In coming up with this list, I have shortened some of the articles from the newspapers.  I did not leave out any vital information.  For example, “he was a highly respected and loved person,” is what was left out.  If you find an ancestor listed here, you can get the microfilm on interlibrary loan for follow-up.  Contact the Illinois State Historical Library, Newspaper Department, Old State Capitol, Springfield, Illinois, 62701 or your local library.

The names start in August 18, 1871 and end with the paper that was published on December 28^th, 1880.

 

 

AARON, Daniel infant son of J. W. and Nancy died on Sunday evening of lung pneumonia, he was 2 months of age.  March 4, 1874, Wednesday, page 4

 

AASHLY, infant of Nute Aashly was buried on June 14, 1876 in Marshall. June 21, 1876, Wednesday, page 5

 

ADAMS, Rebecca Ann age 53 years, wife of William T. Adams, died from Uremic Poison, Sunday evening, November 22, 1874 at her residences.  She was born near Hutsonville, Crawford County, March 2, 1821.  She moved here in 1839 with her parents.  Rebecca married William on March 21, 1849, she leaves on son Bronson, who is now a resident of Casey. M. E. Church gave the funeral services.  November 25, 1874, Wednesday, page 5

 

ADAMS, Sarah the wife of William Adams died Monday of pneumonia, she was raised in our village.  February 11, 1879, Tuesday, page 4, (Casey clipping)

 

ALEXANDER, Catherine  (Administrator Notice) March 18, 1879, Tues., p-4

 

ALLEN, Ira Dave age 19, was killed near Altamont on Thursday, he fell from a moving freight train.  His parents live near Hazel Dell, where he was returned to be interred.  February 4, 1879, Tuesday, page 4, (Casey clipping)

 

ANDREWS, Rev. Dean died suddenly with on 14^th day of September 1872, he died of apoplexy.  He was born in Lovel, Maine on February 1808, graduated from Bowdin College, came to Clark County in October 1838.  He married Louisa Shaw, who after the birth of 5 children died; he then married Doreas E. McMillen on November 3^rd, 1850 with her he had 3 children.  In the same notice is a J. K. Greennough whom they mentioned that died in 1858.  September 20, 1872, Friday, page 4

 

ANNET, Mary died in Marshall Township on February 12, at the age of 72 years.  She was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, then moved to Jefferson County, Ohio with her mother.  She married at the age of 23 years to William Annet, then moved to Clark County in 1830.  Mary was buried in Marshall Cemetery.  February 25, 1879, Tuesday, page 4.

 

ANTRIM, Clyde A. died in Casey on June 7, of dysentery at the age of 1 year.  June 15, 1880, Tuesday, page 4

 

ARCHER, James Lyman died of consumption on Monday, in the city at Frank Miller’s residence.  He was born in Marshall in January 16, 1846, on December 24, 1867 he married Eliza Whitlock the daughter of Judge William Whitlock, the funeral was today.  October 8, 1878, Tuesday, page 5

 

ARCHER, Neddie a 4 month old son of Lute and Ida Archer died Wednesday last of typhoid fever, he was buried Thursday.  December 28, 1880, Tuesday, page 5

 

ARCHER, Pearl W. infant daughter of Mr. & Mrs. George W. Archer.  She died last Tuesday at 1 o’clock of a painful death, at the age of 3 years, 4 months and 1 day.  She died in Mexia, Texas, her family is well known here.  June 10, 1874, Wed., page 5

 

ARCHER, Sallie age 10 the daughter of L. G. & Mary Archer died Monday after being kicked by a horse.  October 31, 1877, Wednesday, page 5

 

ARCHER, W. Wallace died on Thursday last of consumption at the age of 35.  March 26, Tuesday, page 4

AYERS, Mary J. died in York on August 31, of heart disease.  She was the wife of W.H. Ayers, and she leaves one child by the name of Willie at the age of 9 years, her daughter died 5 years ago.  September 16, 1879, Tuesday, page 4

BAKER, Elizabeth died in Darwin Township on July 9 of phiegmatia dalins, she was 58 years, 6 months, and 9 days of age.  July 16, 1878, Tuesday, page 4

 

BAKER, Mary Lavina died in Wabash Township on September 11, of cholera at the age of 11 months.  November 12, Tuesday, page 4

 

