BERRY / EWING / GALLOWAY
I am interested in information about the following individuals: Elijah
Conway BERRY (signs his name "Col. E. C. Berry"), William Lee Davidson
EWING ("W. L. D. Ewing," or sometimes "General Ewing"), and James GALLOWAY.
I am working on my Master’s thesis, which has to do with people who worked
as surveyors for the General Land Office during the years 1837-1841. These
three were residents of Fayette County (presumably Vandalia) at the time
that they worked as surveyors.
I am hoping to find the following information: year and place of birth;
year of arrival in Illinois; what other work they did (Ewing, for example,
was a politician, and was even governor of Illinois for two weeks. Berry,
Ewing’s father-in-law, was the state’s first auditor of public accounts);
year and place of death; and where buried.
What I would consider a goldmine is if I locate a descendent who may
be in possession of letters by any of these men, where they describe the
work they did as surveyors.
In return, I would be happy to share any information I have gathered
so far on these individuals, and can send along photocopies from the field
notes they kept as surveyors (available on microfilm at the Illinois State
Archives).
