WALLS

Information on the WALLS clan from Clark
County, Illinois
by:
Robert D. Walls
Burton, Michigan

I am from the John Walls of Clark County, Illinois. I believe my tree
is from that line. John Elridge Walls, I believe is Levi's son. Levi and Jane
were married in Clark County, 7 September 1849. They had two children,
John and Elizabeth. John and Elizabeth has not been accounted for by
anyone else. By elimination of the other John of about same age, and being
the son of Joshua a brother of Levi Walls. I believe that leaves Levi's son
John to be John Elridge Walls

The Senior Walls is believed to be John Walls:
His family is know as: John born in Ohio, married to Sarah in Ohio, remarried
in Clark County, Illinois, and died 23 October 1854 in Clark County. His
possible third marriage was to Jane Page in Clark County was on 3 October
1854. John can be found in the 1850 Darwin Township,Clark County,
Illinois census on page 223, line 29, household #816. It shows him being of
55 years, a farmer and being born in Ohio. With him is Sarah, age 47 born in
Ohio. Next to him in household #817, you will find Martha Walls, f., age 17
born in Ohio and Emaline Walls, age 2 born in Illinois.

Others who are considered to be sons are Nehemiah Abner Walls, born 18
November 1819, in Ohio and died 14 February 1889, Effingham Co., Illinois.
Joshua Walls, born 1822, died 1850 in Clark County. John E.L. Walls, born
1825 in Ohio, and died 1900 in Clark County. Levi Walls, born 1827, and
died 1866 in Clark County, Illinois. There has been no solid conclusive
evidence that John is the father of these men. Any amount of evidence would
be greatly appreciated.

From John Walls probate:
State of Illinois, Clark County, On this 8th day of November 1854, personally
appeared Jane Walls, a resident of said county, who being duly sworn upon
her onto says that John Walls late of said County, (her husband) is dead, that
he died interstate on or about 23rd day of October 1854. Subscribed and
...... to this 8th day of November 1854 before me. A. B. Briscoe Clk.
Signed Jane Walls, ( X her mark)

Possible early marriages for John Walls, the senior Walls
of Clark County.
John is listed in the 1850 census with a wife by the name of Sarah, so could
one of the following be the correct one? A marriage for John and Sarah
Campbell can be found in Pike County, Ohio. It is listed as John Walls to
Sarah Campbell, 5 February 1829, page 135. If this is the correct Sarah,
none of the boys would have been hers, for her wedding date is after their
birth dates. Another is listed in Jackson County, Ohio as: Walles, John and
Jane Nelson, 5 October 1820, by Vincent Southard, J.P. Jackson County is
located next to Sciota County. Some people believe Jane Nelson to be Sarah
Jane Nelson. I have found no documentation support that theory. Another
theory is that John married a Sarah Barcus, but then again no documentation.
Please help us all out.

Another possibility of children are Martha and Arcade being the daughters of
John and Sarah Walls of Clark County. I believe all the dates and marriages
and other information tend to lean that way. No one as of yet has proven
these to be the daughters of John and Sarah, that I know of.

Information on John Elridge Walls son of Levi:

From John Walls and Mary J. Low marriage:
Marriage license was granted unto John Walls and Mary J. Low, November
8th 1871, now both of this county. Allen B. Briscoe, clerk.
State of Illinois, Clark County, Sct. I hereby certify that on the 8th day of
November 1871, I joined in the state of matrimony John Walls and Mary J.
Low, according to the usual custom and laws of the State of Illinois. Given
under my hand and seal, this 8th day of November 1871. Returned,
registered and filed November 18th, 1871. Allen B. Briscoe, clerk.

John Elridge Walls married Mary Jane Low and had a daughter by the
name of Flora. There is a disagreement as to this. My fellow researchers
believe that Mary married the John Walls the son of Joshua Walls. Several
books have them married. The only information that I can see that they base
this on is a marriage license, which states John Walls to Mary Jane Low.
We know there were two John's in Clark County approximately the same
age. I will explain why I believe it was my John. Mary Jane's death is
listed in the family bible of John Elridge Walls. Also the other fact that I use
is that you will find their daughter Flora listed with John E. and Agnes
Walls in the 1880 census. Found in the 1880 Clark County census, page 13,
sup. dist. 5, en. 34, line 11. John Walls with Agnes, children as daughter
Flora age 7, dau. Sinlama age 4, son William age 1 and daughter Katy age
1.

From John E. Walls marriage to Agnes Graham:
Marriage License was Granted Unto John E. Walls age 25 and Agnes
Graham age 25, on April 17, 1875 now both of this County. Allen B.
Briscoe, Clerk.
State of Illinois, Clark County, SCT: I hereby certify that on the 18th day of
April 1875, I joined in the state of matrimony John E. Walls and Miss Agnes
Graham according to the usual custom and laws of the State of Illinois.
Given under my hand and seal, this 18th day of April 1875. William Fowles,
Justice of the Peace, Returned, registered and filed, April 19th, 1875. Allen
B. Briscoe, Clerk.

