LIVED ALMOST A CENTURY - March 20, 1896
James Leach Dies of Old Age Early This Morning.

James Leach aged nearly 100 years, died at the residence of his son, Edward Leach, 486 West Huron Street. Mr. Leach suffered no pain and death was caused from extreme old age. The funeral services will be held Monday at 10 o'clock from the family residence. The Rev. Isaac Linebarger will officiate and the interment will be at Forest Home Cemetery. James Leach was born near Loughfoil, Scotland June 3, 1796. When but a young man he made a tour of the British Isles and later settled in Port Hope, Canada, where he married Elizabeth Nugent Dec. 24, 1835. In 1864 he removed to Illinois and settled in Ogle County. In 1885 Mr. and Mrs. Leach celebrated their golden wedding at Creston, Ill. They came to Chicago in 1888 and Mrs. Leach died soon after their arrival here. The larger part of Mr. Leach's life was spent in farming. Mr. and Mrs. Leach had nine children, eight sons and one daughter, among whom are the Rev. William B. Leach of this city, the Rev. Charles Leach of Whittlier, Iowa, the Hon. Frank Leach of Grand Junction, Col., and Edward Leach, also of this city. It was unusual for him to be ill and he often boasted of never being bothered with a headache. A peculiar fact that Mr. Leach often mentioned was that he had a double set of teeth. He enlisted as a soldier in the Mackenzie Insurrection in 1836 and was active in Canadian politics. His first presidential vote was cast for Peter Cooper.