BAKER, William died at the age of 55 years, Saturday morning, in Wabash Township of consumption, he leaves 8 children who are now orphans, and he received a Masonic burial.  February 2, 1872, Friday, page 4

 

BALES, Wilson S. died Sunday last of consumption.  January 20, 1880, Tuesday, page 4

BARLOW, J. Milton Dr. who lived 8 miles south east of Martinsville died September 29.  He was born in Hutsonville, Illinois on March 9, 1832.  He started his practice in 1854, having gone to Rush Medical Collage.  In 1854 he married Susan Rubottom, he was buried on the 30^th.  October 12, 1880, Tuesday, page 5

BARTLETT, Francis M. died in Wabash on August 29, of congestive fever at the age of 4 years.  September 14, 1880, Tuesday, page 4

 

BARTLETT, Jane Mrs. died December 28^th, at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 23 days.  She was born in Scott County, Kentucky in 1800 and at 4 or 5 years of age moved with her parents to Warren County, Ohio till 1817, when they moved to Clark County and settled on Walnut Prairie.  She married John Bartlett her deceased husband in 1823, raised 8 children, 3 boys and 5 girls, all living but for 1.  Her brother Colonel William B. BENNETT, William Plukett who resided on the western part of the city, died of heart disease, the funeral was Sunday.  He was born in Seneca Falls, New York on June 25, 1808, came here 1815 or 1816, he was elected sheriff twice and was circuit clerk twice.  In 1837 he married Sarah Jane Botsford, he leaves his wife and 7 children.  July 20, 1880, Tuesday, page 5

BLACKBURN, Polly the widow of Julius died west of Martinsville last Saturday.  He was supposed to have been 104 years old when he died, she was between 90-100 years of age.  She was buried in Blackburn Cemetery on Sunday last.  September 17, 1878, Tuesday, page 4

 

BLANKENBAKER, Elias C. died in Orange Township on August 14, of typhoid fever at the age of 46.  October 8, 1878, Tuesday, page 4

BODINE, son of William M. Bodine was burned to death in Terre Haute, on Saturday at the age of 19 years.  He was buried in Martinsville cemetery on Monday.  August 3, 1880, Tuesday, page 5.

 

BOILS, Nancy died in Darwin on February 13, of cerebral meningitis at the age of 30.  April 9, 1878, Tuesday, page 4

 

BOOTH, Walter died in Marshall on August 5, of consumption of the bowels and liver, at the age of 4.  August 20, 1878, Tuesday, page 4

 

BORDEN, Amanda M. died in Casey Township on March 6, from meningitis at the age of 4 years and 9 months. April 22, 1879, Tuesday, page 4

 

BOWLES, William died on Monday night, 9^th day of December, he was killed by a train one mile west of Martinsville.  He was a brakeman and fell when stepping from car to car.  William was then ran over by the remaining cars.  An inquest was held on his death.  His parents live in Casey.  December 13, 1872, Friday, page 5

 

BOWLINGSON, George W. died in Martinsville Township on January 3, of typhoid fever at the age of 8.  March 19, 1878, Tuesday, page 4

BRADLEY, Lewis Morgan died last Wednesday in Marshall.  He was born in Eastern New York on August 9, 1805, was the only son of James Bradley.  On December 20, 1827 he married Nancy C. Knox.  They moved to this county June 14, 1852 and helped settled Livingston, then moved here.  He leaves his wife, 4 sons and 1 daughter.  March 30, 1880, Tuesday, page 5

 

BRADSHAW, Mrs. Mary funeral services was preached at Christian Church on Sabbath morning last by Elder J. G. Burroughs.  April 22, 1874, Wednesday, page 4

 

BRAYNARD, Joan died at his mothers residence on Monday night, age was 22 years.  February 2, 1872, Friday, page 4

 

BRAYNARD, Myra Mrs. living north of town, died of paralysis at the age of 73 years and was buried yesterday.  She has been disabled since January 1877, when she fell from a chair.  July 6, 1880, Tuesday, page 5

            BRUCE, James H. 28 years, 7 months, and 26 days of age, brother of Dr. W. W. Bruce of Casey died July 5, of fever.  James is of Indiana County, PA.  July 18, 1877, Wednesday, page 4

 