John Elridge Walls and Agnes Graham had several children, including 4
sets of twins. John had some type of disability, the kind is unknown. Family
conversation from the ancestors, stated John was not able to work his last
twenty years of his life. In the 1880 census you will find John as being listed
as disabled. It does not list what type of disability, just marked disabled.
This could prove family stories that he was disabled his last 20 years. He
died in 1899, in Dunklin County, Missouri, and is buried there with his wife
Agnes. They are buried in the Old Malden Cemetery, in the northeast corner,
near the passing road. The headstone is a double, gray in color, with the
writing on the west side of the marker. Also buried in this cemetery are three
of their children, Edward, William and Elizabeth. Edward is buried in the
Southwest corner in the Walls plot. William is also buried in this plot, but the
grave is unmarked. Elizabeth is buried in the southeast corner of the
cemetery.

1880 Clark County, Illinois census, vol. 5, E.D. 34, sheet 13, line 11.
Darwin Township
Color: White, male, age 27, birthplace Illinois, he is marked in the column for
maimed, crippled, bedridden or otherwise disabled. (does not say which)
Father's birthplace is Ohio, and his mother's birthplace is Illinois.
John is listed as a laborer, but it also shows him unemployed for nine months.
Listed with him is his wife: Agnes, white, age 32, born in Illinois, birth place
for both parents are marked as unknown, she is listed as keeping house.
Children:
Flora, daughter, white, age 7, born in Illinois, birthplace for parents, IL.
Sinlama, daughter, white, age 4, b. Illinois, birthplace for parents, IL.
William, son, white, age 1, b. Illinois, birthplace for parents, IL.
Katy, daughter, white, age 1, b. Illinois, birthplace for parents, IL.

Agnes Graham Walls is the daughter of Lewis Graham (son of Burrill
Graham and Rebecca) and Catherine Partlow (daughter of Isaac Partlow and
Rachel Seward). She was born 10 September 1850 in Clark County, and
married 18 April 1875 in Clark County, to John. She died in Malden,
Dunklin County, Missouri, on 07 September 1916. She is buried with John in
the old cemetery. They have a double headstone in the old section, very near
to the old road, in the northeast corner. She has two brothers by Lewis first
marriage; they are Alfred Graham and Albert Graham.

From John E. Walls family bible:
William Hilbert died September 1, 1876 (? Year) at about 11 o'clock at night.

Etta Walls died December 4, 1877.

Katharine Walls died Feb. 12, 1919.
Ray Chancey Walls died June 26, 1956
William Henry Walls died August 18, 1957.
Lula May Sparks died September 1958.

In Clark County birth records John and Agnes are found with a newborn son
by the name of Benjamin F. Walls, he was listed as "males", so there is a
possibility that Benjamin was a twin. Benjamin is listed as the eight child for
John and Agnes. He was born 16 September 1884, in Wabash Township,
Clark County. The record also stated the mother and father were both born in
born in Clark County. They were living in Wabash Township at the time of
the birth. It can be found in Register of Births, Clark County, Illinois as
#3189, date of return 1884, father and mother are listed as Americans, fathers
age 34 and the mothers age as 38, and John is listed as a farmer.

From an abstract of the "The Clark County Herald," of Clark County, Illinois,
dated 10 February 1885: John A. Walls started yesterday to Honey Grove,
Texas. Could this actually be John E. Walls, there has been no John A.
Walls found in any of my research of the Walls clan in Clark County, Illinois?
Family forklore has John E. & Agnes Walls traveling, when John became
very sick and could not travel any further. That would explain how they
landed and remained in Missouri.

Before leaving Illinois, John can be found in the "Delinquent Tax List," twice.
The first was for 1880, in Darwin Township, Clark County, listed as John E.
Walls. The second time was for 1881, in Darwin Township, Clark County,
listed as: J.E. Wall.

County, Missouri, buried in Malden, Dunklin County, Missouri. 1st marriage
was to Everett D. Potter, 2nd to William White and 3rd to John Grover
Downing.

John can be found in the 1860 census with Jane Walls. I base this conclusion
on the fact that listed with those two, is Elizabeth age 8, John is 10, which
would match his marriage license age. Jane was married to John's
grandfather John who died in 1854. But why wasn't their father Levi around?
Could he have been gone on the river when the census was taken? He was a
cooper (barrel maker) and was located on the river, so the barrels were
probably used for shipping by boat.

