he following information has been excerpted and transcribed by Jane Bennett, the granddaughter of Loren Bruce Bennett in July 2000.
Biographical Note: Bruce was the son of James Alexander Bennett who married Matilda Purvis, daughter of Joseph L. Purvis.
The information presented is taken from notes made by Bruce Bennett in a 358-page book, Instructions for using The Farmer's Manual. Bruce's granddaughter Jane first transcribed the information in July 2000 and sent it in a series to the ILGALLAT-L mail list for Gallatin County Genealogy. With her permission it is published on the Gallatin County ILGenWeb site.
Most of the people involved lived in northeastern Gallatin County in the New Haven area. The information starts in 1903 and runs through 1949. From that point, Jane's aunt, then her father, kept alive the tradition for another ten years. Not every item in the journal has been transcribed since many of the entries also include comments on the weather, prices of groceries, personal Bennett family information, farm planting, harvesting, moving from house to house, a lot of information on floods, and other tidbits.
