SURNAMES: COOK, MILLER DATE: Tuesday, May 26, 1998 ------- NAME: Benjamin Cool NOTE:Source:The Saturday Sun, Jan 4, 1896 Submitted By:gg-grandfather Joan Cool (coolfarm@sprint.ca)

On January 1st, as the new year was closing its first day, the life of one of our oldest and best known citizens was called to eternal rest, making sad and lonely the home that knew his love and care. He had lived until the following day Benjamin Cool would have reached his 76th year, during which time his life has been one full of usefulness, honor and success. He was born January 2nd, 1820 near Albany, N.Y. When quite young his father settled thirty miles from Toronto, Canada. Preferring the states however the young son returned and settled near Erie, PA, thence to Ashtabula County, Ohio, where he remained until 1844, when he moved to Illinois and engaged in farming at Batchelor's Grove. Here were born three sons, Nelson, Frank and Edward, who are residents of our village. Mrs. Fred Ferrers of Bachelors Grove and Mrs. Burville of Crete all of whom with the loving, devoted wife have lived to be a comfort and help in his declining years. Some twenty years ago he took up his residence in Blue Island, most of which time he was Justice of the Peace and familiarly known as Squire Cool. For several terms he served as a member of the Board of Supervisors and faithfully carried out every public trust given into his charge. About seven years ago he went to California in search of a milder climate as a benefit for his health and while there became so enthusiastic over the country that two years later he purchased a ranch at Santa Cruz. Here the outdoor exercise and amid the fruit and flowers he seemed to regain his strength, at least as much as could he hoped for, and so enjoyed comparative health until last winter when his advanced years brought on a severe sickness and he returned home in April to be among old friends and his family who have done all possible to make the last days of his life cheerful. His was a simple purpose, to live well and be useful in the community, and this he did. The world is better for his having lived and will miss his kind and gentle influence. As he lived, he died, like one who had run out the thread of life, quietly and peacefully passing beyond to the other shore. The funeral services were held at the home of his son, Nelson Cool, on Saturday afternoon. Rev. W.B. Burnell of the Universalist Church, of which deceased was an honored member, officiating. The internment was at Mount Greenwood where he was laid away amid its quiet beauties, the grave being covered with a mantle of flowers sent by friends who knew and esteemed his many virtues and thus wished to do the last service possible and express the deep sympathy felt for the family in their sorrow.