            BUCKEL, wife of Edward Buckel who lived 1½ miles east of town died last Saturday and was buried Monday at Rupp Cemetery.  She leaves her husband and grown children.  The family is native of England, having been here only 8 years.  November 18, 1879, Tuesday, page 5, (Martinsville clipping)

 

            BUCKNER, John W. died in York Township on December 27, of scariatina at the age of 8 years.  March 9, 1880, Tuesday, page 4

            BURHAM, Amanda died in York Township of inflammation of the brain at the age of 22.  March 19, 1878, Tuesday, page 4

 

            BURKETT, Lyman E. died in Auburn Township on April 15, of pneumonia at the age of 3 years. June 24, 1879, Tuesday, page 4

 

            BURNER, Abraham father of Dr. S. A. Burner died 6 miles northwest of Robinson on March 13.  He was born at Powell’s Fort, Shenandoah County, Virginia on October 8, 1799.  Abraham moved to Licking County, Ohio at the age of 18, when in 1845 he moved to Crawford County. March 19, 1878, Tuesday, page 5

 

            BURNSIDE, Charles F. was burned to death last Monday, November 18, in Dolson Township.  Charles was fastened into a child by his mother, who went outside to perform some work.  When she heard him screaming, she found in the fire pit, which he must have knocked his chair over by rocking.  The infant was burned severely and six months of age.             FINNEY, Damon, an old pioneer of Johnson Township, was found dead in his bed on Thursday, the 14^th.  Mr. Finney was living with his grandson, James Finney.  About 3 o’clock in the morning his grandson went to the bed to see if the old gentleman wanted anything; he said that he did not.  About 4 o’clock, upon getting up to build the fire, James went to the bed and found his grandfather dead.  Mr. F. was over eighty-six years of age.  He relates that he was in Cincinnati when Gen. Harrison stated from the place to attack the British and Indians in northern Ohio.             GROVES, Henry Martin, of Darwin Township, died last Friday morning at the age of 93 years and 8 days.  He was born on Jan. 1^st, 1799.  He moved to this county in a very early day and saw many thrilling adventures in his youthful days.  He was wont to tell with startling vividness, of a sight he once saw in the woods a few miles northwest of Darwin – a wolf seated on a stump in a small clearing and entirely surrounded by a ravening herd of wild hogs, who finally pulled him from his porch and devoured him.  He served through the Black Hawk War, the Mexican war and the Rebellion.  He was member of Wm. B. Archer Post, G. A. R., of this city.  At the time of his death his aged wife was lying low and was not expected to recover.  One daughter, Mrs. Daniel Davidson, Sr., lives in this county and his remaining children two boys live in Missouri.

JANES, Dr. John M.; On Saturday evening at fifteen minutes past five the report was circulated on the streets that Dr. J. M. Janes had just dropped dead at his home in this city.  It was only too true.  He was returning from up in town accompanied by Milo and as he stepped inside the door, he reeled and slowing sunk to the floor.  A doctor was summoned immediately, but he declared that death must have struck the victim just as he fell.  Heart disease was the cause.

The funeral services were held at the house yesterday afternoon, Rev. J. W. Miller and Dana Sherrill officiating.  The funeral was held under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge, of which he was a member.

            John M. Janes was born in Darke Co., Ohio, April 6^th, 1825.  He was raised on a farm and attended the common schools of the district, receiving a fair education.  He began teaching school in the winter months when 18 years of age and kept at the vocation until 22 years old, spending the summer months in adding to his own education.

            On the 27^th day of February 1847, he was united in marriage to Miss Lovica Fontz at her home near Winchester, in Prebie Co., Ohio.  He engaged in the mercantile and farming business alternately for the first six years of his marriage life.  In 1853 he entered the office of Dr. Milo Laurence in Spartonburg, Ind., as a medical student.  He became a thorough physician and very skillful surgeon and practiced with Dr. Laurence until 1857, when he started out for himself, locating in Hills Grove, Ohio.  He remained until 1876, greatly prospering in his business.  In that year he moved to Marshall, where as a surgeon, which he exercised in many most difficult cases, won him a wide reputation.  Of late years he has not pushed his practice, taking only what cases he could not refuse, as he felt that he had well earned a rest in his old age.

            Three children were born to Dr. and Mrs. Janes, of whom two – Milo and Anna (Mrs. P. H. Yant) are yet living.  Will, the youngest, died several years ago.