Not sure what happen to John's sister Elizabeth who was born 1852, Illinois.
There was an Elizabeth married to a William D. Clark on 10 July 1870, in
Clark County, Illinois, book E, page 173. In the 1880 Clark County, Parker
Township census, page 11, June 24th, family #85, you can find: Clark,
Elizabeth, widow, age 30, born in Illinois as both parents, and listed as
servant. With her you will find son George, age 4, born in Illinois as both
parents. Then in 1888, Marriage Book G, of Clark County, page 432, dated
29 April, Mrs. Elizabeth A. Clark to Lewis Hines or Heim, both of age,
married by Joseph Howe. J.P. Last I found her in the 1900 census, Clark
County, Casey, District 2, South, family #20 as: Himer, Louis, born
September 1858, age 41, married 12 years, born in Germany, & Lizzie born
November 1850, age 49, married 12 years, 1 child living, 1 child dead, born
in Illinois, father was born in Ohio, mother was born in Ireland.

From Levi Walls and Susan Craig marriage:
1845 August 9th, #12, Clark County, Illinois. Marriage license was granted
to Levi Walls and Susan Craig, by the consent of parents now both of this
county, Test. Davis Phillips Clerk.
State of Illinois, Clark County, I hereby certify that on the tenth day of
August A.D. 1845, I joined in the holy state of matrimony Levi Walls and
Susan Craig according to the usual customs and laws of the state of Illinois.
Given under my hand and seal this 11th day of August A.D. 1845,
_________ J.P. Returned, registered and filed October 1st, 1845, D. Phillips,
Clerk, by H. Harlin, Deputy.

Levi was divorced from his first wife of Susan Craig. The divorce filed
between them states they only lived together for one week and the papers
state they were married in 1847, not as the license states, 1845. Why do they
have a different dates, I don't know. Maybe there was a little fibbing going
on when the divorce process was going on. I don't know if Susan is the one
that married Benjamin Whitcanach or if she married Joshua Walls Jr. It
could be the one and same Susan or two different Susan's. Susan to Ben. on
23 May 1850, which if he died or was divorced from, Susan could have
remarried again to Joshua Walls. In Susan Amelia Craig obit, it states that
she was born 27 December 1858. This would have made it very tough for her
to be married the first two times. Leads me to believe there were two Susan
Craig's.

From Levi Walls and Susan Walls divorce:

From Levi Walls and Jane Page marriage:

Anderson J.P.

As for Levi's second marriage to Jane Page on 7 September 1849, we don't
know what happen to her. She may have died, ran off, or divorced. No one
knows, and probably we never will. They had two children, John and
Elizabeth. As far as any records that can be found he had no other children.

From Levi Walls and Mary Souther marriage:

Levi died on 15 January 1866 in Darwin Township, Clark County, Illinois.
He shows up in the 1850 census on page 222, line 16 as a Cooper (barrel
maker), is 23 years of age and was born in Ohio. With him in the census you
can find Jane Walls, f., age 19 born in Illinois. When he died Mary Walls
filed a petition on the behalf of Levi Walls for his probate in Clark County.
The petition states: that the said Levi Walls died, seized and possessed
personal estate, consisting chiefly of horses, cattle, sheep, hogs and farming
utensils, estimated worth about three hundred dollars. That the deceased left
surviving him Mary Walls, his widow, and John Walls (John Elridge Walls,
I believe) and Elizabeth Walls, his children and William Southard, Charles
Southard, Mannie Southard, and Julia Ann Southard the children of his
wife. This record is found in court case listed as: Term September 1864,
Record K, Pages 204 & 209.

From Mary Jane Low Walls probate:

What is amazing is that when Mary Jane died she left all of her estate to her
daughter Flora. The probate record is found in Clark County. The first
record shows Mary Jane leaving forty acres to Flora Bell and that William
Hillibert request to be the administrator. In 1890 Flora is back in court
requesting monies from where trees were cut and sold off her land.

Family stories:

Notes from Wanda Young: John E.L. went to Ladonia, Texas, with the
Stafford family 1849/50 and when Morgan Stafford was killed while trying to
dig a well, John E.L. married his daughter Sarah. In 1862 she vanished
leaving 4 children without a mother. John Wesley Walls was 9 years old at
that time. When he grew up he was back in Illinois to visit his cousin
Joshua's children and met Emily Craig, a daughter of Jesse Craig and Mary
Elizabeth Miller Walls Craig, and they married and ended up in Effingham
County, Illinois. Wanda Young's father Jesse (Jack) Walls was born in Clark
County, Illinois near Darwin in 1896. They moved to Effingham about 1898.

From Virginia Lloyd on Alonzo Walls the son of Joshua Walls and Susan
Craig: "The log cabin that was placed in a tiny park in Marshall, Illinois was
once the home of Alonzo and Minnie Walls. It is at least 150 years old. It
was originally located at a site at the northeast edge of Snyder, Illinois. The
couple purchased the cabin and twenty acres of land in 1917. Alonzo owned
and operated one of the threee stores then flourishing in the community."
