Introduction
The Elgin Genealogical Society and its website committee wish to thank the American Legion Post 57 of Elgin, Illinois for allowing us access to their Deceased/Transferred File for the purpose of indexing the file. Particular thanks goes to Adjutant Wilfrid McWilliams whose suppport was greatly appreciated.
We, also want to thank all the volunteers without whom this project couldn't have been completed. Thanks to Homer Moore, project coordinator, who kept us working and gave more hours to transcribing than anyone else; thanks to all the transcribers, proof-readers and computer workers - Les Barnes, Virginia Blietz, David Gunn, Becky Higgins, Dana Olson, Carol Tuttle, Suzanne Kovac, Lonnie Richardson, Judy Van Dusen, Rhonda Weisschnur, Viola Willig and Emily Zierk.
About the file:
The Deceased/Transferred file contains information regarding former members of Post 57. Some of the records contain more information than others and it was difficult to decide which fields to use for the index. In an effort to provide some genealogical information and have some entry for each name, we used the following:
There is often much more information useful to the genealogist contained in these records. For a complete accounting of a particular record, contact the American Legion Elgin Post 57 at 1- 847-741-2358.
Because there were several "card files" included in the completion of this project, the index is not in absolute alphabetical order. Be sure to look through all records for a given letter. We made every effort to create an accurate transcription of these records and hope that this index proves advantageous to the genealogical community.
