Lombard, Illinois
Lombard, a village in northeastern Illinois, in
DuPage county, about 20 miles west of the center of Chicago. Lilacia
Park (10 acres), the former estate of Col. William Plum, who bequeathed
it to the village, contains more than 300 varieties of lilacs,
which he collected around the world. There are numerous events
in the spring celebrating "the Lilac Village," as it
is known, including the Lilac Parade which I have enjoyed year
after year. The Dr. William LeRoy House, a historical Victorian
house that eventually became the home and studio of Harold Gray,
the originator of the Little Orphan Annie cartoon strip; Sheldon
Peck Homestead, the oldest house in Lombard; and the Lombard Historical
Museum are places of interest. Lombard was settled in 1834 and
was named for Chicago banker and real estate developer Josiah
Lombard. Government is by council and manager. Population: 42,322.
