John Meriday Mahon (John Meriday Americus Demerit
Mahon), 82, a resident of Greenville for more than 30 years, died suddenly
at his home, 425 East Vine Avenue at 10:15 p.m. (D.S.T.) Sunday.
Mr. Mahon had been in failing health for the past year and had been hospitalized

times during that period. For the past 5 days he had not been
feeling as well as usual. Sunday night he went into the bedroom and
lay down on the bed to rest. A short time later his wife went into
the room and found him. A physician was summoned but he was past
human aid.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Donnell Funeral Home at 2:30 p.m., Tues., the Rev. Carl H. Mitchell, pastor of the Methodist Church officiating. Intermint will be at Mt. Auburn Memorial Park.
John Merida Mahon, son of Henry Dennis and
Elvira (Pryor) Mahon, was born March 31, 1874 in Lone Grove Township, Fayette
County and was aged 82 years, 4 months, and 12 days. He followed
the occupation of farming in his early life and on August 29, 1899 he was
married to Miss
Nellie Stephens, at the home of her parents, near Loogootee.
They lived on the farm until 1904 when they moved to Loogootee where he
operated a furniture store and was a funeral director. Later he was
interested in a general store with his brother-in-law, in Loogootee under
the firm
name of Mahon & Hamilton. Still later he was in business
in St. James with his brother. They moved to Meridian, Cal. in 1917
where they lived 2 years and then moved back to Fayette County. In
1923 the family moved to Greenville where Mr. Mahon was employed at the
Greider Bakery and its
successors for 17 years. He later worked at the Eakin Locker
plant until he retired in 1954.
Surviving are his wife, 1 son, Gerald L., of
East St. Louis, 3 daughters, Emogene, wife of Fred Baker of Beckemeyer;
Lucille, wife of Verne E. Spratt of this city, and Lorraine, wife of Edward
H. Loyd of Vandalia; seven grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and a
sister, Mrs. Asceola (Osceola) Hamilton of Vandalia. A son Glen Everett
died in infancy as did a sister, Prudence. 5 brothers "K", "B", Thomas,
Rollin, and Jackson have preceeded him in death.