            Dr. Janes was a member of the Methodist Church for a number of years, and also belonged to the Masonic Lodge of this place.  He was a man of very kindly and he was a firm friend always, especially in time of need.  His sudden death was a great shock to his family and to his many friends.  February 3, 1892, Wednesday Evening, page 1

            LITTLEFIELD, Chester W., death came to him easily and painlessly.  All Sunday night he lay in a semi-conscious condition and at a few moments before six on Monday morning he quietly “fell asleep.”

            Chester W. Littlefield was born in East Enterprize, Ind., on October 8^th, 1840.  He was the son of John and Kate (Burnis) Littlefield.  In October of 1830, the family moved to Marshall, where John Littlefield soon became interested in newspaper work and he laid not down the pen of the writer until Death forever stilled his hand.  Chess was educated in the Marshall public schools.  In February 1865 he enlisted in Co. G., 132^nd Illinois Volunteers, and served seven months, being mustered out in September.

            Soon after his return home he entered the office of the Marshall Messenger, then published by his father.  He was associate editor of the Messenger for a number of years and on the death of his father, on Dec. 18, 1888, he became, though but half owner of the paper, its sole editor and director, in accordance with the wishes of his mother.

            About a year ago he began coughing considerably, but expressed so great anxiety as to the state of his health until weakness began to creep on him.  He grew more and more feeble until, six week ago; he was confined to his bed and arose from it only at rare intervals.  He bore his sufferings uncomplainingly and always had a genial word and pleasant smile for the friends who visited him.

            For some time prior to his death he had very seriously considered the subject of uniting with the Church and after due deliberation selected that of his wife and children as his choice.  By his request, Father Moroney was called Sunday and received him into the Catholic Church.

            The remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery, the funeral services being held by Father Moroney at the church, commencing at 10 o’clock this morning.

MAURER, Mrs., the wife of Ben Maurer, of Darwin Township, died last Thursday, after an illness of several days.  She had been married less than a year and bright prospects of a long and happy life were before her.  She and her husband were getting along prosperously and had their new home almost completed when the sad stroke came.  She was the daughter of Thomas Dean and wife.  She leaves a husband, father, mother and one brother to mourn her untimely taking off.  The funeral services were held Saturday under the auspices of Sugar Creek Grange, Elder D. H. Repp officiating.  There was a large attendance.  Mrs. Maurer was a consistent member of the Big Creek congregation of the Evangelical church.  January 13, 1892, Wednesday Evening, page 1

            PARK, Aaron: DEATH OF AARON PARK, from the Editor: Aaron Park, was born October 1^st, 1821 in Licking County, Ohio, where he continued to reside for thirty years.  In the year 1852, he moved to the Wabash Valley, and settled near Hart’s Grove, in Crawford County, in the State of Illinois, where he remained till 1861, when he sold his farm, and moved to Marshall, in Clark Co. and engaged in keeping boarding house, for one year, he then engaged in produce huckstering business for about four years.  In 1866; he continued to keep house with his children until May 71, when he secured a home for his two youngest children, and gave his attention wholly to the carpenter trade, about the first of August he gathered his children together and visited his relatives at Marshall, and took the children to see his oldest son, residing at Effingham, Ill.  On the 23^rd of August, the writer of this sketch, found him at the hotel in Bellair, laid up with a swelling in the throat, but he thought it was getting better.  On the 5^th of September I saw him again; his throat had got well, but he was much emaciated, and showed all the external signs of a person rapidly sinking under the infirmities of old age, and complained of no sickness or pain.  I urged him to leave the place and come to my house where he could rest and receive better care, and medical counsel.  He consented to do so after visiting the family of W. H. Joseph and some others in the vacinity of Heart’s Grove; he went to Mr. Joseph’s the same day that I saw him, but on the evening of the 6^th of Sept. expressed a desire to come to my house and assured Mr. Joseph that he was fully able to ride in a carriage.  On the morning of the 7^th he, with Mr. Joseph, started for Marshall.  He seemed cheerful and talkative, and several times on the way got out and in the carriage without assistance.  The last time he did so was within a half mile of Auburn, when he remarked, “when we get to town we will get a drink of good water,” those were his last words.  In a few moments he seemed t have a slight spasm, and sank back on a pallet prepared in the carriage for him to rest on.  Mr. Joseph drove rapidly to the hotel, where he rose on his elbow and took a drink of water, but did not speak, he was carried in and laid on a bed, a little wine was given which for a moment seemed to revive him, he soon closed his eyes and seemed to fall into a quiet slumber, but in a few moments ceased to breathe.  Thus passed away a man that had possessed a strong constitution, all his life and had scarcely known what it was to be sick, yet in a few days from performing full work as a carpenter, sank to the grave apparently worn out with age.  Aaron Park was strictly temperate in his habits all his life.  He was for many years an unassuming member of the M.             SCOTT, John, 3 miles south of town, 75 years old, died of la grippe at 5 o’clock Tuesday morning.  January 13, 1892, Wednesday Evening, page 1, Casey Clippings

