10-17-1852 to
Ruhama Garie b. 1834 dau. of Samuel and Miriana (Houser) Garia. 
(Miriana d. 2-1-1871 age 56 yrs. 9 mo., burial Auburn Cemetary).

On their return they located near Auburn, Ill., always residing in
Clark Co.

To this union 5 sons and 4 dau. were born. ch: Geo. Wesley, Margaret
Rebecca (Mag), William Marion, John Milton, Mary Elizabeth (Molly),
Linos A., Ruhama Melissa, Rosa E., and Charles Edward. 

After Ruhama's death 2-14-1892, Willis W. m. Mrs. Lucy
McCumber-Stattler, b. 1828 Logan Co., Ohio dau. of Wm. Henry and Mary
(Van Ness) McCumber, widow of Michael Stattler and mother of 5 ch. 
Willis was age 61 and Lucy 65.  They were m. in Martinsville, Ill.,
9-25-1893 by W. B. Allen, pastor of the Church of God . (Clark Co. m.
book 1 page 298 Marshall, Ill.)

Willis was one of 9 ch., 3 of the brothers dying within a yr. 

Willis was a private in the Civil War, being a member of Co., F.,
79th, Ill. Inf.  He enlisted 8-1-1862 age 29 (altho his papers in
Springfield, Ill. archives give his age as 22) 5' 10"eyes grey, hair
black, complexion dark.  He was mustered out 6-12-1865 by Cap't
Wilson, Nashville, Tenn.  He was in Sherman's march to the sea and in
Libby prison at one time. 

His funeral was at Auburn Church.  The sermon was preached by Rev. 
Audles of Martinsville, Ill.  The body was laid to rest with the
solemnly impressive ceremonies of the G. A. R. of which he was a
member.
