"MR. NICHOLAS SHANNON We deeply regret to announce the death of our old friend, Mr. Nicholas SHANNON, of the Chicago police department, and superintendent of construction in that service. He died on July Fourth, at the age of 63 years. Mr. SHANNON was born in Ireland, and came to America at an early age, settling in this city, where he became a member of the police force, and was regarded as one of the best officers in the department. He was always an intense Irish Nationalist, belonged to the MacManus Circle and company of the Fenian Brotherhood, and went with the Fenian regiment to Canada at the time of O'Neills invasion in 1866. He was also much interested in the Parnell movement, and in all movements for the benefit of his native land. His health began to fail about a year ago, and he finally succumbed to a complication of diseases. He leaves a wife and family in good circumstances. The funeral occurred from the family residence to St. Patrick's Church, and thence by carriage to Calvary Cemetary, at 9:45 o'clock Thursday morning. High mass of requiem was offered up at the church by the Rev. T. F. Galligan, pastor, and assistant priests. The church was crowded with relatives and friends of the deceased. He was exceedingly popular with all who knew him. A better American citizen or truer Irishman never lived. May he rest in peace."