 

            SCOTT, (Another Suicide) On Friday afternoon last, Robert Scott of Wabash Township, died very suddenly and under circumstances calculated to create the impression in the minds of his neighbors that he had either poison administered to him, or had taken it himself.  An investigation was started.  Drs. Jennings, Sr., McCloud and Jennings Jr., testified to finding traces of arsenic in his stomach, and that his lungs were very much congested. 

Wm. Maloney, P. VanCreasy and others testified to the fact of calling and seeing the deceased the morning of his death – of finding the empty paper and of his actions – that he had had a law suit during the week, which had been decided against him – that some of the witnesses swore they would not believe him under oath, which so wore on his mind as to cause him to be down-hearted from that time to his death – that he told some of them after the trial, that no one would ever have the chance of saying again that they would not believe him.

His wife testified that Mr. Scott arose on the morning of his death, rather earlier than usual, dressed himself, went out of doors, and then came back and laid down on the bed, a thing very unusual for him, and at breakfast all the nourishment he partook of was part of a cup of coffee, and shortly after drinking it, commenced vomiting, and went to bed, where he died about 4 o’clock, P. M.  His children testified to the same thing. One of them saying that his father told him a few days before his death, that the children must be good to their mother and to one another, for he would not be with them long.  He leaves a family consisting of a wife and five or six children, the youngest only about a year old.  He was seventy-four years of age, and is represented to have been a hard-working honest old man.  Of late difficulties we know nothing as to who was in the right or who was in the wrong, and as he has gone now to answer to a Bar of Justice where the Judge is a searcher of all hearts, it is not right for his neighbors to judge him harshly here.  They should remember his virtues.

Final verdict of a jury was that Robert Scott came to his death from the effects of poison, administered by some person or persons unknown to the jury.  September 15, 1871, Friday, page 5

            SHAW, Mrs. Albert, died last Wednesday evening at a few minutes past five, after an illness of several weeks.  The funeral services were held at the house Friday afternoon, Rev. C. F. Wilson officiating.

            Virginia DRAKE was born in Caroline Co., Va., 25 miles east of Richmond, on Sept. 18^th 1829.  In the winter of 1831 – 21, the family moved to Illinois, going by wagon to Guyandot, where they took a boat for the remainder of the journey, finally landing at Darwin.  They moved on to a farm on Walnut Prairie, where they lived until 1849, when the family broke up and Virginia went to Nashville, Tenn., to live with her brother Charles.  She was married there on Feb. 26^th, 1850, to Albert Shaw, of Clark county, Illinois.  Mr. Shaw brought his bride back to her old home and they settled on a farm on Walnut Prairie, where they lived till 1867.  While her husband was absent in the army Mrs. Shaw took charge of the farm and made a living for the four children who then looked to her for their sustenance.

            In 1867 Mr. Shaw moved his family to the old Shaw farm, on the western edge of Marshall, where they lived until October 1878, when they moved into Marshall, where they have ever since resided.

            Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Shaw and five of them are yet living.  Mary, the wife of Albert Porter, and Will and Frank live in Spokane Falls, Washington; Martha, the wife of A. P. Cole, and Eleanor, the youngest of the children, live in Marshall.

            Mrs. Shaw had been a consistent and valued member of the Presbyterian Church since 1862.  She showed her faith by her works.

            She was a kind, loving and faithful mother, and a true and tender wife and valued neighbor.  Deep is the grief of the bereaved ones, but they sorrow not as those who have no hope.

            Mrs. Shaw was conscious to the very last, bidding all a tender goodbye and sending loving messages to the absent children.  January 13, 1892, Wednesday Evening, page 1
