Dr. Gilbert Belles received the NSDAR Historic Preservation Medal on June 3, 2012 from General Macomb Chapter Regent, Dr. Elizabeth Kaspar. Dr. Belles, a retired W.I.U. history professor, has been the leader in locating, marking, and restoring approximately ninety seven cemeteries in McDonough County over the past eight years. After locating the cemeteries, many in corn and soy bean fields, he enlists the aid of businesses, civic organizations, and even the Boy Scouts, to provide both the physical labor and the funds for the restoration.
General Macomb Chapter regent and vice regent participated in the Heritage Days Parade, the theme for which was
'Honoring Women Community Activists."
